Sore Knees... And I Feel Like I'm Falling Apart

Postby --- on Tue Aug 22, 2006 4:07 am

I thought i would ask you guys about this as well as seeing the doctor/physio wateva. Im only 16 years old and been playing organized ball for 2 and a half years, but for the past 10 months or so my knees have slowly gotten more and more sore, and i lose my bounce very quickly.

i used to have very poor jumping abilities off of 2 feet, but i was able to get up near rim level off of one foot at about 5'4 at one point. ive had migraine headaches my whole life and after countless drug prescriptions, doctor visits, i went to the hospital for an MRI scan to see what was up. they said they found nothing, directly after the scan i had the first bleeding nose of my life, for no reason. that was about 1 and a half years ago.

From that day, i have felt like im falling apart. i have a bleeding nose nearly everyday, a chiropracter found the cause of my headaches - my atlas (top vertebrae in the neck) was out of place, u can feel the bone sticking out the right side of my neck. my knees feel like they have deteriated and just recently my left leg went dead while playing ball and it still goes dead (2 days after) wen i move it to a certain postition, im just hoping its a pinched nerve.

anyways, what i wanted to ask was if anybody here that plays basketball ever had a point were they were in pain alot, especially in the knees, i feel like fuckin jonathan bender. and especially to some of the older guys, if they experienced blunt knee and hip pain as they grew. its just im starting to worry about my knees coz its been a year and they are just getting worse. thanks for any comments

Are you sure your sore knees are from playing basketball?

(Yes, I am implying something else)

Hey, I had pain on my knees years ago, I even had to use a knee pad. Doctor told me it was only because I was growing and I over-used my knees (I was all day jumping and playing basketball when I wasn't at school). And well, I stoped growing time ago and now my knees are better. I remember there were some days I couldn't even walk right, but my suggestion is that you only have to wait until you stop growing. Yeah, i've had that for the past 2 or so years but just recently it just went away. I can jump again. I think it's because I played basketball everyday at school. I think it's because of what CERVANTES said.

yeah, I would suggest giving yourself a break for most of the summer since the off-season is coming....if you want to work on your bball, work on your fundamentals....I played the Christchurch Schoolboys league years back....if you can hit the open jumper, you'll kill it....work on your passing, FT shooting, set shots, dribble etc....just drills that minimise stress on the knees....and don't do any more jump programs, at least for a while....you might just have genetically weak ass knees in which case, you're screwed....you might want to talk to Mark, I think he's had knee issues for years so he doesn't ball anymore....

I wasn't implying that you played other sports. I was implying that you liked to get on your knees to please, if you know what I mean.

Sometimes, if you gain weight you put more pressure on your knees and they start to become sore because its not used to the weight.

Have you put on any weight lately?

I suggest you to take a break, maybe a week without playing basketball or any other sport will help you. It works with me (I've had surgery on my left knee when I was little and when I overuse my knees, the left one hurts like hell).

I still have pain in my knees since I suffered from Knee Tendinitis a few months ago and I never healed correctly. I wear a knee brace and well, I don't play much but my knee still kills me when I play. I don't know what to do anymore either..

Nope i havnt gained any weight, if anything ive lost it. i went to the chiropracter today and he cant find anything wrong with the knee joint it self, im guessing its stress and maybe cartilage damage, hurts like fuck though

Well im 13 and my knees are really starting to hurt when i play basketball everyday at school.

I agree with others who say u should rest them.

If I rest them i seem to be fine, i think i over work them.

you know what i mean... i had a fight with some emos a few weeks back actually, i hate the bastards. anyways thanks everyone, i hope its fine after a weeks rest. im still skeptical wether it will work, because its been going for nearly a year now and ive rested at times thru out this period. i really think it is more than stress on the knees but i hope im wrong

My only advice would be to stop doing Air Alert stuff, I've learned from numerous people that it can fuck up your knees. Maybe it's better to wait with those programs until you've stopped growing.

And generally when your muscles feel sore, it means there's small cracks in those muscles, which will heal quickly. But when you keep playing and forcing your muscles, you might make those cracks bigger and cause some serious injuries.

I had the same problem with my knee's,but mine wasn't from playing basketball.I had an accident that affected my knee's.Some times the pain hurted so much, that I had to go to the hospital.I was on all kind of medicine and shit, but a few days back the pain stoped.I don't know why it just stoped.Don't worry just take a break and you will see, your knee's will feel better.

Keep playing basketball and doing jumping programs. Whatever you are thinking, dont rest your knees. Ever. That wont do any good.
Just think, the more pain you are feeling, the less its going to hurt when you stop.

well just to let you know, i went to a really good doctor yesterday and i found out that the knees are a problem with my neck being out of place, which in turn moves the whole skeleton out, and because of the chiropracter pushing the bone back in it is disrupting the rest of my body, and the knee problem will be fine once my neck is, which should be a couple more years. also i found out that the hip pain is a torn muscle and it should be another 2 weeks before im back to normal. thanks for the advice though

I didn't want to make a new thread on this but I have a question on injuries/conditioning.

I'm not trying to brag or anything but this is what happened:
Last season I could dunk, just the simple ones. Then the season ended and I didn't play too much ball except outside a little. Then the first week of august I went to this bball camp and got injured there, got cracks in my hamstring. So I went to the physio and didn't do anything for a month except some silly practice shit for my hamstring.
And just yesterday I was cleared to play ball again so I went to the local club's practice and I really noticed my conditioning was in a bad state after doing nothing for a month.
But surprisingly my hops got bigger.. I'm wondering how the f-ck that happened since I didn't do any jumping excercises and very little sporting overall for about 2-3 months.. :?

Maybe because you rested your legs for ages and during that period your muscles grew naturally, did you grow during the summer? I wish that happened to me
