LOS ANGELES-Kobe Bryant scored 30 points, leading six players in double figures, to go along with 6 assists to make up for Derek Fisher and Sadiku Boyes’ “nervous game” for a
105-82 win over the Utah Jazz in the Lakers’ home opener.
Fisher had 11 points on 1-of-6 three-point shooting, while Boyes had 6 points, going 3-of-13 from the field, 0-of-6 from the arc and 0-for-4 from the line.
“Man, I’ve never played for a crowd like this,” Boyes said. “What a great feeling. I felt like I had to put on a show and prove something to these fans, because they’re always so excited about this team. However, coach got me after the game for trying that.”
“There’s no pressure whatsoever when I play here,” Fisher said. “Its just the feeling of seeing these fans again, seeing Jack on his familiar courtside seat, seeing Denzel, all these people.”
Phil Jackson said that the two players will get over it.
“They’re professionals,” he said. “They know how to deal with stuff like these. It’s really a good thing that others are able to step in their place and pick up the slack.”
For the second straight game, it looked like no one would. In their season opener, LA fell behind fast before the reserves came in and took the lead. In this game, the Lakers fell behind after the 1st quarter, 21-20, with Lamar Odom picking up 2 fouls. Fisher struggled and Bryant put up 9 points.
When the next quarter started, Smush Parker checked into the game, and it was all LA from there. Parker hit a wide-open three-pointer, dished to Andrew Bynum for an alley-oop, and hit a long trey with the shot clock winding down. He had 8 points in the quarter alone.
“He’s really the team’s sparkplug,” Bryant said. “Just like that whole second unit, Smush provides a ton of energy. We can really be successful if they continue to do that consistently.”
Parker, Bynum, Boyes, Luke Walton and Ronny Turiaf are considered as the Lakers’ “sparkplug unit,” since they like to run and take guys off the dribble.
“Its like Showtime reincarnated,” Odom said.
Parker finished with 12 points, Bynum put up 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks, Odom scored 13, Fisher scored 11 and Kwame Brown put up 10.
Deron Williams scored 20 points on just 4-20 shooting, Gordon scored 16 and Mehmet Okur put up 14. Andrei Kirlenko was held to only 6 points.
