He was admittedly tough but at least he didn't change his score simply to force a tiebreaker round like another former Tar Heel we could mention.
Anyway, a few thoughts on All-Star Saturday...
Shooting Stars: Easily the sloppiest Shooting Stars contest in its brief history at the All-Star Weekend. From the clock stopping on one minute to Michael Cooper and George Gervin's threes to the atrocious times and Detroit winning on a technicality, an event that doesn't have much flare but it usually fun became a bit of a farce.
Skills Challenge: I was surprised to see Chris Paul finish last. Perhaps I put too much stock in him being the only point guard in the contest but I had picked him to win and figured he'd at least make the NBA Finals. I can't wait for the theories of how the NBA helped Wade win back to back to start coming out.
Barkley vs Bavetta: I was hoping Dick Bavetta would win. We won't hear the end of this for some time. Anyway, it was a bit of fun for a good cause and Bavetta was a good sport for doing it in the first place. Congrats to Sir Charles for making good on his promise.
Three Point Shootout: I was hoping we'd see the all-time record broken in the final round but tieing the final round record was impressive enough. I was a bit surprised by the shooting this year, on average the scores were good but there were quite a few ugly misses, more than you usually see in the contest. Usually there's one or two shots that elicit a cry of "Someone close the door/Someone left the door open" but I surprised by the amount of shots that missed badly. Still a very impressive shooting display as always.
Dunk Contest: Judging was pretty tough all around this year but this year's panel have certainly earned the right to be harsh critics. It was definitely a well-earned victory for Gerald Green as he really put on a show. The whole Nate Robinson cut-out being replaced by the real Nate Robinson business was great, a nice display of sportsmanship and an incredible dunk that admittedly should have been a 50. Nate had a couple of nice dunks as well though the plethora of attempts in the final round once again killed the suspense and the attempt that did go down was very anti-climactic. The contest could still be going if the time limit hadn't been put in place.
I guess I'm not as impressed with Dwight Howard's sticker dunk as other folks are. Sure, it was original and creative and showed great leaping ability but he is almost seven feet with an impressive wingspan. The dunk itself was fairly average which at the end of the day was what mattered most. The sticker was something different but the way he threw down the dunk wasn't anything that hasn't been done before. 45 probably would have been a fairer score but the action with the ball just wasn't creative enough in my opinion to warrant anything higher. Entertaining all the same.
All in all, for my money it was another enjoyable All-Star Saturday.
