IE 7

Postby Cable on Wed Jan 24, 2007 1:36 pm

I know most of you guys use Firefox or something else, but for those who still have the ol' Internet Explorer, anyone got IE 7 yet? I downloaded it without thinking (it just popped up and said 'updates available for Windows') and I haven't decided whether I like it or not. The menus are pretty different and this tab thing is cool (having multiple web page tabs in one Explorer window), but the thing I hate the most is this ClearType font crap. It supposedly makes the text better for LCD monitors (I guess clearer and sharper), but on my LCD monitor it looks like shit, it's all blurry. I haven't even figured out how to get rid of it yet. So, what say you guys? I give it a (N) , at least until I sort out this font crap.

I have IE7. I'm not sure what the ClearType stuff you're referring to is?

ill stick to firefox. It basically copied firefox. IE still comes with its issues and not as easy to clean and remove as firefox(well cant be at all), or as customizable.

Cleartype is not exclusive to IE7.

http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cle ... Step1.aspx

You can mess around with it at that site. I don't care for IE7, as I find that default user interface isn't very intuitive. I'll take Opera anyday, and I'll enthusiastically endorse Firefox when they stop it from ballooning to over 100 MB of memory usage when I open three tabs.

i just updated it and im not to sure if really like it or not. i prefered having all the options up the top (file, edit, etc.) But things like not having the history button accessable is also very annoying. The only things i like are the tabs up the top and that you dont need to download a google pop up blocker cause it comes with one...
I give it a 5 out of 10. Not bad, but not good.

We've got it at work, I'm still considering whether to upgrade my home PC though. I find tabbed browsing handy at times though I don't like the idea of getting rid of the traditional windows menus (File, Edit, View and so on). Apparently there's a way to change the layout so it's similar to IE6 though I haven't messed around with that yet. Apart from that, it's no better or worse than IE6 in my experience.

I love ClearType except Cable's right, on PC's (depending on the monitor), it's not well rendered as Apple's built in anti-aliasing system for its OS X. Anyway, Firefox and Opera > IE7.

I'd choose Opera for its speed and easy interface navigation, but because of some of its inconsistencies on web pages, I'd have to go with Firefox. IE 6 just blows so bad considering how far behind it is on the international web standards consortium.

Likewise, I don't get popups on IE6 (no external pop up blocker), it's fast, doesn't eat a lot of my memory and it's not tabbed. I dislike the tab thingie. Even my windows XP isn't allowed to group similiar things, I dislike that. So yeah, I'm sticking for the time being.

Easy fix - if you want the File/Edit/etc. menus back just right click on the blank space to the right of the tabs and click Menu Bar. (Y)

yeah my roommate jocks apple & firefox so he's always giving me shit like "oh you don't have tabs" and whatever, but I like my "tabs" at the bottom of the screen... leaves more screen space for the pages. i also turned off the feature to group similar tasks because i want to look at the titles of the pages i have open.

You said it bro, I refuse to work on people's PC that has that group similiar windows feature enabled. Either you disable it and let me fix your stoopid computer or you go pay for it.

Yeah you can bring back the old menus pretty easily.

I'm thinking it's my monitor that's the problem cause nothing out there seems to be able to fix this ClearType stuff. That really pisses me off cause it's a good quality monitor. Anyone know if I can revert back to IE 6 somehow? I couldn't find it on the IE website.

You can just hit alt and those traditional menus come up. Don't know if you already knew this, but yeah....lol

Yeah, I've done it twice and messed around with my monitor properties. No luck. :(

Yeah we weren't saying that IE6 didn't have it. Andrew just didn't think they had these menus. We were just explaining how to show them.
