what has happened to the comedy action-film genre

Postby MacGuyver on Tue Nov 21, 2006 3:33 am

first of let me start my thoughts on the past comedy action films. not until recently i came to realize that i was a big arnold z fan. i always thought his films were okay, but not that great, lately after i bought 3 DVD's of his past films [TRUE LIES, COMMANDO, LAST ACTION HERO] that i realize my favorite movei genre of all time-the comedy action- is dead.

yeah i know most of you prolly are in diapers by then or were into puberty to even think about the fil industry, but still i am guessing you have come across to this types of films.

what has happen to it? where are these genres nowadays?all we have now is CGI induced action films that are trying hard to slice in bits of comedy and add cheesy lines. this bores me. poohoo!

back in the days the hero of this films always came out unscatch and gets the chic at the end of the movie. now all i get is a head ache of plots with twist and turns almost every 20 minute or so and always there are no super villain s involved but mostly government conspiracy or cop-related films.

i miss the good ol days lets say the late 80's and the 90's. there were so many great films of the past and hollywood fails to deliver the next arnie or sly stallone.

now that arnie is into politics and sly is somewhat getting wrinkled all over, and wesley is now not cool, who else is left?

here's a list of my past comedy action films vs. the latest comedy action films

1.commando
2.running man
3.rocky series
4.over the top
5.last action hero
6.true lies
7.lethal weapon series
8.police academy
9.starship troopers
10.die hard series
11.total recall
12.steven segal's films
13.naked gun series and some leslie nielsen films

now unto the latest flicks
1.transporter
2.oceans series
3. these are only the 2 i can think of

your opinion on the topic  [/u]

woah macguyver...some of those werent meant to be funny...die hard? steven segal? rocky? running man? over the top? those are all dramatic movies. yeah they have elements of comedy but come on. You talk about action comedy, wheres jackie chan? You got the Naked gun and Police academy but they're more spoofs than action flicks...i'm just greatly confused...

I don't know what you're talking about, because comedy-action or "buddy cop" movies are still quite popular.

This may come as a shock to you,but Rocky VI will hit theaters next month man.

I got to agree with illini,he makes sense, half of the movies of your list weren't even ment to be funny.Come one .. Rocky series an action comedy ? I can't remember a line from the movie that was comedy funny.Arnold was well known for his comedy action movies, but he is in politics now.No use crying about it .We are at the stage, where other genre's are more preferably then comedy action.

Rush Hour was the only movie that came to my mind when I thought of action comedy

i'm so sorry to confuse you guys, but what i'm trying to say is we don't get to have the hero like what arnie did to commando before. you know the kick ass super hero who is super invincible and killing baddies like they were garbage. i hope you guys remember the Hotshots series?

man charlie sheen character there is the bomb! and the naked gun series? there is no denying they don't make those kind of movies anymore.

yeah there are occasionally jackie chans and chris tucker, also eddie murphy tried it with pluto nash. but the hillariousness compared to the hero vs.super villain types of action-comedy is somehow gone.

i'm sorry i put up some titles which to you guys are not of that genre. but hey i do think they are even funnier that most of the new movies that came out. remember the diamond theft who became a fake cop just to go back to the police station because he hid the diamonds there? then he has another movie where he was a mexican-fbi?

it didnt even come close to that much funny, worst owen wilson and eddie murphy teamed up. i'm not against african american going into comedy, but the all the blings and bad-ass lines in Bad Boys ain't nothing compare to arnie's characters before.

bottomline is we don't have an action hero lately, and the tag the last action hero was best put to rest to arnold's character i guess. i simply don't find jackie chan that much of an heroic icon either, he just is damn lucky to win it against the mob most of the time.

hope you get my sentiments.

i'll post some lines of the 80-90's cheesy characters soon compared to the newest action-heroes of today, and by then you will se the difference

