Celtics' rookies
by nbadraft.net

9 - Rajon Rondo

Image

Birthday: 2/22/1986
NBA Postion: Point Guard
College: Kentucky
Class: Sophomore
Ht: 6-2
Wt: 171
Int Team: N/A
Hometown: Louisville, KY
High School: Oak Hill Academy

NBA Comparison: Mookie Blalock

Strengths: A lightning quick point guard with the ability to penetrate seemingliy at will. Has incredible body control and takes the ball to the basket and finishes exceptionally well for a PG. He has a scorers mentality, but also passes the ball well especially on the dribble drive. Owns great ball handling skills which become lethal combined with his quickness. Many people thought he was the best player on his high school team that included Josh Smith (drafted 17th by Atlanta Hawks in 2004). He has progressed into a solid shooter, that combined with his quickness has made him a very difficult player to defend.

Weaknesses: Still must develop a better basketball understanding. Could stand to put on some weight and add some muscle mass. His outside shot has become better but with improvement in this area, defenders will have to respect that facet of his game which will make it impossible to keep him from getting into the lane. Still must become more under control as he can become erratic at times. His defense still must improve. Must learn to be a complete point guard with the ability to dictate the tempo and get everyone involved.

Notes: Had 55 points and 7 assists in a game in a tournament in Europe for Oak Hill Academy. He also set the school record at Oak hill with 27 assist then followed that performance up by breaking his own record with 31 assists...

12 - Allan Ray

Image

Birthday: 6/17/1984
NBA Postion: Shooting Guard
College: Villanova
Class: Senior
Ht: 6-2
Wt: 204
Int Team: N/A
Hometown: Bronx, NY
High School: St. Raymond's

NBA Comparison: Luther Head

Strengths: Very long, has a 6'8" wingspan ... A pure shooter with range out to NBA 3 point ... Good first step, strong one on one skills ... Adept at creating shots for himself and also strong at catch and shoot ... Has excellent ball handling ability ... Has a knack for creating contact and drawing fouls where he capitalizes on his superb free throw shooting ... Good athlete with nice leaping ability ... Uses screens well ... Good on ball defender due to his quick feet ... His great ability to shoot should allow him to be a scoring role player in the NBA ...

Weaknesses: An undersized 2 guard ... His ability to fill in as a point is limited due to his poor vision and passing ... Negative assist to turnover ratio, his point guard skills are below average ... Solid defender but not outstanding ... Not a physical player, lacks the strength to overpower defenders that his teammates possess ... His lack of size and strength makes him a defensive liability on the next level ... Off the ball defense is just average, not good at anticipating passes for steals ...

Notes: Came into Villanova a top 50 recruit and has had a tremendous career on his way to scoring over 2000 points

0 - Leon Powe

Image

Birthday: 1/22/1984
NBA Postion: Power Forward
College: California
Class: Sophomore
Ht: 6-8
Wt: 240
Int Team: N/A
Hometown: Oakland, CA
High School: Oakland Tech

NBA Comparison: Malik Rose

Strengths: Very talented offensive player with the ability to play back to the basket or face up ... Explosive leaping ability despite the knee injuries ... Has great quickness, and crafty at getting around defenders to the basket ... Has a nose for the basket ... Very competitive and talented player, a real difference maker on the college level ... Ball handling is very good for a big forward ... Shooting ability out to 18 feet is good ... Has great upper body strength ... Super long arms and big hands make him like a magnet grabbing loose balls ... Great motor, competes hard ...

Weaknesses: Injuries to his knees have required two major reconstructive surgeries. The fear of another knee injury is there, so proving he can remain healthy through his Junior year would help his chances of getting drafted in the first round ... He's undersized to play power forward in the NBA, but has good athleticism and long arms ... Has good speed, but looks very awkward running the court, his back is always upright, he never leans forward, and his legs don't extend fully ... Lacks the passing ability and perimeter skills to play small forward ...

Notes: Led the Pac-Ten in rebounding as a freshman, two years ago. Came into Cal rated as one of the top 5 prospects in the country.

Green shines off the bench for first victory

ImageImage

BOSTON - The Boston Celtics achieved a victory in their 2006-2007 NBA Season opener, after defeating the Western Conference winners Dallas Mavericks 89:94. The Celtics' first game this year started with a minute of silence, in honour of the greatest Boston coach Arnold "Red" Auerbach, who passed away on Octomber 28th, at the age of 89. The Celtics led the score after the first quarter, but in the second and the third, the MAvs showed why they played at the finals last season. Anyway, after a fantastic fourth quarter, won 33:22, the players of Doc Rivers took it 94:89.
Paul Pierce scored a team-high 28 points. Gerald Green added another 20 going off the bench. Wally World finished with 15, and Sebastian Telfair scored only 2 and dished 6 assists. Michael Olowokandi finished with 10 points, 7 boards and 4 rejected shots. Leon Powe and Rajon Rondo made their NBA debutes.
For Dallas, Jason Terry scored 34 points, but that wasn't enough. Nowitzki added 20, and Dampier finished with 18 and 14 boards.
After the game, Celtics' leader Paul Pierce was extremely happy with his team's performance tonight.
"We dedicate this victory to Red. I'm sure his up there now, and without any doubt his the head-coach of the Angels' team" The Truth said.

