What is "God" ?

What is "God" ?

Postby Axel on Mon Oct 30, 2006 7:48 am

Being athiest/agnostic, I'm always interested to hear what other people think God is. Is God gendered? If so, male or female? Is God simply a figment of our imaginations? Someone we blame for all of our faults?

Or does God really exist?

What do you think and why?

I am not an atheist but I do have strong doubts about God's existence. Most of that disbelief stems from me thinking that he is seperate from the world we live in right now. I don't believe in the "things happen for a reason" bull shit. I think stuff just happens and this God has nothing to do with it. IMO, God is not gendered or even something concrete or something we can see. I don't know what he/she/it is. I can most closely associate God with the feeling of love. So basically, I am very confused myself and I doubt the existence of a "higher power". And then there's heaven. I don't think there is an afterlife.

Now I feel so immature. It wasn't intentional and I didn't want to offend anyone. I believe that it's up to yourself what and what not to believe in and shouldn't be thrown off by others. The overall topic is quite important. Differences between religions have started wars and still do.

It's mostly a cultural thing. I myself come from a old pagan culture that was forced to christianity about 800 years ago through violence and sufferings, so "God" would have been our sworn enemy. Then again the pagan culture had multiple Gods, that were supposed to reflect the soul of nature, weather, etc.

Atleast now people have the right not to believe everything that they're told.

Everyone has their own Gods. Mine's still MJ.

It's funny that replies like this one have their own discussion going on, as to why they are useless, bad for the forum as a whole, and wondering why jackasses continue to post them...

Y'all took that "bad for the forum" thing to the extreme. Laxation is right that this topic has been done to death at most forums (this one included), but it's not a dead-end topic by any means. Even if people talk about the same general things this can spawn good discussion. Now because of that, I don't think it's necessary to bring up that it's overdone. Then Axel went way over the top with his reply, you're not helping your thread any by responding to that. You can just ignore him and then, like magic, the discussion continues. And that is certainly not a post that is indictive of the forums being dead, or him being the kind of poster that causes that. Drama queens...

As for the discussion: God. It's a vast concept. It's one that we can never truely understand. From the stand point of Christianity God is outside of time, always has been , always will be, the creator of everything, has unrelenting love for all, etc. I favour this kind of belief, but I don't always like to associate with organized religion. So often fanatics (and even those not quite as extreme) will try to turn their opinion into God's opinion, when really they are just idiots. Putting up walls around what I believe, and having that include those types does not appeal to me.

As for who is God? Whether or not God is male or female, has a big white beard, or whatever is inconsequential. I don't feel anything like that is important in the slightest.

Lets all pretend I made that post. (y)

I'm always reluctant to post in these kind of threads because my views are such that even though I am a "Godfearing man" (as many would call it) I can come across as a nonbeliever. I dont do any form of organized worship because whenever I am in that setting I always come out feeling that whatever went on that place of worship was not genuine. I just dont want to associate myself with any one group. I know for sure I believe in A God but I wouldnt point my finger at just one. I also never think of whether that God is male or female or what they look like because thats just not very important to me. Whoever it is I give them a little prayer now and then and try to do my best being a global citizen.

I had made a post earlier, but decided I'd be seen as Mr. Bad if I kept it, so I deleted it.

Basically since Colin & Dada have voiced their opinion, I won't be the "starter of trouble".

The thread has been done to death, if bigh0rt you're so interested in going by the books, you should've merged the topic with the same thread that was made a year ago. Not to mention the Bible thread, shudder.

Anyways, this was the point I was trying to make when I said it'd be better for older posters to go away...we've done almost every topic debatable, now let the new people have their fun...rehashing old topics.

God has his own page on wikipedia.

God is beyond gender, and god is not who we blame for our sins, rather, that is ourselves

all good is from god, and all evil comes from ourselves...

but we are never far away from god

if u reach out to god an arms length, he will reach out to you a fathoms lenght,

at least that is the muslim opinion, i think

God just is.

I'm a Christian, but after reading a bunch of books set in the time of King Arthur and the beginnings of widespread Christianity, I'm not sure how this whole worship thing should work. It just seems kind of fake to me, the whole 'gather and watch the priest communicate with God while you try to do the same'. I'm not saying that I don't believe in what the Bible says, because I do, but I like the pagan-style worship better, where you pray on your own time and trust God to watch over you.

It's probably just a phase for me, and I'm pretty sure it comes from reading about the Church exploiting people for hundreds of years, but whatever. :|

EDIT: I just realized what God is! He's my avatar!

The big thing about church is that a lot of it comes off as fake to me. Especially any out-loud prayer. People just seem to be saying what they think the people around them would like to hear, or what would make them look like a "good christian". By leaps and bounds I prefer just having conversations about this kind of thing with people in a forum kind of setting. BTW, that's not "internet forum", the word 'forum' existed before ".com" entered modern day lexicon.

You guys shouldn't let the actions of the Church determine your opinions on God, just how I don't let the actions of extremist Muslims affect my opinion of whether or not God exists. Persecution, genocide, etc. are acts of humanity, not God.

I do think God exists. I don't think God cares of what denomination you are, as long as your beliefs and actions are benificial to humanity. Now, I stand firm in that belief, but being a Muslim, there's one thing I'm confused about; if God truly doesn't care what religion you believe in, why do I follow Islam? Why should I follow any specific religion at all? The only thing I can think of at this point in my life is that Islam has certain rules, barriers, and beliefs that guide me to becoming a "good" person. I don't think Christianity would do the same, at least in my case. I guess this is something I'll learn as I mature, and I'm sure we'll all have different points of view 10 years from now.

John Lennon is God, Yoko is Judas and Liam Gallagher is Jesus. It's that simple. Listen to the Beatles and Oasis and your guaranteed entrance to heaven (which is a giant concert in the sky with all your favourite bands playing and free beer and kebabs).

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "in my case", but Christians aspire to be like Jesus, a man without sin. Is that not a "good" person?

No no no, that's not what I meant at all. For example, drinking alcohol os forbidden in Islam (sounds crazy, eh?). Now alcohol isn't necessarily a bad thing, not at all, and most drinkers are good people, I'm sure. But it does increase someone's chances of acting irrationally. It's really a personal preference

Jesus is considered a sinless man in Islam as well, and all Muslims try to be as close to Jesus as they can get. In Islam, he's on the same level as Muhammad.
