Sport 'soreness'

Postby Fitzy on Fri Oct 20, 2006 11:30 pm

I was really sure about what to name this topic or where to put it but oh well, here goes

this weekend is gonna be pretty big for me, tomoro in A grade cricket we are bowling and im expecting to bowl 15 or more overs in the day, then on sunday i have to go to hamilton to play another match to try and get into the representative team from western victoria

i need some help, because before i bowl, on the weekends and at training i always stretch up, and that does me good because im a fast bowler, but after ive bowled, especially the next day im always really sore in my shoulders and lower back. now normally, i accept this, with trainings on tuesday and thurday and games on saturday, the days break makes my muscles heal and well enough for the next trundle, but this weekend im going to have to be fit to bowl straight away, so i dont get a few days rest

i was just wondering if anyone has any good ways i can not get the soreness on sunday so i can bowl to my full potential? maybe stretching down could be a good start, or possibly things like a warm shower to keep the muscles warm or using deep heat.

i guess i just want to know, what post-game warm downs or rituals do you guys do after sport to make sure you dont get sore the next day?

your second-last paragraph is pretty much on the money. except for the deep heat, i wouldn't really be tempted to use that straight after playing. if you have any soreness before/during a game, use it then.

After my basketball practices I was always last to leave, until the gym locked up. Next day I would be sore and my muscle would feel real tight. One night after practice I decided to have a cold bath and the next day I felt fine, been doing it ever since. It seems like the opposite of what you said so maybe Im abnormal.

Interesting... and it doesn't work with hot baths? I always thought it was the other way around.

I decided to have a cold bath and the next day I felt fine, been doing it ever since.

I read something like this but I can't remember the exact details.

It's like making your body feel numb to the soreness/pain because of the cold. Same principle as putting ice in your arms, legs, shoulders during/after a game like what baseball pitchers, basketball players, and quaterbacks do.

It even suggested that the best way is to take a hot bath after the activity and a really cold one before the next activity or vice-versa, I forgot which is which.

I remember seeing an episode of that Bobby Knight show on ESPN and a bunch of guys trying out for the Texas Tech team were told to go sit in a cold tub after a practice and one of the coaches was mad because this one guy jumped out pretty early and sat in the hot tub.

I'm pretty sure it was the cold tub that's supposed to relieve soreness, but I'm not 100% sure.

Stretch, and have a warm down jog... that's the best way to avoid injury and soreness. (Y)

Actually, yeah I would have to second that. Stretching with a light walk/jog before and after anything that's physically strenuous is the best way to prevent injuries.

@ fitzy: try bowling slow-medium, the change of pace confuses batsmen, but it really only works for one over.
