Lakers Fall Short, Suns Brilliant in First Half
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

PHOENIX, Arizona. (AP) -- The Los Angeles Lakers started off on the wrong foot against the Phoenix Suns and fell behind quickly in a nightmare first half. The Lakers combined for just 24 first half points while the Suns quickly amassed a 22 point lead at halftime. The Lakers made a comeback in the second half and at times trailed by as little as 5 points but the inexperience and injury hampered team couldn’t get past their Pacific division rivals.

Andrew Bynum had a tough time adjusting to the pace of the Suns attack but held his own by grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking a surprising 6 blocks. His 12 points came on 4 for 13 shooting from the field and he struggled from the charity stripe sinking just 4 of 8 attempts. Maurice Evans, the hero of the Lakers’ game against the Golden State Warriors, struggled at the start missing his first 6 shots of the game. The Lakers’ newest leader finished with 16 points but he missed the majority of the third quarter after he fell on his leg due to a collision with Shawn Marion. Shammond Williams showed his importance to his new team as he sank several clutch treys to pull the Lakers from 13 points down with 2 minutes left and got his team’s deficit to 6 points with a minute left to play.

Steve Nash was the reason why his team won as he made several big shots in the second quarter to help his side open up a 20 point lead. The reigning MVP finished with 22 points and 6 assists. Marion was just as important as he cleaned up on the glass in the fourth quarter and made the most of second chances. He finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Kurt Thomas came off the bench to grab 9 rebounds but his effect of the game came off grabbing boards off the offensive end and converting them into easy buckets.

The Suns’ break-neck pace got the best of the Lakers as they ran their offence to perfection and often frustrated the visiting team. Their swarming defence worked in forcing missed shots from the Lakers’ biggest player in Bynum. However, after halftime, the Lakers turned it up and tried to slow things down. The Lakers’ zone defence allowed Williams and Evans work on stopping the Suns’ guards to make anything happen. After the Lakers got to a 6-0 start for the quarter, Evans suffered an injury and was forced to the bench. Everything wasn’t in vain though as his replacement Jordan Farmar was stellar scoring 8 of his 10 points off easy lay ups in the third quarter. This allowed the Lakers to get as close as 8 points in the third period.

With Evans back on the floor the Lakers had the momentum in their favour but Vladimir Radmanovic struggled missing three long range shots allowing the Suns to increase their slender 5 point buffer to 9 points and then eventually leading by 13 for a large portion of the final quarter. Things got worse as Farmar was forced to the bench with his own injury but Williams was great after coming back onto the court. Williams scored three treys down the stretch and helped the Lakers get back with a mini comeback. Unfortunately, the rest of the Lakers struggled in the clutch with Bynum missing two easy shots and Evans missing a lay up in the final 3 minutes of the game.

“If Vlade and everyone wasn’t cold, we could have easily won this contest,” Kurt Rambis said at the end of the game.

Lakers Sign C Jahidi White

Jahidi White

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- NBA journeyman Jahidi White joins his fifth team in his eighth season after the Los Angeles Lakers agreed to sign the 6’9” 290 lbs player. White was most recently signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers but was recently dropped by the Ohio side.

The Lakers agreed to sign the big man for a one year, minimum contract in light of several injuries hitting the squad. Bringing White to the Lakers means that the team will have a dependable defensive player who is known for his high energy play, work on the boards and shot blocking ability.

“Jahidi is a great addition to our team,” Kurt Rambis addressed media, “He does have problems with holding onto the ball and does get into foul trouble but as an organisation, we trust that he will make the most of joining our team. He’s a real team player who hustles and sets screens for his team mates. We are excited for him to join us.”

White’s signing means that Andrew Bynum may need to take a back seat for the veteran at the start of the regular season. However, the Lakers have hinted that the two may start together as an alternative.

George played basketball at Georgetown and was selected in the second round of the 1998 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. In 2003, Washington traded White for Phoenix Sun Brevin Knight and the Charlotte Bobcats selected White in the expansion draft in 2004. Injuries hindered White’s mobility and playing time as he was eventually cut from the Bobcats.

White’s long absence from basketball is a concern for the Lakers but the team is confident that he will regain form or at least provide the solid defence that the team sorely lacks with the injuries of Kwame Brown, Chris Mihm and Lamar Odom.

It is suspected that the Lakers passed up on signing Antonio Davis for White.

Yeah well, I needed a player like him more than anyone else... And low scoring is good right??? I was able to hold Phoenix down but my attack was horrible. :(

I like the signing of White. Allthough he's slow as a snail he's a great defender. I might get him in my dynasty too, depends on how well A. Davis is doing!

Mon Nov 06, 2006 11:47 pm

I was gonna go with Davis but he's injured in real life so I didn't touch him.

