Plans for the fall?

Postby Cameron on Thu Apr 27, 2006 12:40 pm

While this is mostly targetted for Canadians, it can apply to anyone. Just wondering what everyone of an age to make a change in their life is doing in the fall.

I myself have been accepted to the University of Waterloo, Toronto, and Queen's University. I wanted Toronto but the Raps let me down too much. Looks like I am heading to Queen's (rah rah racism!) for general science.
Anyone else going to Queen's? (I'm guessing the likelyhood is quite small as there are so few canadièns on the board.)

What are everyone else's plans for next year?

EDIT: Just found a few random picks of the campus, it's one of the oldest schools in Canada:

This fall I'll be sending in all my college applications, and hoping I get a few scholarships. I'm hoping to get into UNC.

It looks like a great campus, Cameron. I'm happy for you.

As for me, I'll be a senior and I'll just coast through it. After that, I plan on taking a year or two off just hanging out and working a little. Getting myself into shape and then when I am 19-20 enlist into the Army or Air Force. During my time off, I will visit with recruiters to get the best idea of what I should do.

My half-sister went to Queen's and she really liked it. You should be good to go, and congrats on being accepted.

Next fall is grade 12 for me.

Congrats Cammo! :applaud:

I've heard good things about Queen's, and aesthetically, it's beautiful, so it's an environment that would make studying and learning enjoyable :) What are you planning to take when you move on from General Sciences?

I'm going for my last year this coming fall, but I have to start thinking about a career. In fact, I have a job interview today with a design firm for a summer job. So I'm crossing my fingers and hope for the best. Ack, I gotta get ready

I'll be hopefully entering my somphore year at the Faculty of Social Sciences (mayor: Political Science). I'll say it again: hopefully. I really don't want to repeat my freshman year, because that would really mean only that a year of my life went wasted and that my chances for going study abroad would diminish. Eight exams to go (out of 12), current average grade 9 (out of 10). I also want to move to my 'own' place in our capitol city, which was my original plan for this year, but it didn't work out. And I'll try to get a job on our national student radio ('try' is the key word).

Very nice campus, Cameron (Y). I hope I'll be someday able to study in Canada.

Thanks for the kind words everyone :D Those are only a few pics of the campus I could find, it is amazing to actually go there. All the old buildings blended with the new, and it's right on the water. Neat fact: if you fly over the faculty of music building, it looks like a piano from the top.

Ironically my (hopeful) plan is to only go to Queen's for 1 year  I will try and get an 80+ average and am applying to Pharmacy (Toronto, Waterloo, Memorial (newfoundland), Saskatchewan) so I will probably end up at Toronto or Waterloo anyway if all goes well.

Queen's is known for its partying - last year they got in so much trouble when they had 10000 people in the streets of Kingston just hugely partying, but then some people got out of control and like torched cars and stuff. Conveniently I'll be turning 19 (drinking age) the weekend I move in. However I am not a party person and plan to do most of my socializing on the NLSC.

Just to comment on a few things people said:
VanK, how are you the mayor of political science? ;) And yeah come to Canada, it's great.

Jing I'm surprised you know of Queen's, the only Canadian uni americans seem to know is McGill. Doubt I will make the ultimate team though

Cyanide I already answered yours :)

Wow Colin, your sister came a far way to go to school here!

Riot, happy for me? I like the new Riot :D

Lastly, KevC, what is great about Rice? That wasn't a statement in the form of a question; rather, I don't know much about the US college system except for Harvard and basketball schools. Is it awesome and really hard to get into? Congrats (Y)

Good luck getting into UNC. UNC Basketball is amazing and will only get better under Coach Roy. Athletics aside , UNC has great academics too. (Y)

Next year is my senior year in college. I hope to graduate but because of my suspension a few semesters back my graduation may be delayed. Damn engineering!

I will be trying to have a starting position next year and try and keep college offers coming along with keeping my grades up in case basketball don't work out. I'm going to be taking the ACT in October and that will be my 4th time because I'm taking it in June too.

Thanks :) Don't worry, I know people who got in with mid-high 80's, so if you can up your average a bit and write a good PSE, depending on the program you are applying to, you will have a good chance.

Mafia, what is the ACT?

Just start grade 11 and try out for the basketball team. Maybe get a job if I can somehow find a way to motivate myself to do some damn work and stop browsing forums.

Try not to get a job around computers, or you'll find yourself browsing the forum at work ;)

Riot, what are the SAT's? I've heard of them but what exactly are they for?

Mofo, I forgot to mention that co-op is the best thing you can do (especially if you stay an extra year so you have room for it and all your pre-reqs). I've co-opped at the local Pharmacy this year and it's given me an insight into the job, conversations with countless different pharmacists all with different backgrounds and advices (and positive reviews of the career might I add), as well as a part time job (which will become almost fulltime in the summer) once my coop was over. Mostly though, it's given me a career path and plan in life where before I didn't have one. There's no greater feeling than knowing exactly what you want to do - it's like I'm set for the next many years. Coop is excellent.

I doubt I have the credibility to land a computer job, so that's probably out of the picutre since it'll be my first job. :)

I was thinking along the lines of a more minimum wage job at McDonalds or something (although I'd like to avoid that and hope for a more pleasant first job).

SAT stands for Scholastic Assessment Test and ACT stands for American College Testing I think. Both tests are basically tests you have to take in order to get into college. Like if you do real good on the SAT, then you don't have to take the ACT. I just never took the SAT, just the practice SAT and I'm taking the ACT. This test helps decide what type of college letters you may get. The highest score you can get is a 36, and a good ACT score would be between a 22-27 which is what I'm trying to get.

Is it like, Math and stuff? Here they just look at required courses and your high school average. You have to write a few little essay but no tests or anything.

So like, if you were really out of it on SAT day and just had a bad day, did bad, you're screwed for college? That sucks :?
