"A New Season To Begin"
Image
"Ronnie McGill"

The new season is upon us, with just a few days until kick-off. We really don't know what to expect out of this North Carolina group that lost a lot of veteran leadership from last year. How will they fair? Will they be good enough to make it to a bowl game? Could they potentially have a Heisman candidate in Ronnie McGill? All these question can be asked about this season for the North Carolina Football Team. All of them, will be answered once the season is over.

North Carolina controlled the game with their offense today. Whether it was Joe Dailey passing, or Ronnie McGill running, it got the job done in an impressive fashion. " This is a great start to our season, but we still have a long way to go this year," said Joe Dailey, the Heels starting quarterback. "We attacked on all cylinders today and we just happened to have one of those special games." Dailey threw for 391 yards and two touchdowns in the game. McGill had the most impressive day with 4 TD's on the ground and one off a reception. "It was a sweet day for Carolina fans," said a happy McGill after the victory.

Ground Stats:
- Ronnie McGill: 22 carries, 151 yards, 4 TD

Today, North Carolina stayed with one of the top teams in the country all game. North Carolina was actully up the whole game until they gave up a touchdown and a field goal in the final quarter which tied the game up. As they went into overtime, Virginia got the ball first and scored the first touchdown. North Carolina could not follow suit, and lost the game. Joe Dailey had his worst game of this early season throwing 3 interceptions and no touchdown. Once again, Ronnie McGill controlled the game with his powerful style of running. He scored another 2 touchdowns to add to his total of 6 touchdowns now. On defense, North Carolina didn't struggle at all, only giving up 20 points in the regulation game. Larry Edwards had his best game of his college career. He had 12 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and a sack. Although Carolina lost this game, they have improved vastly since last years 5-6 team.

Air Stats:
- Joe Dailey: 16-31, 125 yards, 3 INT

Ground Stats:
- Ronnie McGill: 18 carries, 98 yards, 2 TD

Catch Stats:
- Jesse Holley: 8 catches, 70 yards

Defensive Stats:
- Larry Edwards: 12 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack

"Larry Edwards Moves Up Draft Boards"

Image
"Edwards is having a great year"

Before the year started, most experts didn't even know who Larry Edwards was. But, now after a strong first two games, the experts are starting to see his talent. Edwards, the 6'2" 230 pound senior linebacker, has 17 tackles, a sack, a pass deflection, and a forced fumble this year. One NFL scout said this week that Edwards could go as high as the 4th round in this upcoming draft. Edwards, who is from Key Largo, Florida, told us that he needs to continue to perform at a high level and win games. "If we want to win games, our defense needs to perform week in and week out," Edwards told us after the loss to Virginia Tech. "That will be the deciding factor in our year."

(1-1) North Carolina vs. (1-1) Furman

Image
"McGill had another huge game"

Image - 41
Image - 0

Furman didn't pose a threat to North Carolina all day and Ronnie McGill proved to be one of the best backs in the country. Furman is a I-AA team, so this is what we should expect to see happen, but North Carolina played great anyways. They showed that they could play defense and run the ball. "Our overall philosophy is to run the ball effectively and play defense," said coach Mason after the game. Ronnie McGill told us that he suffered a minor injury, but he will play next week. He had 24 carries for 211 yards and 2 touchdowns. The only problem that NC had all game is with the passing attack. Joe Dailey was pretty cold the whole game and never found a rhythm. We can hope that he will find it very soon.

Air Stats:
- Joe Dailey: 12-25, 127 yards, 2 TD

Ground Stats:
- Ronnie McGill: 24 carries, 211 yards, 2 TD

Catch Stats:
- Bernard Foster: 2 catches, 41 yards, 1 TD

Defensive Stats:
- Larry Edwards: 7 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack

(2-1) North Carolina vs. (2-1) #25 Clemson

Image
"James Davis had a big day"

Image - 8
Image - 38

Clemson came out with all the weapons today. In the route over North Carolina, 38-8, James Davis and Will Proctor controlled the NC defense. "They were pretty much attacking us at all cylinders," said the cornerback Jacoby Watkins after the loss. "We didn't play up to the potential that we have shown in the start of the season," he added afterwards. The run defense was a major concern giving up 144 yards on 17 carries and 3 touchdowns to sophomore James Davis. Most of the yards came in the first half as Clemson's offense scored 28 points. On a bright note, Ronnie McGill had another great day. He carried the ball 18 times for 109 yards and a touchdown, which happened to be UNC's only touchdown of the day. ""I felt great running the ball today against a good defense. I felt like I was making all my cuts and running behind the line. The offensive line was great all day," McGill told reporters after the loss. Joe Dailey had another dissapointing day at the quarterback position. He completed a mere 12 passes out of 29 attempted. The leading receiver, Jesse Holley, only had 5 catches for 14 yards. Dailey also had 2 interceptions.

Air Stats:
- Joe Dailey: 12-29, 82 yards, 2 INT

Ground Stats:
- Ronnie McGill: 18 carries, 109 yards, 1 TD

Catch Stats:
- Jesse Holley: 5 catches, 14 yards

Defensive Stats:
- Kareen Taylor: 4 tackle, 1 tackle for loss, 1 INT