I just needed White for his post defence. (Y)

Lakers Rout Nuggets in Final Exhibition
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

DENVER, Colorado. (AP) -- The Los Angeles Lakers were impressive in their final preseason game as they put in strong performances in the first and the final quarters of the game. The Lakers backcourt of Maurice Evans and Shammond Williams took care of business, combining for 51 points and 10 assists. Andrew Bynum was solid for his team with 14 and 10 before he unfortunately got injured.

JR Smith and Kenyon Martin led the Denver Nuggets with 21 points apiece. Martin added 11 rebounds but shot horribly, going 10 for 30 from the field. Team captain Carmelo Anthony added 20 points and 8 rebounds in a relatively quiet night for his Nuggets, continually swinging the ball into team mate Martin instead of going for his own shots.

The Lakers got off to a quick start, leading 9-2 at one point at the beginning of the game. The Nuggets struggled due to the intense pressure of the Lakers defence and due to the work on the offensive end of the floor, the Lakers were able to build a 13-0 run that spanned from the end of the first period and ended a few minutes into the second.

After a lot of hard work grinding it out on defence, the Lakers allowed the Nuggets to build a 10-0 run towards the end of the second quarter that carried them from 46-23 down to a more respectable 46-33 score line. Earl Boykins was the catalyst for his side as he continually got through the Lakers defence and dished the ball to his team mates. “We thought he (Boykins) was going to score a lot for his team,” Kurt Rambis spoke of the Nuggets’ star bench player, “We were lucky he decided to give his team mates a go this game.”

The Nuggets fared even better after a strange twist of events. With the Lakers up by 15, Andrew Bynum was injured in the third period. Then one minute later, Marcus Camby went down to a knee injury as well. The Nuggets then closed the gap between the two teams to just 6 points at times after going on an 8-0 tear towards the end of the quarter. The Lakers finished the quarter with just a 10 point lead.

The fourth quarter was when the Lakers’ new ‘star’ backcourt of Evans and Williams turned it up. Evans was on fire, sinking several tough shots to score 12 fourth quarter points while Williams was vital, finishing off the Nuggets with a late three pointer and finished with 9 in the final period. “Mo and Will really gave us a boost in the final quarter. Denver were coming right back at us and we needed someone to get us back into gear,” said Luke Walton who also had a good game with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists.

Nuggets star Anthony praised the Lakers players, “Without all of their starting players, the Lakers aren’t doing half bad actually.”

Game Notes

Andrew Bynum returned to the action for the final 3 minutes of the match… Jahidi White wasn’t planning to play but went on after Bynum was injured, he was solid with 2 rebounds and 1 point while changing the direction of a Kenyon Martin shot… The Lakers play their first game of the season against the Phoenix Suns… [u]Ronny Turiaf, fast becoming a crowd favourite, narrowly missed out on a fourth double double in 8 games… The Lakers were 4-4 during the preseason…

Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson to Return?

Kobe Bryant Phil Jackson

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Kobe Bryant has stated that he is likely to play in the Lakers’ season opener while his team mates Lamar Odom, Smush Parker, Kwame Brown and Chris Mihm still need time to heal. Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson is also planning to make his own return after hip surgery to the sideline.

“I’m confident that I will be playing in the season opener,” Bryant told reporters, “I’m looking forward to running with the team again.” Phil Jackson was also vocal about his own impending return to the sideline, “It’s been a good break but now it’s time to get back to work. Kurt (Rambis) and Brian (Shaw) have both done a commendable job running the team while I was gone.”

The Lakers went 4-4 during preseason play, including two losses to the Phoenix Suns whom they play in the regular season opener. “We’re looking forward to a tough challenge this season and what better way to kick it off with a game against the Suns?” Phil Jackson asked his own question to the media.

During the 30 minutes press conference, the head coach spoke of his aspirations to just help the Lakers ‘get on their feet’ and perhaps start to advance in the playoffs within the next two seasons. “I’m looking for contributions from guys like Kobe, Lamar, Kwame and the young guys too.” He also said that the progress being made by Andrew Bynum was a great confidence booster while rookie Jordan Farmar was a pleasant surprise.

Jackson was in good spirits as he even joked about his newest player Jahidi White, “I haven’t spoken to him but can someone in here to tell him to lay off the doughnuts? They are making him fat!”

Jackson was optimistic about his star player Kobe Bryant returning to action but was also cautious, “This season may be tough for Kobe to get back into playing shape. At least at the start, he will be slower than usual. I’m just asking fans to be ready because I don’t think he will be scoring 40 points a night.” The Lakers who were knocked out of last year’s playoffs in the first round are looking forward to their first game against Phoenix.

nice win, keep it up...

and can u tell me that what r ur detail settings and computer properties( like RAM and stuff)

I would have preferred that you sign a guard or a swingman since Odom and Parker are still injured, but I guess White is still a fairly capable player and Maurice Evans is playing very well while Kobe seems to be well on the mend.

I didnt need a swingman at all... with Evans, Williams as starters and Vujacic and Farmar capable of doing something off the bench... I had to go with a big man since I only got Bynum by himself and Cook/Turiaf at PF and Vlad Rad sharing time with Walton at SF...
