when i hit select/inverse the delete with the pen tool it tells me that the content is not directly editable does anyone know what the problem is

Well, whatever layer the stuff you want to delete is on, click that layer in the Layer Menu (so it's highlighted), then try.
And I'm going to see them in Toronto!

this is because you have to convert a path to a selection. Hit CTRL+Enter
