I need some tips on Album Reviews

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

I listen to maintstream rap from time to time, mainly for the beats as opposed to the lyrics. If the language is really filthy (such as Play by David Banner), I won't listen to it. I prefer old school rap, and more of the early 90s than I do today's music. Rap didn't originate with lyrics describing sexual intercourse, but sadly that is what the majority of people want today so the market has catered to them. :?

Ima put my 5 cent in dis mug right here. Hip-hop and Rap isn't jus music. All of it is life. Rappers talk about wat they been thru, and ppl can relate cuz they been thru it. Sum songs present negative tho. Sum ppl dont like hearin dat, and i understand, but dats how sum ppl express dem selves. wen we hear sumthin like "Lean wit rock wit it" we loved dat. We havin fun wit dancin wit it. But sum ppl are so quick to judge and dont know nuttin about hip-hop or rap. they dont know why we listen to sumthin like dat. Its got a rythm dat we can bounce to. im not even gon get deep wit it cuz it will have somethin to do wit racism and dats tha main reason why hip-hop is so disliked. im not racist or nuttin, but im jus speakin tha truth. dis right here aint even 1/4 of wat its really bout tho. i aint even gon explain myself about all of it cuz cant nobody handle tha truth so..............

I'd like to point something out here. It is no better to talk about the troubles in your life in a cliche and unoriginal manner, than it is to talk about being in the club in a cliche and unoriginal manner. Yeah most of the time lyrics about an artists hardships can turn out better, but it doesn't always. One of the biggest things in hip-hop is that it's not always what you're saying, it's how you're saying it. That's the really original and unique part about rap.

They hear a couple of songs on the radio being played and think "holy shit they talkin bout' pussies!" and start thinkin that every single rapper does that. But unfortunatly no. IMO the best rap is the gangsta ones that talk about there life and what they been through.

This paragraph has convinced me that you have no idea what you're talking about. Seriously, you should not be an album reviewer. You'd be awful.

I differentiate between hip-hop and rap...

I'm not saying that all rap sucks, I'm saying that all the rap I've heard sucks... but maybe I will try and give those other ones a chance. I mean I'm all for supporting Canadian music (although that crab-bucket song by K-OS or whatever was the biggets piece of shit...) but if it's on the CBC then I guess it must be good...

well I consider myself a fan of rap, but not that new garbage that's come out from guys like 50 Cent, Mike Jones, Dem Franchise Boyz, David Banner, etc. etc.
that crap is horrible and makes me embarrassed to say I like rap.
Cam I think if you get a hold of some good rap it could change your mind... I like 2pac's work, Eminem I think is a great lyricist, Nas & Kanye West are decent, but if you're not really into mainstream rap, try listening to some Common, Mos Def, or Talib Kweli.

Rap IS hip hop

Fuck the is hip hop any good or not debate, I know it is. So I won't bother replying.

And Wankster if you want to get into reviews, just get started by writing a few. Get some feedback. Then send your material into a few sites, you may get payed if there interested in you enough.

A word of advice, in a review don't talk about every song on the album. Discuss the album in general, while mentioning a few songs here and there but never just write a review talking about EACH track.
Play the game, win the fight!

But isn't like, Jenny from the Block, considered hip-hop? I mean, I know it's garbage, but it's definitely not rap. BTW, we're not really debating. These people are trying to convince me that there is something in hip-hop "music" actually worth listening to. Why make a post to say you won't post?

J-lo is considered hip hop... I would consider rap to be a subgenre of hip hop. Black Eyed Peas could also be considered hip hop, but their music definetly isn't rap.

Jennifer Lopez is a watered down hip-hop form of R&B. She's basically singing over a hip-hop beat. But The Lox (a rpa group) showed up that particular track so it is more hip-hop. Black Eyed Peas are definitely rap. Why? Because their music features will.i.am and...the other guy or two, rapping. Other than that piece of shit Fergie they're all rap (and used to be quite good.)

Crabbuckit is quite a silly song. But I strongly suggest you take a listen to K-Os' "The Love Song". My dad is a big time rock fan and knows more about it than basically anyone I've ever spoken too, and he loves the instrumental part of the record, and the lyrical part. He might be a good gauge to see what you may like so I'll throw out some hip-hop that he likes. Music from A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Mos Def, and (a Canadian group) Mood Ruff. Try them out.

Final statement. Many rock fans I've spoken too are soooo quick to diss artists like 50 Cent and Mike Jones. And yet they say The All-American Rejects, Nickelback, etc. don't count in the rock debate because they're mainstream. Which is BS.

I think rap fans have had enough practice trying to defend the music that they've come up with a bunch of pre-written quotes and phrases to use in such an event. The formula is usually this:

1: Disagree
2: When pushed for reasons on disagreement, bring up artists such as 50 Cent, Nelly and whoever is considered mainstream and immediately separate them from the genre
3: Defend rap lyrics, point out the meaning in songs
4: Suggest people listen to various specific rap songs, list at least 5 of them.
5: Bring up "pop" rock bands such as Nickelback and Simple Plan as a defense mechanism.

That's how it seems to go most of the time.

When people are saying that they think rap sucks based on what they've heard on the radio that makes sense though.

Making a judgement of all of rap based on the 50 Cent's of the world is like judging all rock based on Nickelback. Some people still haven't figured this out.

he is because he sells records. unfortunately that is all that matters these days, but it's natural everyone wants to get paid

and it's a pretty weird that people try to separate hiphop and rap nowadays. like there is hiphop music and there is rap music...?
the real definition of hiphop: it's a culture that originally consisted of mc's, dj's, graffiti and breakdancing. but today it seems that rapping is the only way of expressing the culture. most of hiphop has sell out (N)
