Always 12 min Quarters like in NHL 2003

Thu May 29, 2003 6:25 pm

There is one thing in all the last NBA Live Games, that no player of my team can be leader in mpg. That's because of I've always to play 8-min quarters to get realistic results and stats.

Now I've seen a kewl feature of NHL 2002 for example. You also are able to adjust the time of a quarter there. But the nice thing about it is that when you for example set a length of 8 min in the game it will be 20 (for NBA it must then be 12). Only the 20 min now are in real 8 min.

I hope you can understand me!

Yes, the idea's been discussed before. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as well with basketball, due to the shot clock and other timer related aspects of the game.

NBA Live 2004 is shaping up to be a great improvement in realism, so hopefully we'll be able to play a realistic game with 12 minute quarters.

Sorry I'm new the forum, so didn't know it has been discussed already. But I don't think it's a problem with the 24 sec.

We'll see...

No need to apologise. I just thought I'd mention it's been discussed before, just in case someone makes a reference to a previous discussion. :)

I think that would be a great idea, the shotclock adjustment would´t matter cause if I play a 4 min quarters, it would be better with shorter 24 seconds violations, cause then the cpu doesn´t wait the whole ordinary 24 seconds tho shoot but have to shoot in 8 seconds, thats good cause I like to play 4 min qrts without have the score be cut in a third (i.e thats
some 80 vs 70 to 30 vs 20).

ps doesn´t Larry Bird on the Andrew guys picture above look like an old lady ds

Well, you could have the time sped up -- yet still have the normal amount of seconds for the shot-clock.

It would make it difficult to get off that final shot to win/tie the game.

Well, that's right Andrew. After all I have to say, that I didn't think of all the possible problems...

I actually suggested an idea similar to this a while back, because I had seen it done in FIFA and thought it might be a good way of:

a) Controlling high scores
b) Playing shorter games while retaining realistic minutes per game averages

I think it was Metsis who brought up the flaw in the idea. Basketball has just too many clock related rules for the idea to work properly.

That's right, e.g. the 24 second rule is too important...

In basket ball there are the 24 second shot clock, 5 second inbound rule, 8 second half-court rule and the 3 second violation rule in the paint.

So that's a lot of things... And if you play with 4 minute quarters, well you could be in the paint for a second before getting called for it. And that's enough time to mark down the turn over for it.

This time shortening just wouldn't work. One thing could be done about this though. After a game it would calculate how large of a percentage did a player play and then mark down the same percentage played of the simulated time (usually 48 minutes). So if a player plays 20 minutes with 8 minute quarts, well he would show that he'd played 30 minutes in the stats, if the simulation was done with 12 minute quarters.
