If you haven't seen Hurricane Katrina (and I presume you haven't), then how do you know it happened? You look at the aftermath ie. the wreckage.

It was actually a long process that came up a few times, and of course, the main character could not come to be convinced at all until near the ending, where O'Brien used rhetoric and convincing skill that finally got the main character to see how 2 + 2 = 5. It was crazy, because it even got to me and I could finally see how 2 + 2 = 5. It's just those numbers are so arbitrary, that I could see it was just a form that was assigned a code. I think the way I saw it was that 4 was switched with 5. Four is actually '5,' and five is actually '4.' Make sense?

Not really... becuase if you were shot from the back of your head fom point blank then you would basically die instantly and you would NOT know you got shot.

As for the Hurricane Katrina thing... I remember there being some kidns of video footages of the unfortunate event. So you basically have to believe it happend, and...also news stations all around thw world talked about it. There is nobody that will deny the fact that Hurricane Katrina did happen unless they havn;t heard about it, or sen the aftermath or the actual hurricane on video footage.

Back in the old days people relied purely on radio and word of mouth to know what was happening around the World. They didn't get pictures of the aftermatch, but they also didn't deny these things happened...

Yeah, that makes sense Cyanide. That's what I was thinking. Like how do we know 4 apples is actually 4 apples and not some other number like 6 or 7 or something else.

It's very frustrating and infuriating. I do believe there is a truth to the value of O O O O, though, it's just that I don't think humans can PROVE it equals 4.

I thought about it at school and came up with this:

There is no absolute TRUTH in the world, someone will always find fault with something (i.e. the KKK and WWII, if I remember my teacher correctly). The thing that we call TRUTH is actually just FAITH, we BELIEVE that it's 'TRUE'. We can BELIEVE anything to be 'TRUE' if we want, like cy's math example.
Basically, how do you think a person can you really know that they're right? About anything- physically, morally, etc…

You can only BELIEVE that they speak the TRUTH, there is no way to prove to EVERYONE that it's the TRUTH.

There. A perfect bullsfan009-style post. :P

With the number 4 thing, are you trying to say that a number was just assinged a name or there is just no such thing as "number" and we jsut assinged an amount a name (number)... confusing but yeah...lol.

We assigned both a number and a name to an instance of what we call 4 (four). It was also given value and properties, so now it has meaning.

What would math be like if instead of having ten single digits (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), we had say twelve single digits or just seven single digits before moving up to double digits?

I agree...that's interesting, huh? Because to me there is truth out there...like with answer's question:

The earth's shape isn't changing, right? So although humans may not be able to agree on and prove that it is a certain shape, it is a certain shape. So basically there's got to be truth out there.

I see what you mean, but what if we were convinced a sphere was actually a cube (i.e. Cy's math thingy)?

I actually think about this a lot; what can I believe is true? Maybe it comes from reading too many spy stories. :oops:

yes actually, i do. i probably have more of a life than you do. and a couple of pointers:

1. Rape was never mentioned. If you used your brain you'd know that.

Um, let's see. Let me copy bullsfan a little.

OO + OO = OOOO

OK, we all say this means: 2 + 2 = 4. Now, whatever number you assign to mean 2 and 4, those numbers will always stay the same. In other words, if instead of saying 2, you said H, and and instead of 4 you Z. H + H = Z. Whatever sounds you assign to mean 2 and 4, the answer is still the same. Do you get what I mean?
