Working Summer in Melbourne

Postby Mark. on Sun Aug 27, 2006 5:53 pm

This November me and a few of my mates are heading over to Melbourne to see Pearl Jam play.

We plan to stay for most of summer (they are gonna stay for the whole of Summer, im coming back at about xmas time and don't know if ill go back over.

I was wondering what is the best way to find a job over there and if any of the NLSCers that live in Melbourne know of any places I can get in contact with to find some summer work.

There are probably 2 of us who are intersted in getting some kind of outdoor work (Fruit Picking etc), and 1 or 2 who are looking at something inside (They are Gingers and burn easy ).

Anyway any help or advice would be appreciated (Y)

You'll probably have to go outside of Melbourne, for a fruit picking job...regional Victoria most likely. I had a few friends who did it for 2 or so months last summer and got a shit load of cash.

Just look up a temporary employment agency. Heaps of British backpackers come to Melbourne and join one of these, they call you up the night before and tell you where you're working the next day.

Otherwise, there's lots of wineries only about an hour out of the city. Most of the grapes are picked mechanically these days, but there would be a few that still do it by hand. Best bet maybe looking on a site like seek.com.au a week or two before you come over to see whats available.

Awesome thanks guys, my mate emailed a few orchards etc and got a few replies. It sounds like some of them will pick you up and take you to the orchard which sounds good.

Any idea of what the average rent is like over there and are most leases for the whole year, because we were hoping to find flats which people only live in during the semester and will be looking for people to take on the rent during summer when they move back home...

You might be able to get a three month lease somewhere, but they're not that common. I would look around the Uni's as a lot of the current kids go home for the summers amd don't move in agains to the end of Feburary. YOu should be able to get a pretty average house for about $70 a week maybe. Check out www.realestate.com.au for places, and email the agents to see if they have any short leases on offer.
