EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- A shock training accident landed Los Angeles Lakers starting centre Kwame Brown and Lakers reserve guard Sasha Vujacic onto the Lakers’ ever-expanding injured reserves list. Brown and Vujacic collided in training and Vujacic injured his troublesome left foot. Brown complained of pain in his right shoulder and his status is listed as day to day.
The Lakers are already without All-star Kobe Bryant and their other centre Chris Mihm who both underwent knee and ankle surgery respectively. In addition to this, forward Vladimir Radmanovic has been playing with a sore right hand and coach Phil Jackson still hasn’t returned to the team as he recovers from hip surgery.
Stand in Coach Kurt Rambis shared his frustration with the media, “It’s a difficult time for us because we’d much prefer to try and create some chemistry between the players. It’s only a relief that it’s only preseason though but the fact is that our core group of players won’t have much of a chance to bond together during this preseason. I would expect that the start of the regular season may see us off to a shaky start.”
“However, we will now be able to let our younger players play a lot more during the preseason and gain some experience. I know that this will also help players like Lamar (Odom) and Luke (Walton) grow as leaders on and off the court.”
Vujacic is expected to be back within a week and Brown’s injury may keep him out for 2 to 3 days. Bryant is rumoured to be ready to return to training in a few days while team doctors have advised that Mihm will be unavailable until the beginning of the NBA regular season.
“Our (team) aim is just to have everyone back by the start of the season,” Rambis said.
The Lakers play their next game against the Seattle Supersonics at. It is expected that Andrew Bynum will start in place of Brown. Lamar Odom, Luke Walton, Smush Parker are expected to join Bynum as starters. Rookie Jordan Farmar and veteran Maurice Evans are reportedly battling for the final starting spot against the Sonics.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Seattle Supersonics open their Preseason on the road against the injury plagued Los Angeles Lakers tonight. The Lakers are missing Kobe Bryant, Chris Mihm, Kwame Brown and Sasha Vujacic; all out with injury.
The Sonics had a disappointing 05-06 season as they failed to make the playoffs despite making it the season prior to that. This season, they are looking to return to postseason play and the team is excited to make their preseason debut. “It’s (preseason) a time for our team to learn to play with each other and hopefully we learn about each other well enough to compete in the regular season,” All-star guard Ray Allen said after a recent practice.
Allen is coming off his best statistical season of his career and is looking to be a major factor in getting his squad back to the playoffs. The Sonics, though, need help from everyone on the team including Rashard Lewis. Seattle travelled to Los Angeles without starting point guard Luke Ridnour and forward Danny Fortson.
Former Laker Kareem Rush signed with the Sonics and will be looking to lock up a guaranteed playing spot with the side. Rush is optimistic on his chances, “I think that if I play well in the next few games, I should be able to make the roster.”
The Lakers are coming off a big win over the Utah Jazz in which Lamar Odom led the way with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Vladimir Radmanovic, who inspired the Lakers to beat an early double digit deficit in Utah, will play against his old team and will most probably be matched up against ex-Clipper Chris Wilcox. The two were traded for each other last season.
Despite the fact that a match up between Kobe Bryant and Ray Allen is off the books, all eyes will be on the two young Lakers players Andrew Bynum and Jordan Farmar. LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) -- Rashard Lewis sunk a three pointer with 14.5 seconds left to silence the Staples Centre and put the Seattle Sonics ahead for good. In a hard fought comeback, the Los Angeles Lakers failed to match their opponent’s offensive game and subsequently lost out in the final quarter.
Ray Allen scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half and broke multiple Laker fans’ hearts with his pin point shooting in the final period when Seattle created a healthy lead early with a 12-2 scoring run. Lewis finished with 29 points while Chris Wilcox finished on a double double with 11 and 11. Rookie Sear Sene played brilliantly and finished with a game high 15 rebounds.
The Lakers suffered from their lack of depth due to multiple injuries on its roster. Lamar Odom led the team once more with a near triple double as he racked up 20 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists, while adding in 3 blocks for good measure. Smush Parker shook off a slow start to the game and tried to put on his best Kobe imitation as he finished with 26 points. Parker was close to unstoppable in the final quarter as he buried 6 jumpers to try and get his team back into the game.
The game began with the Sonics taking a quick 9-3 lead but the home side quickly recomposed themselves and chipped in at the visitor’s lead. Before long, the two teams were back on even ground and from their on, it was a shooting exhibition as both teams traded baskets.
It seemed that Seattle had the upper hand as they repeatedly gained 5 and 6 point leads but thanks to the Lakers’ three point shooting, the home side were never far behind their opponents. This lasted until the end of the third quarter though and by the start of the final period, the teams seemed to only have been warming up.
Seattle once again for the better of their inexperienced opponents and cruised to a 12-2 run at the start of the fourth quarter, courtesy of Ray Allen and Damien Wilkens. Parker stepped up and hit several shots to try and bring the Lakers back form behind but LA never got close to their opposition until there was 3:41 left in the game.
A Parker jumpshot cut the Sonics’ lead to just 8 before the Lakers regained possession thanks to their full court press. Brian Cook scored on the fast break via a layup and the Lakers found themselves with a chance to get an unlikely win. “We thought we had lost,” coach Kurt Rambis stated, “But we never gave up hope even when we were down by 14 points late in the game.”
Ray Allen hit a seemingly impossible shot from near the baseline with 2:12 left in the game. Maurice Evans squandered a chance for LA to score again as he turned the ball over with a bad pass. Earl Watson’s missed shot was grabbed by Chris Wilcox who put it back into the hoop and increased his team’s lead to 10 with 1:48 left in the game. Odom then stepped up, scoring a lay up on the next possession and then helping Parker double team and forcing a turnover from Allen. Parker dunked the ball with 1:01 left in the game and cut the Sonics’ lead to just 6 points.
With 54.5 seconds left, Luke Walton fouled Lewis and sent him to the charity stripe. Lewis hit just one free throw and the Lakers switched direction and got the ball to Odom at the top of the key. Odom, looking for an option, decided to drive and got the lucky bounce as he was hacked on the play. With a chance to cut the margin to 4 points, Odom missed the free throw and failed to convert a three point play.
The Lakers then buckled down on defence hoping to get a stop but Andrew Bynum, who finished with a modest 6 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists, failed to grab the rebound off a missed shot from Allen. The Sonics then proceeded to run the clock down and Lewis silenced the crowd with a three pointer as the shot clock sounded. The three pointer put the Sonics ahead by 8 points with 14.5 seconds remaining in the game and earned Seattle a win.
