Can Spree return to being an all star?

Postby Matthew on Fri Aug 15, 2003 8:32 pm

The thought just crossed my mind, and given that spree will now be back to being a shooting guard and back in the west, can he return to being an all star? Or will KG, Wally and sam cassell take too big of a chunk out of his scoring?

It's difficult to say, cause West has other good SG besides him and they could be better than him (Kobe, Finley, Ray Allen?!?) When he is playing SF then West also has KG, Dirk, Marion.. so I'd say that it's very douptfull that he would be an allstar again....

I doubt he could be an all-star again but I guess anything is possible. Look at Vlade Divac, he got to be an all-star just for outlasting so many centres in the league, waiting for them to retire and then having a half descent season in which he got to be an all-star. Kobe might be busy this season, and you never know what'll happen to the other SG's out there...

The Wolves might be a descent defensive rebounding team this season so you never know, Spree might put up some numbers if he can still run like he used to before being traded to midgetville (ny) :)

How could someone know so little?

1) Sprewell was first-team All-League his second season. All-LEAGUE.

2) Sprewell has been an All-Star at least four times in his career.

Do you know anything about basketball?? Get your facts straight before posting.

Read his career highlights.
anywayz..
It is possible for him to be a All-star again, although doubtful. If a couple of those major stars get injuried (Kobe, Finley, Ray Allen) he could be a replacement.

I believe it is referred to as All-NBA team, not All-League.

I knew he was an all-star, but I forgot how he was All-Nba before... he avereaged 21, 5, 5 and 2 and got all-nba? dam... people wit stats like that are getting all-nba third team and some second team now....

But remember back then, reggie miller was a starter for the east at shooting guard. I think that shows how weak the league was at the 2 guard spot.

By the way, Sprees best season(96/97):
24.2 ppg, 6.3 apg, 4.6 rebounds and 1.65 steals per game. Not bad stats hey?

i think he has a chance to become a all-star...although the chance isn't high..he still could be one...but now he's a very solid player with very solid numbers...but as he goes to the T-Wolves the numbers are gonna drop for Spree...mainly cuz of KG....he has a chance of making the all-star team but not alot....

But KG isnt a shoot first guy. He makes his teamates better. But we'll have to wait and see. I hope he makes it.

Well, let's forget now Reggie is one of the best SG in the whole history. That shows how weak were the historic SGs.

he avereaged 21, 5, 5 and 2 and got all-nba? dam... people wit stats like that are getting all-nba third team and some second team now...

hmmm, ALL-nba, I agree you see now more than one putting numbers like those, but that doesn't mean he didn't do as good as those. Grant Hill, made the first team in the year he just scored 21 but (9 rebs, 7.3 assts, 1.8 stls gave him the spot). Now, if you want to compare with today's players, then you would say someone with his numbers would hardly make the 2nd team knowing you have Tim Duncan, KG, Dirk, Rasheed or Webber. Even Paul Pierce who scored 26 the whole season went to the 3rd team :? .

Back with the subject, we all have to remember all-star game is related with being popular, so it is up to you if you want him to start or what, after the starters are chosen, then we might have to check numbers. I don't affirm Spree will be an all-star but for sure if he has a solid season, he will be one of the top guys there.

Reggie was consistant. But one of the best shooting guards in the history of the game? lol Id rate alot 2 guards better than reggie. He was one of the best in the 90's, but no way is he in the same class as Jordan, Jerry West or Dr J. Reggie is somewhat one dimensional, although he is an ok on the ball defender. His "steller" stats from the 94/95 season (where he was the all star game starter) of 19.6 ppg, 3 apg and 2.6 rpg are nothing compared to what guys are putting up now, and yet he was the all star game starter for the east. That to me shows how weak the league was at that position.

You got miller all wrong... he was the best clutch player ever(IMO). lets not forgot that time in 95', at msg, game 1, 8 points in 8.9 seconds, pacers win. That is clutch. and he was one of the best 3-point shooters in history and one of the best free throw shooters in history too. and if he is all those things, I think he deserves to be called one of the best shooting guards of all time, by far not the best, but he is up there.

You could make an arguement for him being "the best clutch player of all time" but i think mj, larry bird, magic etc are more clucth. But he is one of the best, no question.
However, so is robert Horry. Does that make him one of the best power forwards or small forwards? Mark Price was an allstar, and also one of the better 3 point shooters and the best free throw shooter in the leagues history, does that mean he is one of the best pg's?
Reggies game lack completeness. He has never been a decent rebounder for his position, he has never really been able to make his teamates better, he has never really been able to shut a guy down defensively.
I know you cant take away his confidence, but you cant overlook his flaws either..

Even if he posts better than his career numbers (which have been good enough to earn him four All-Star appearances, including a start in 1995), I doubt he'll make the team given the amount of talent in the Western Conference. It's still a possibility, but I don't think his chances are as good as they would be if he was still a Knick.

The west doesnt have as many taelnted 2 guards as the east.
The east has:
Iverson
Tmac
Vince
Paul Pierce
Plus guys like Stackhouse, Rose and Eddie Jones.
The West has Kobe (who may not be around for the asg...) Ray Allen and michael Finely. But i think spree would outvote those last two... which means if kobe's trial is before then Spree might be an all star? Its possible... lol remember Yao started over shaq last season.

bak to spree... he ws never a all-star caliber player!! He was a very very good player but one of those who are good coz they are the only on their team, where he was selected it was only coz his name did not apear on any ballot!!

True. But Iverson and T-Mac are likely starters thanks to fan voting. Vince is usually listed as a forward on the ballot, so he'll make the team as the starting small forward. Paul Pierce will most likely make the team as a reserve, so that would leave Spree battling with Stack, Jones and Rose for a spot on the team.

Paul Pierce would be the backup shooting guard, and with Kidd at the point guard Spree would be battling peirce, and also Baron Davis, who although isnt a two guard, is an all star and the coaches would probably opt for him instead of spree. I think latrell would have a better chance getting in the west, especially if kobe isnt around. But if he is, I still think his chances are better out west.

Even with Pierce making the team as the backup shooting guard with Kidd making the team as the backup point guard, there would be room for Spree on the East squad.
