Hustle
That's the most improtant one of all. Work on quickness by doing jump rope or something. If you don't want to be seen jump roping (like me,) do it inside. Don't pull yourself with the lead foot when shuffling sideways, push with the trail foot. And hustle. Make sure you hustle.

hustle definately. . .
i think it's kobe bryant who said it best when he told the media - "i try to conserve my energy on the offensive end. i never rest on the defensive end"
what works for me is staying infront of my man and putting a body on him.. say he likes going right, force him left -- and if he likes going left force him right.. trying to poke the ball away helps too because it makes them panic, etc. i don't really like to block shots unless i'm sure they're going for one because most of the time they like to pump fake and stuff like that.. so keep your feet on the ground at all times.. when your man tries to drive, stick with him stride by stride and keep one hand a little bit below waist level and one hand up high to deny the layup or the jumpshot..
oh yea bending your knees is important as far as defensive stance goes.. always focus on their waist so you know where they're headed for

Watch the Waist not the Ball

LOL @Kobe... right.
I agree with ThisIsAJackMove, only I was gonna say watch the chest. That's basically it, watch the body, cut it off.
Depends on your position too....

dont use your hands....maybe its good for a steal, but how many times do you get fouled with that? My advice will be, use your chest to stop the man with the ball....if he wants to drive past you...catch him with your chest..works always...and ofcourse force players on their weak hand/sideline, and if hes driving trough the baseline...cut the line of by stepping over it

alot has been said, but also
stay low, because you not gonna be able to defend any one if you just standing straight up, but not 2 low or else you won't be as fast
another thing, is you have to know your opponent, if you know he is a shooter, when there is screens fight through them so he can't shoot, but if you know he is a driver, than jump around the screen and get back to defencive stance.

LOL @Kobe... right.
"It was a bad decision," Parker said of his pass, which came just before the Spurs were to be whistled for a five-second violation. "Maybe I was in too great of a hurry."
"I try to conserve myself at the offensive end," Bryant said. "I never rest on the defensive end."

Here are my advices:
- work hard
- pay attention
- move your feet

When you go to block a shot, don't just swat blindly - you'll likely end up fouling the shooter. Also, try to block the ball so that you either have a path to grab it or try to tap it to a teammate. It's a great way to start a fast break.

I got to thinking, any post defense tips(I plan on being on the block)
Wed Sep 17, 2003 2:34 pm
as I am one of the smaller players on our team I don't guard the post but when it is pick-up I would wit my friends but here are some 4 post defence
don't try to block a hook-shot, your end up fouling them, just try to contest it
try not to go for all those shakes and pump fakes as leaving your feet 4 half a second is enough time for the player to get around you and lay it in.
and don't let them get to far in the paint, push them(not literaly) out of the key even if they don't got the ball.

i advise to have the right attitude. take pride in playing good defense. anyone can put the ball in the hole. takes more effort to be a good defender then a good player on offense
