Wisdom Teeth

This is a question for some of the older members of the forum.

How long does it take for these fuckers to grow?

I'm teething all over again and it's a real bitch. I can feel it under my gum but its so slow, I have had this pain for probably 2 weeks now, but it's getting worse. Yesterday during a basketball game I took a shot to the face and bit my tongue real bad on both sides and it has swelled up, so my mouth is a mess. I heard that Bonjela helps to ease the pain, actually, its not a pain, its more of an annoying ache.

I had a quick look on google to see if I could ind how long on average it takes for each one to grow through, but couldn't find anything, plus I would rather hear it from actual people. It's the one closest to my current back tooth on the right side of my mouth and I havn't grown any others. I'm hoping it's not hitting my other teeth

My sister is wisdom tooth growth is just starting. She took some toothache pain relievers and it felt better a bit.

Sorry to say but pain from wisdom teeth can last a long time. My brother had his hurting him off and on for two or three years, but I think that is definatley an extreme case. It just depends from person to person. My wife's hurt her for a couple of weeks when they were poking through the gums, but there is enough room in her mouth and they are just fine now. Mine hurt me a bit, and the roots were wrapped around the nerves in my jaw so I had to go to an oral surgeon to get them removed. Like I said, it is very different from person to person. My dad is 46 and his wisdom teeth have never bothered him a bit.

Why not get them removed? I got mine surgically removed when I was 15, right when they were starting to push through. You'll look like a chipmunk for 5 days or so, but ya never have to worry about em again.

They cut them out. I had 2 pulled and 2 cut out that hadn't come through yet (and were impacting my entire jaw) when I was 19.

I hate the dentist. Whenever metal touches my teeth its like fingernails on a blackboard to some people. I'l have to look into it, thanks for the info.

When I had my surgery done, I was under general anaesthesia, so I felt nothing, and woke up feeling like I shotgunned 6 beers. Wasn't too bad. The pain that followed the next 3 - 4 days was pretty shitty, though, as was having my entire face puffed up like a chipmunk.

No soup or any hot food when I had mine done. They said the hot liquid could cause the stitches to come undone. I did have my fair share of Jell-O, though, and ice cold water.

I'm 19 and i never even knew what wisdom teeth were until i asked somebody at a bbq the other day, lol.

I'm not sure what time they're supposed to start growing, but i've never had a problem.

I think it's between the ages of 17-21. I'm happy they are coming though this early (just gone 17) while the Dental care is free

Flite, no idea what it's like in NZ, but while I was covered by my parents' insurance as a student (up until I graduated college, in fact), I had free dental cleanings (2 per year), and only had co-pays on other dental work. Having my wisdom teeth extracted, however, was not covered, and if I remember correctly, was something like $4,500. As I said, the difference between the US' policies on this and NZ could be and are likely polar opposites, but just make sure you do all your proper research first, before you get sent a huge bill.

yeah I had mine removed about 3 years ago... it was a bitch because the bottom ones were growing at an angle (not straight up) so eventually they were gonna grow into my other teeth. there were a few times when they got uncomfortable because they were pressing up on the gums, but I eventually had both sets taken out. We had the option of giving me anethesia to put me out, but that shit is expensive and being a true Asian, my mom went with the other option of doing this time-release drug I had to take the night before to knock me out later. sacry part is, I remember waking up DURING the operation for a few moments and going crazy, but they put me back to sleep somehow. It takes like a full day or 2 of gauze in your mouth before the bleeding stops completely.

I had Jell-O brand chocolate pudding for a week.

i have mine growing in and it hasnt bothered me at all. ive got 2 growing rite now one is about half way and the other one is barely coming in but no pain at all. ooh and yea i totally agree with the metal on your teeth i hate that and ive had 3 teeth pulled in a span of 2 weeks it was a bitch and a half i was awake for the whole thing it sucked.

I had a couple that had come through pulled a few months back and although it's an expensive procedure - albeit not as expensive as getting them cut out under anaesthetic - I can't begin to describe the immense relief. It was getting to the point where I couldn't sleep at night since the pain was terrible. In comparison, the only pain in getting them pulled was felt by my wallet.

I still have one that's compacted (coming in sideways, still under the gum). I'll likely have to get it cut out at some point though.

Actually, I am fourteen (soon fifteen) and my bottom wisdom teeth are already growing (one is almost finished) and I have had no pain at all.

In Germany the dentist takes a look at them at the age of 16 and decides if they need to be removed or not, 80% they get removed ....
It is just under local anaesthesia, so you hear all the crushing when they are cutting and breaking in your jaw area .. that is kinda disgusting ... but is does not cost a cent (maybe 10 euro, since you have to pay that in Germany whenever you consult a doc, except regular examinations)

Although the surgery itself was really weird with all that sound (and sometimes it hurts a bit) I had no pain afterwards and recovered quite fast.
