Ways to answer a question w/o actually knowing the answer...

Postby TRUball on Wed Apr 05, 2006 3:31 pm

Alright, in my English Class, we were reading a book, and I just slept through it every class while we were reading all together. Since I have only read the first few chapters, I didn't do any of the homework questions for the book. So now I'm failing the term for this class but my teacher's cool so she said she'll give me a few days to hand in all of the questions. Now, I've gone through most of the questions only have like 6 or 7 left and I need some help. I've skimmed through some of the chapters so for most of the questions I've known the answer somewhat, on others I've just put something random that doesn't even relate to the story, but she values imagination and creativity, so hopefully she'll give me a mark for that. :D Hopefully. But now I've run out of things to say if I don't know the answer, so... I need some ways to answer a question without actually knowing the answer.

I didn't read the book for my last year's english, and I had to do an essay and provides examples for each topic, the teacher wrote the pages for the examples on the board and I got a B+ for the Essay :headbang:

Anyways, uh, probably not, unless you just write some random shit.

www.sparknotes.com has some stuff on common English work. Really good stuff for Shakespeare.

Damn... the stuff we're reading now is Shakespeare...

By the way, the book is the Chrysalids, if anyone cares. Also, the question I'm stuck on is:

"Summarize the Fringe man's philosophy

I could make up some stuff, but I did that for the last question, so it wouldn't look good.

Oh, the beuaty of today's youth. Why is that we, non-English speaking Europeans, read more English literature than Canadians, Americans, Australians,...? You need like one afternoon to read one of Shakespeare's plays. It's not exactly War&Peace, you know.

Nevermind, I got a few answer's from skimming through the last few chapters, and I just 'forgot' about the other questions. With all the ones I did it'll atleast bring my mark to a pass, along with the video that my friend and I had done for the project on the book. Which I have to say she was very impressed with. :P Thanks anyways guys.

Seriously people, do your homework. It's there, just read it. Go post in here if you need help finding references and not because you're too lazy to read a book that's in front of you.

Agreed, I dont think you should ask people for help unless you've actually read the material, or had a decent attempt, as my professor said to us the other day, "if you come to me with a question about something straight out of the textbook I will tell you to go back to the book, if its about applying something out of the textbook, thats when I will help you"

enough of my ramblings, but yeah readings are the easiest of homework (Y)

I don't know, maybe because on average, you only bathe 1/3rd as often as Americans?

No offense dude, but quit the American hating. It's played out. Really.

OH, and in regards to the OP, isn't that the guy who got pissed when I made literary references in that "random thoughts" thread?

Hear, hear. Ditto for the Australian bashing.

Now, for the topic at hand...as always, the best advice can be found on The Simpsons:

Really, where do you pull that information from? Any evidence to back up that assertion? I don't know about the other places, but in Oz we read literature, albeit contemporary or classical, throughout highschool. So if your attempting to be critical of Western/English speaking nations then I suggest that you stop making unfounded statements and broad generalisations, otherwise it will be you that shall be disconcerted and bearing that brunt of criticism.

I agree with this completely. You deserve to fail if you don't do anything in that class.

Damn, sorry I didn't get to this thread sooner. Me and my friends own at BSing papers.

If its an essay question, use the thesaurus, or just use your own set of advanced vocab to answer the questions. Also try to throw in references to "literary devices", such as tone, diction, syntax, etc. It doesn't even have to make sense, as long as it sounds analytical. If you have a general understanding of the book, you should be able to infer on the parts you don't know. There is also sparknotes if you need some additional chapter outlines. I didn't read the Scarlet Letter, The Joy Luck Club, and Black Boy for three different projects, but still aced everything just off that website.

Hope that helps.
