Q&A With Grizzlies Head Coach Mike Fratello
The Czar Stops By NBA.com To Answer Some Questions
NBA.com: How far can you see this Grizzlies team going this year?
Mike: Oh, theres no doubt in my mind that we will be going back to the playoffs. We just want to improve, any time you do something better than you did last time, you have improved. So, by that we are aiming for at least the second round.
NBA.com: You have said on numerous occasions that Rudy Gay will start. What do you think he is capable of this year?
Mike: I'm afraid of what this kid can do. He is a great rebounder, athletic, long, NBA ready scorer and most of all knows the game of basketball. Yesterday during practice he had 5 blocked shots in a first to 7 scrimmage. I appluad Jerry for grabbing this kid for us, he's a special player. I'm not going to delve into stats or anything, but by seasons end don't be suprised if he's our 2nd option.
NBA.com: Where does Jake Tsakalidis fit into your rotation?
Mike: Well, thats a tough one. After Pau's injury we knew we needed a big guy to come in and help Stromile in the post, Jake was our first answer but recently we have had second thoughts. Brian [Cardinal] is more of a smal forward, so we had to rule him out. Lawrence [Roberts] is still finding his way in this league and will not start. That left us with Hakim [Warrick] and Alexander [Johnson]. I really like what Johnson has showed us, but the rotation will likely be decided during the pre-season.
NBA.com: Are there any trades you are looking at this season?
Mike: I can't say right now, but we are looking for a clasic back to the basket big man who could either start or play plenty of minutes off the bench. It will most likely involve a trade because we have many undersized PF/SF's and we need a classic big man to bang along with Pau. Trading for a player like that is something we are looking at, but it all depends on how we are playing during the first games of the season.
NBA.com: Do you have a style that you would like your team to play in?
Mike: We are going to be a run and gun team during the time without Pau. Theres not really anything else we can do about that, because without a post threat like Pau or any consistant scorers its tough to play a grind it out style of play. We will run and force teams to play that syle, and if they are not used to it, they are going to get very tired and thats where we will have the upperhand. If it works well by the time Pau gets back, we will stick with it. If not, we will slow it down with the addition of him to our frontcourt.
NBA.com: Thanks for stopping by. Best of luck for the 2006/07 season!
Mike: Thankyou for having me.
