The Comic Book (Movies) Thread.

Postby Jackal on Mon Jul 24, 2006 7:50 am

I figured we could keep the comic book movies and "regular" movies thread seperate.

Let me explain why I felt the need to do so. I've noticed that a lot of folks on the forums are comic book lovers. Now the thing is, discussing comic book movies tends to go on longer than a movie like "Click!" and "Pirates of the Caribbean 2".

Basically it's to discuss the movies and the comic books in general. I for one didn't have access to many comic books growing up so I'm not familiar with some of the characters that might make the upcoming films of the comic book franchises.

In any case, if the thread works out, dandy. If it doesn't, feel free to lock or merge it with the movies thread. Although I feel that one is a lot more "general movies" kind of thread.

Anyways, here's some news regarding the new Batman sequal...Heath Ledger has apparently landed the role of the Joker. Here's the announcement. I don't know if it's 100% true, given it hasn't come from the production house itself, but none the less...

Straight from the floor of Comic-Con 2006 in San Diego, MovieWeb.com/SuperheroFlix.com has learned that Heath Ledger will be playing the Joker in the continuation of the Batman Begins franchise.

The film is currently in pre-production and does not have a title at this time.

Your thoughts? I think he's a fine actor, he pretty much showed that in Brokeback Mountain but even in movies such as A Knights Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You he's been adequate. In other words I like him as an actor, he doesn't bug the shit out of me a la Jake Gyllenhaal. I'm sure Nolan will get the best out of him as the Joker.

His is look is what I look forward to most. I think it'll be subtle to start off with.

As I said, give me your thoughts...

thank you. that's what i've been saying along. i was reading/posting on other forums and the ignorance was unbelievable. many fans absolutely despised the idea of heath ledger playing the joker because of brokeback mountain. like you though, i like the choice of heath ledger being the joker. it'll be a different look for sure, (although i can see him looking like the joker from the animated series) but different isn't bad. nolan knows what he's doing and i'll take his word over insecure fan boys.

Not only that, but do they (fans of movies in general) plan to boycott any movie Heath Ledger is in from now on based on the fact he was humping another guy in Brokeback? I mean come on, it's a movie, move on.

I'm 50/50 on Ledger as The Joker. He always seems like he hasn't got an "edge" to him when he's acting. Even when he's being angry or aggressive he still seems kinda relaxed about it, and the Joker character occassionally snaps so I don't know how he'll deal with it. Either way he's Australian so I'm cool with it.

next sequel will concentrate on The Joker and they're already throwing names around such as Steve Buscemi - Robin Williams

British thesp Paul Bettany had both been linked to the role in recent months and has been explained by producers who say that they want Batman's chief enemy to be of a similar age.

Bettany might be pretty decent for the role but damn! Buscemi seems like a nice fit for the role! Too bad he's old compared to Bale (Batman).

I'm still not sold on Ledger, he's a good actor no mistakes about that, but his acting seems too laid back and relaxed (as what Jae mentioned) to play that pyscho Joker.

Well, his "angry" scenes in The Patriot were quite convincing. Where he stormed off from his dad (Gibson) etc.

But yeah, I agree, he's not exactly what I had in mind. Now the fun part will be to see how Nolan pulls this one off.

I want Buscemi . He'd absolutely rock. Although it would be interesting to see a pretty boy handle a role like Joker. Jack Nicholson was perfect for it, simply because he has that subtle psycho aura thing going on, while Ledger has nothing like that. But I still respect him as an actor - he showed that he's not afraid of accepting controversial roles, which is trait rarely seen nowadays.

Yep that's pretty much what I was trying to say. That being said, after seeing the cartoon version of the Joker (which this new series of Batman films seems to be more based on) he might be a better fit than I first thought. They've generally been great with casting, Katie Holmes being the only complete failure.

Anyways I'm really looking forward to Spiderman 3. On the official site they have a Venom wallpaper, he's not fully Venom in the pic but it looks fantastic all the same.

My mistake. Too many movie threads confuses the shit out of me.

My proposal for Joker: Colm Feore. The Storm Of The Century is being rerun on one of our TV stations and Feore is everything I expect from Joker. I want this guy to have more noticable (but quality) roles.

Is anyone here a bit hyped up about Ghost Rider? The release date is pretty far away, but I've always thought that Ghost Rider was a pretty bad ass idea for a super hero.

Yeah, I'm pretty hyped about it for three reasons. 1) Eva Mendes 2) Nicholas Cage ( I think he's a superb actor, I sat down and watched City of Angels the other day..coolness. ) and the special effects. It doesn't seem to go way overboard a la Hulk but it looks nifty none the less.

I think Crispin Glover would've done well as the Joker, he was quite maniacal in Willard and has the scrawny look aswell. Oh well...

That teaser trailer was the biggest hunk of cheese I've ever seen.
