Its like when a child has a ball, he only wants it when its taken away.

And btw jerry, Darrick Martin is also a free agent, and there are doubts that he will be back.

ok no one will want alvin williams cuz of his injuries and hes played like one game in 2 years...

and as for backup big men, well im thinkin more like the suns who played a smaller lineup a lot of times, so we could have humphries, bosh, rasho in the 4 or 5
everyone is saying humphries is did well in the summer league so maybe he might be able to take more time than we could rely on loren or araujo to take...

Theres a clause in his contract, that if traded and waived by the team he was traded to he's off the cap. Or something similar to that, thats the reason why teams will take him, cap relief

Its a team option for next season. He could have been off the cap this year, but he had a player option, and DUH!! he excercised it. Personally I hate the fact that the NBA allows injured or even retired players to excercise options. He's basically earned about 20 million bucks while not playing a single game.

And the reason a team like Charlotte would take him is because they have cap room, and it would be possible to add something extra like draft picks or cash, and they free up a roster spot.

The thing I wanted to see happen, was for Alvin to retire D'UH! But who is going to just walk away from all that money? Nobody will. So the thing I wanted to see was for Alvin to retire and the Raps hire him as a scout or assistant in some capacity for the same amount of money he would have made as a player. Sure he would be the highest paid scout but who cares, he's off the cap and your giving away money your going to be spending anyways

He has all but retired, but even if he was retired, he could still excercise his player option and earn all that money.

Unfortunately the cap doesn't work that way. He only way to get someone off the cap is to trade him. Even buying out his contract still keeps him on the cap (see Alonzo Mourning). But the thing is that as long as he is injured, although the team does pay his salary, they get it all back in insurance.

I don't have a big problem keeping him just to sit on the end of the bench and earn $90,000/hr to do nothing, because next summer when his contract and Mourning's come off the cap, we'll have some spending money again, hopefully to resign Mo Pete, and to give T.J. Ford an extension.

Yes, signing Ford and Mo Pete to an exention is the next thing the Raptors must do. As for William's contract, i really don't care any more. It seems like BC has made most of the moves he needs this offseason, and we are still under the cap. He's contract will come off next year, or maybe trade him to a team that need some cap relief next summer.

Noramlly your right but I'm 99% sure, unless something changed in the new CBA that if he retires for basketball occured injuries we can apply for "injury cap relief". Where as his salary comes off the cap. But if that happens he doesn't get any money, where in my idea both parties are happy :) Though it's never going to happen

Don't know where you're coming up with these rules. No matter what, unless we trade him, his salary is on the cap. There is no way to get out of it. The "Allan Houston" rule that was temporarily insituted after the CBA was ratified allowed teams to avoid luxury taxes on certain contracts, but they're still on the cap. But never has their been an oportunity to rid your cap of a contract without a trade.

It wasn't that big of a deal. The SF/SG positions are already mostly filled for the Raptors anyway.

It would've been nice to have a verstile player like Salmons though. But we are better off with no Salmons than a unhappy Salmons. I wonder where he's going next?

As for the Raptors, i have a feeling we are gonna be involved in a trade, which is for now the best way to get a player we like. FA market has pretty much dried up for the Raptors, where all the remaining good FAs have other teams in mind.

Salmons made a big mistake here. Nobody else is going to be willing to give him a similar deal, both in term and in money. His only other opportunity was Phoenix, but they've spent their money on Banks. Its pretty clear he's not going back to Philly, so he's gonna have to hope that someone like Atlanta or Charlotte are willing to sign him to an offer sheet.

I think Salmons was the final move Colangelo wanted to make, so I know I think he'll be looking to deal for something else now. But I'd be happy if we just signed Garbajosa and left it at that, and just start the season as is. If there are glaring issues, then try to do something.

Garbajosa can play SF, but he'll play PF mainly. Bosh and Bargs will play C from time to time, and while Garbajosa can play the back up PF. Humphries will be on the bench mainly. I don't see Humphries stealing minutes from Garbajosa.

i think humphries will get more minutes than you think...
out of everyone in the summer league, he was probably most impressive (not that he was amazing, but a lot better than we thought and better than most of the other guys on the team)...
i still think that with what we have it would be difficult to trade someone without sending away one of our top players (bosh, mo pete... and i dont see that happening) because honestly who wants alvin williams or darrick martin??

well i was reading the sun this morning again and it seems that since salmons backed out, the raptors are eyeing fred jones from the pacers... i think that would be great..but then we would have sg/sfs fighting for minutes..

it would be

mo-pete/joey graham/uros slokar
anthony parker/fred jones/the 2nd round draft pick forgot his name from texas

It looks like it's happening. I hope Indy thinks highly of him.
