injuries while playing bball?

Postby j.23 on Sun Aug 03, 2003 5:52 am

have you guys suffered any kind of injury while playing bball? .. before i got mine i used to think nba players that missed a couple of games due to sprained ankles were wimps, etc.. needless to say i suffered a sprained ankle myself while i was driving to the basket .. it was probably the worst thing i've ever felt in my life considering i have never gotten an injury this severe before.. it was badly sprained too, ankle was really really swollen.. it changed my outlook on nba players etc and it gives me greater appreciation for players that play injured.. (kobe, dirk, ai, etc.) up to this day my ankle still hurts for some reason.. lol.. its all good tho i can still play :P .. what about you guys? any injuries of sorts?

Man does a spained ankle hurt but, even though i knew i shouldn't I played with one and boy did it destry my game which is completely based on speed. It was during a hoop-it-up tourney also so I looked like a real jack ass.

I had the same exact thing happen to me three years ago. I was told to stay off my ankle for a month but I took a week off and started playing again. Ankle has never been the same.

My scariest injury, though, could have been a lot worse than it actually was. While playing on my driveway, I dove for a loose ball and tripped over a bush which caused me to land head first onto the concrete driveway. Fortunately, all I got was a whole a lot of blood but nothing serious and permanent.

2 years ago I was jumping for the rebound, and then I landed on somebody´s foot. It felt painfull, but I didnt tell my coach it was hurt so I just kept playing, that was a big mistake cause 2 minutes later it twisted again. so 2 weeks later when I still wasnt fully recoverd, I decided to start practicing again, and yeah......it twisted again. In total I twisted it like 7 times and it still doesnt look right, but I dont feel any pain so why worry :P

It was during a hoop-it-up tourney

i went to the NBA hoop-it-up in calgary this year and got 2nd place out of about 28 teams in my age group.

i have never really had that severe injuries, once i colided knees with some one and i couldn't play for a few days, it was just a HUGE charlie horse, i had such a big bruise there.

Another time i was playing by myself and i don't know what i did, but i kinda injured my back, i don't know what happened but i had to stop playing for a couple of days cause it really hurt, but after a day or so the pain eased up and it was gone in around 2 days.

Besides those i have had lots of bruises, twisted finger once, and a little more little things that i played threw

As I'm sure you've found out, missing games due to a sprained ankle is not cowardly, it's smart.

If you just turn an ankle you can usually walk it out and play on, but when you severely sprain an ankle you shouldn't play on it.

it was badly sprained too, ankle was really really swollen.. it changed my outlook on nba players etc and it gives me greater appreciation for players that play injured.. (kobe, dirk, ai, etc.) up to this day my ankle still hurts for some reason

I know what you mean. I've sprained both ankles twice, and I still experience pain in them from time to time - even if I'm not moving around. Severe sprains can cause permanent weakness in ligaments.

i once drove along the baseline for a layup and some some came in from the right side and tried to block my shot. i made the layup but when i came down, the guy crashed into my left leg knocking the kneecap out out place and whenever i tried to run, my left leg would literally collapse. and the stupidest thing/smartest thing i did was not to see a doctor. i had already broken my arm 2 months earlier and i didn't want to have my parents pay more for my medical bill and it was worth it. i stopped running for about 2 weeks and my leg healed up and now i can run again. now about my arm, thats a different story and i didn't break it while playing basketball so i dont wanna get off topic

yeah i was told to stay off it for 6 weeks i think.. before you know it i was playing by the 3rd week.. it was hard though.. i was scared to get off the ground for a jumpshot because i thought i would land wrong.. i got used to it eventually tho and i'm back to my old form..

whoa lots of ankle injuries here, cool :)

I know what you mean. I was very cautious when I returned from my first ankle injury. I was so conscious of the weakness I ended up injuring my other ankle.

It's a fortunate person who does not sustain any kind of ankle injury playing basketball - it's very easy to land on someone's foot or slip on a wet spot on the court, rolling or twisting an ankle.

That's the mistake I made - I wore an ankle support on my left ankle after I returned from the first sprain, but not my right. Compensating for the weakness in my left ankle and not wearing a support on the right ankle, I ended up injuring it too.

It should be noted that three of my four ankle injuries were caused by other players. There were a few guys who would kick your feet out from under you and put a foot between your legs in an attempt to injure you.

ouch man those guys sound like pricks.. did they do it purposely? i injured mine by driving to the basket.. and some guy tried to cut me off and i was going to jump anyways and i guess i somehow rolled it and i heard a crack too... it hurt like crazy.. but nothing was broken.. just massively swollen

Yes, it was intentional. I encountered quite a few bad sports and lousy attitudes when I played competitively.

I was playing 1 on 1 today against a friend, and after I rebounded I landed on his foot and twisted it (again for the 8th time) :x