OK, but here's the thing...the comedy your seeing in arnold movies etc. is not usually purposeful...it is an accident made by poor cliched hack writing. While in Rush Hour, Hotshots, and Naked Gun: the absurdity is on purpose (specifiaclly in naked gun and hot shots). I think i can agree that action movies are dead. The last good action flick not based on comics i saw was SWAT and that was 3-4 years ago...;

we agree so much on that my friend. but i think that the cheesy one liners in arnold's films are deliberately written. i can imagine the writers sitting on their chairs thinking how would arnie scream the lines of "KEHILLL YOUU NAHAWWW! or ALL AH CAHN THINK ABOUT IS MEY CHENNY!" and laughed about it.

my point is we don't get to have the same cheessy heroic character like he does anymore. i want the wirters of the present to came up with a new character that will last ages e.g. terminator, rocky balboa, johnny matrix[commando],jack slater and many more back then.

the trend now in hollywood is comic-based films. and i agree "rush hour" tried its best but the characters there are just as not as loveable as then.

when was the last time we have a film that ha supperb infact to the industry like ALIENS or the PREDATOR? is the creative department all washed up nowadays? an action hero icon is very hard to have these days.

that was after he broke the guys neck.

more arnie's one liners:

TRUE LIES:
(arnie and bill paxton riding on a red sports car, after arnie knew about jamie lee's affair with bill)

bill:"Shes like all these babes: You get her pilot lit, she can SUCKSTART a leaf blower! And shes got the most incredible body! Mmm, pair of titties that makes you wanna stand up and beg for buttermilk! Ass like a 10-year-old boy!!"

arnie:"really? what about the husband?"

bill:"dickless!!!"(then arnie laugh a very sarcastic smile, have a dream sequence where he back-hands bill paxton and bill's neck breaks)

(arnie chasing the terrorist down inside the hotel lobby while riding a horse)
arnie:"soorry, excuse me"(he said it like it was normal for a guy in a horse chasing someone inside a hotel  )

(arnie all drugged up so he now couldn't tell lies)
arnie: "What can I say? I'm a spy."
jamie lee curtis looks emotional for a moment, then slugs him.
jamie lee: You bastard! You lied to me?!, well have you ever killed anyone?

arnie: yeah, but they were all bad!

jaime lee:are we gonna die?

arnie:(with a straight face) yup!

(arnie goes to jamie lee's office and leaves in a heap. He's walking in front of the bus and Tom Arnold tries cheering him up:)

tom:"I had no idea nothin' was wrong, right? So I come home one day, and everything's gone. Furniture, clothing, everything. She even took the ice cube trays out of the freezer - WHAT KIND OF A SICK BITCH takes the ICE CUBE TRAYS out of the FREEZER?!"

arnie:(pulls him to the side of the suv):stop cheering me UP!

aziz: do you know what this is? [unveiling the nuke]

arnie: is it an espresso machine? no wait its a snow cone maker.is it a water heater?(then the look of aziz face says it all)

scene where arnie fires the missile with the terrorist attached to it
arnie: "youre FIRED"

lastly arnie screaming to jamie lee

arnie: DA BRIHIDGE IS HAAWTT

:D i really am guessing this aren't bad unintentionally poor cliched script writting, because they were all hillariuos enough for me. you should see more of true lies to see what a hero Harry Tasker(arnie) really is

When my pals and I used to get drunk in college, we'd spout off Arnold lines, attempting his accent. It all stemmed from his soundboard, if I remember correctly...

Some old favorites:

"If it bleeds, we can kill it!" (Predator)

"Who is your daddy and what does he do?" (Kindergarten Cop)

"Get to thee choppah!!" (Predator)

"Dylan!!!" (Predator)

"You are one ugly mothafuckah." (Predator)

"I'm a cop you idiot!" (Kindergarten Cop, I think?)

In regard to you saying hollywood is bringing up the next arnie, i think that the Rock is more than stepping into the role of action superstar...
not only is he a great action star, but he can actually act and his charisma does wonders for his films.. (see: Be Cool)

yep they are considered as a comedy-action, and the 2 films are a good effort on their part.

with regards to the rock, it has been 3 years or 2 since his last film. most of his films are not so comedic either. maybe the next project will be, it's up to us to find out