In their next game, the Celtics are playing the Grizzlies at home.

Good signing, Scalabrine was a finesse player no one needed, while Kasun can grab boards and power his way through. You like him since he is from Croatia ? ;) Dunno if there is a relation between Croatia and Bulgaria though.

About the first recap, are there any boxscores and I just cant find them, or arent there any. Would be cool to see them next time then.

Keep it up !

Something like that... he's one of my fav european players, and I think Orlando didn't give him enough time so he could reveal his talent. There weren'te any boxscores in the first game, but I'll make it better in the second :)

Celtics fell short to Grizzlies for the first season loss

BOSTON - The Boston Celtics suffered their first loss this season. Doc Rivers' team lost to Memphis Grizzlies 97:100, as Paul Pierce missed a jump-shot 1.4 seconds before the buzzer, which would've sent the game into overtime.
In the opening quarter, Memphis clearly had an advantage and took it 23:31. The Celtics bounced back in the second, reducing the difference to 4 points at the half. In the third, and nearly all of the fourth quarter, Boston led the score, as they even had a 8-0 run, that gave them a 94:89 lead, 1:27 before the end of the game.
For the winners from Memphis, Mike Miller scored the most points - 26. The rookie from Connecticut U - Rudy Gay added 15 and 8 rebs. Hakim Warrick scored 10 and grabbed 11 boards. The difference between the two teams tonight was called Chucky Atkins. Former LA Lakers point guard came off the bench to score 21 points and lead the Grizzlies to the victory. He shot 8-14 from the field, and was deadly from beyond the arc - 5 out of 5.
The best performer for the Celtics once again was Paul Pierce. The Truth scored 22 points, with 12 rebounds and 3 assists. Al Jefferson performed well too, as he scored 20 points. Big Al also grabbed 11 boards (5 on the offensive end). Wally Szczerbiak scored 13 points, but left the game due to an injury. Delonte West, who started at the point guard spot ended the game with 8 points, 4 assists and 3 offensive boards. Tony Allen was a good inclusion off the bench - 9 pts, 3 rebs, 4 ast and 2 stl along with Gerald Green who scored 7 points in 7 minutes. Mario Kasun scored 2 points in his debut as a Celtic.
It's expected, that the NBA will impose a solid fine on Doc Rivers, because he did not show up for the press conference after his team's loss.

Celtics beat Spurs for second season win

BOSTON - The Boston Celtics achieved their second win this season, after winning 105:100 against the San Antonio Spurs. The home team took control of the game since the begining - a 26:13 first quarter was promising a blow out win, but 22:35 in the second and Michael Finley slowed down Boston. The 34-years old veteran scored 15 of his 35 points in the second period. The third 12 minutes were equal, as the Celtics took the win in the closing quarter, taking ig 25:20.
The best player for the Celtics...Paul Pierce again. The former Kansas Jayhawk scored 24 points, grabbed 10 boards and dished out 6 assists. Wally Szczerbiak's performance is disappointing and there is a rumour about him and Sebastian Telfair being traded, because Marbury's cousin is having problems with the discipline, and despite his good performance tonight (16 points and 5 assists off the bench) he's not having the proper attitude in his connection with Doc Rivers. Delonte West and Gerald Green were two of 6 Celtics to finish in double digits.
For the Spurs Michael Finley, along with Tim Duncan were the only players who impressed tonight. Duncan scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebs, and Finley finished with 35, 5 assists and 4 boards. The veteran guard showed that age is not a measure in basketball. He exploded for a terrific 360 dunk, and after that posterized Michael Olowokandi.
The press continues to provoke Celtcs head coach Doc Rivers. He was asked a few times why Sebastian Telfair isn't listening to what he is saying during timeouts, but Rivers remained calm, after he was fined 30.000$ for not showing at the press conference after his team's loss against Memphis

BOSTON - Gerald Green scored 22 off the bench, and Paul Pierce added another 23 as the Celtics went past Atlanta for their second consecutive win - 94:91. Everything on the floor was equal, as the game was decided in the last minutes. Paul Pierce hit a fantastic three-pointer over Marvin Williams, to give the Celtics a 87:85 win 1:26 before the end. Atlanta answered with a mid-range bucket by Donta Smith, to tie it, but The Truth with his third three of the game gave the 90:87 lead to his team. In the last 40 seconds, Gerald Green scored 4 free-throws to seal the win - 94:91.
Wally Szczerbiak scored 14 points and made 4 assists. Al Jefferson added 12 and 9 rebounds, as he started off the bench tonight, due to a light wrist injury. Sebastian Telfair once again performed poor, and from the last information from one of the players, he's just days away from being traded.
The Hawks' best performing player was Joe Johnson. JJ scored 29 points and dished 6 assists, but he couldn't go home with the victory. Marv Williams scored 11 points, and Royal Ivey added 17.
"I'm happy with tonight's win, but we have some aspects to practice on. I think we should put more effort back on D" Gerald Green said.
