New York Knights - Looking for players

The Beginning

I had been a friend of David Stern for some time. He was a very prominent person in the National Basketball Association. He was the NBA commissioner. It was hard to schedule a meeting or conference with this man because of him being so elite and popular. He has been the NBA commissioner since 1984.

I was Floyd Turbo, most commonly known as the Assistant Head Coach of the New York Knicks basketball team. It was one of the worst jobs that I could’ve ever wanted. I love working with the players, helping out the rookies, and developing all the guys, but what the francise was doing was ruining the team.

I was out at dinner with David Stern at a New York restaurant when I decided to tell him an idea that I had that could possibly change the entire NBA forever.

I was going to get rid of the New York Knicks and create a new team called the New York Knights. I will hire new owners, general managers, get players from scratch, and work my way up to the championship.
I decided to tell him about it.

“So, how have things been lately, Stern?”
“Oh, you know, the usual. It’s been very stressful lately. I’m having to deal with so many things now, you have no idea what I have been going through in the last couple of days. It has just been torture!”
“Yeah, I know what you mean.”
“No you don’t.”
“That is true.”

David Stern was also a pretty comical man. He usually cracked a few jokes every now and then. He always kept everyone in a good mood. I was desperately hoping that his mood would stay the same.

“David, well, I have been thinking, and you have to promise me before I say this that you will at least consider my idea.”
“Oh boy.” Stern quickly commented before I started conversing again.
“Well, I want to make a new franchise.”
“You’ve got to be kidding, right?” Stern said. He was looking serious.
“No, but I was thinking of replacing the Boston Celtics because they have had know publicity with the media, the organization is losing money and nobody is coming to the games.”
“Yes, I know what you are saying, but I’m not sure if you know what you’re saying. Floyd, this could spread so much news around the league. People are going to doubt the NBA. We just created a new franchise two years ago; the Charlotte Bobcats.”
“Yeah, and they were a huge hit! Dave, you have to at least consider what I am saying here!”
“Floyd, you know that I have supported you all throughout your entire career, but when you bring up something like this, then it is just crazy! Besides, even if this did happen, where would you get all of your players?”
“Off the streets. I guarantee that there is some top class talent out there that has just been undiscovered. Stern, its only August and we have plenty of time to get this organized. All you have to do is give me some time to let this progress.”
“And what about your staff?”
“Well, how did all the other teams acquire their personnel? I’ll just host a wide range of occupations and then the people start applying.”
“You actually think that you can create a new franchise, get new staff, and new players in less than two months?”
“Just watch me.”
“Well, where are you going to get all of the money?”
“Stern, trust me. I am a pretty wealthy man. I am sure that I can afford this.”
“How much money do you have?”
“Seven hundred million.”
“Where did you get all that from?”
“My job and the fact that I won three lotteries. Also, my grandfather left me two hundred million after he passed away. People say that I am one of the luckiest people in the world. Winning three lotteries is when you know that I am just lucky.”
“Floyd, I have to give you credit for this, but there is no way possible that I can allow you to make this decision right on the spot. After a good nights rest I will call you back tomorrow and tell you what I think. Until then, just do whatever you want.”
“Well, thank you Dave, I really hope that you can allow this.”
“We’ll see, Floyd, we’ll see.”

I went home that night in a great mood. I already had a feeling in my gut that Stern was going to allow me to make this new franchise. This would be great for the NBA. The publicity will highly increase and everyone will want to see this great, new franchise in action.
I decided to get down to business. I thought about renaming the stadium to the Baller Dome. Maybe even adding on and adding a new line of offices in the building for the general manager, team owner, and head coach and many other jobs.
I called up my friend John Carson about the idea. The phone rang three times before he answered.

“Hey, Floyd, what’s up?”
“Hey nothing. Big news, I asked David Stern about our idea. He says he’ll think about it. By the way he sounded, though, I am almost one hundred percent sure that he will allow this.”
“Dude, really? This is awesome! So, have you thought of any ideas yet on anything?”
“No, not yet, but that’s why I called you. I need you to start working on some ideas. Note some elite people that we could try to hire for a position with the team, note some possible players and just about anything you can think of. I’ll call you back tomorrow, okay? See you then.”
“Okay, I really hope this works out! I’ll get to work immediately. Bye.”

I hung up.
I was so excited and I just couldn’t wait to hear Stern’s decision on the team. I had so many ideas about the organization that I couldn’t hold them all in. I grabbed a pencil and paper and then I started writing down my ideas.

After compiling my list together, I noticed that all of the staff wasn’t filled out except for my job. I would have to make a public announcement and try and get people with some management background, sports experience, and/or business. I was encountering a major problem though. I only had listed about half of the jobs that I really needed. I decided that it would okay though because maybe if I get together a very good staff, some of us could kind of cross over and do another job as well. All I really cared about was getting a great staff and a great team.
After all this work, I glanced at my watch and it displayed 10:11. I usually get to bed at around eleven o’clock or midnight because since I am only twenty-four years old, I am used to the college life. The college life consisted of eating, playing video games, studying, and parties. Then I would usually get back to the dorm at around midnight and then just fall asleep on my uncomfortable bed.

I figured that I had enough time to try and think about how I could tell Isiah Thomas that his team is going under and will be removed from the NBA. I had a feeling that he already knew that something was going to happen to his team. They had the lowest amount of money coming in than any other team in the NBA. The reason for this is that they have nobody interesting to watch. All they have is Stephon Marbury and he is already fading without playing up to his full potential. The other player that is a pretty good player is the three-point star, Quintin Richardson. The thing is, nobody cares to see this team play.
The Knicks always end their seasons with a bad record and rarely make the playoffs. The staff is another main reason why their team isn’t that talented. If they had some good coaches and trainers, then their team could be one of the best. They have some scarce talent on their team, but they just don’t know how to manage it.
I decided that I would just tell Isiah Thomas about the team being removed just by explaining the simple facts. I knew just about everything about how to get this new team going. All I needed to do first was to get David Stern’s approval. I decided that I would go to bed a bit early than usual.

I was grinning from ear to ear as I lay on my bed. I was feeling really good about myself and I really hoped that Stern would let this pass. This has been my dream ever since I was young. One day, I was going to make a basketball team. My dad always laughed at my foolishness, but I guarantee that he never expected me to get this far. Creating a new franchise would surely get the media’s attention. So, I would sure have to practice my charisma to get my voice going and learn how to take interviews and such. If I could create this franchise, I knew that I would take this team to glory. I knew that I would lead this team to the championship. This team would just have magic. They would finally get on the road to the championship.

All the way over in California, David Stern grabbed some writing materials just before going to bed. He began to write a message:

Call Floyd Turbo. It is a YES for his new team.
