Find any group of dumb people on the street, show them a map with Aussieland labeled Iran or France, and they'd believe it. Hell, go and do it yourself. I could ask Aussies where stuff in America is and they'd get it wrong. Doesn't mean they're stupid. Just that they don't care about where that shit is so they don't bother to keep/obtain the knowledge.

Most people, especially Americans, don't care about things outside their direct lives. Only weirdos like me can take those internet tests where you label all the countries on a continent and get only two wrong. (cause I flipped 'em! Damn you Yemen and Oman!)

Yeah, Australia should be an easy one. But come on, almost nobody I know can name all 50 U.S. states let alone put them in correctly on a map except myself. Geography just isn't that exciting.

People can name the Simpsons over rights/freedoms in the First Amendment and stuff. (For the record, like James Taranto, we can name both.) Because they think "government/history/geography" is boring or find it hard to understand.

In a related incident, one of my friends went to America a few weeks ago and stayed with a host family, and went to school with someone for a day. One of the people at the school asked him 'What state is Australia in?'

I could ask Aussies where stuff in America is and they'd get it wrong.

I find all of the wealthier nations pretty ignorant of the world around them, that's why you get the most amount of racist issues in those countries and fall backs. This whole Americans are stupid thing is really old, theirs alot of knowledgeable people here well maybe not geography wise but they are smart enough to know where the major countries are located and specially a place like Australia with quite a population of ex-patriots from their living here.

The media can easily play with your mind, I mean you can't let 10 people represent a whole country when its population is in the millions, heck not even 1000 people should allow you to cast a stereo type on a country.

They are not stupid because they are Americans, and they are not Americans because they are stupid. The only thing that defines an American is that they were born in the United States. If all variables were unchanged except for them being born in Aussieland, they'd be dumb Aussies instead of dumb Americans.

Then you must find poor nations really ignorant, because some of them don't even know there's a rest of the world. Their focus is not dying and finding food. They could care less if Kofi Annan's son is part of the biggest scandal in world history for example.
