Year 1 In Review

Year 1 brought the 'Cats flying in, hopes and heads held high. Their expectations were ranging from a championship to just getting to the playoffs. They were fierce and ready to be led to glory.

However, all was not well in Charlotte... The owner found a new GM who he hoped would lead them to glory in the short term. He hired CJ Patterson, a young man hailing from Arizona. The 'Cats went into the season, unsuspecting of what might await...

From the get-go, times were not so easy, yet the 'Cats started the season 6-8. However, they grew into a horrible slump, forcing GM Patterson to make this announcement to the players.

"I regret to inform you, that not all of you may end this season in a Cats uniform. The team owner believes that we should be as good as any team that's been around for awhile. He has demanded that I find a trade."

Left in awe, the players stumbled through a few horrible losses, but came back, and for a few short weeks seemed like they had it together again. Patterson was still told by the Owner to seek a trade. After failing to find a way to get Dwight Howard in a Cats uni, he turned to the Knicks, and Channing Frye. "If I can't get a young PF so I can move Okafor to the C position, I'll go for a young C, and leave Okafor at PF."

The Cats were a wreck, falling through games, looking terrible. The All-Star Break came and went, seeing the Rookies, led by Channing Frye of the New York Knicks and Raymond Felton, to a four point victory over the Sophmores, including Emeka. It also saw Kareem Rush fall into 3rd place at the 3 point shootout, and Gerald Wallace falling just short to Kobe Bryant in the Dunk Contest.

On the night of the Trade Deadline, the Cats traded Centers Primoz Brezec, Melvin Ely, and Jake Voskuhl to the New York Knicks for Channing Frye, Penny Hardaway, and Jerome Williams. "We looked for a young big man, and found one. Unfortunately we had to lose Ely and Brezec, but we must push on," GM Patterson said.

The Cats ended the season with a 29-53 record, 1 win shy of their hopes of 30 wins. LeBron James won MVP, Ben Wallace took home a fourth DPOY, Ron Artest brought home a MIP, and the ROY, to the dismay of Felton, Frye, and May, went to Andrew Bogut.

The playoffs went through, and finished, seeing the New Jersey Nets sweeping the San Antonio Spurs, 4-0, to win the NBA Championship.

The Cats now look to the off-season, wondering what new GM Patterson might do. Will he trade? There had been rumors of Emeka being moved, but why would he do that? Will he be able to re-sign key players such as Brevin Knight, and most importantly, Gerald Wallace? Throughout the season, Patterson had supposedly been looking to get money toward this off-season, to try and sign Joe Johnson or Michael Redd. Will he be successful? Only time will tell.

The Eye Of the Bobcats, let Year 2 Begin

Trade Rumors from Charlotte

GM CJ Patterson has reportedly been talking to the Magic and Pacers, involving a trade sending out Emeka Okafor. It's rumored that he wants either an Okafor-Howard base, or an Okafor-O'Neal base. None of the teams was available for comment.

News From the Warfront

The night was cold. As new GM CJ Patterson walked to his car, he thought about his plans for the offseason. He had successfully re-signed Gerald Wallace, Matt Carroll, and Jason Kapono. Though he hadn't liked the sneer Kapono gave him after signing the deal, he thought nothing of it now. Tomorrow was draft night. Through some miracle or another, the Bobcats landed with the first pick. Patterson came to what he considered was his first difficult choice as a GM.

Sign Joe Johnson, or draft Mattias Tomsa, the man who was planned to be the 1st pick. A 6'3 SG, Tomsa came from Latvia originally, and made a buzz in the NBA. Now Patterson had the chance to draft him, or did he want to draft somebody else and sign Johnson? The Bucks had re-signed Redd, but while the Suns signed Stoudemire, they couldn't keep Johnson.

Patterson couldn't sleep that night. After going through a 29-53 season, and now feeling pressured, he was amazed that this unique situation happened. Early in the morning, around 1 AM, he went to his favorite local bar. He had discovered it trying to find ways to forget about Charlotte's losses last season. "Hit me wit a beer, Ern", CJ said. He had a few beers, then, after checking out some of the waitresses, left. "Damned if I do, damned if I don't." he said.

He stayed up all that morning planning strategies how he could make this work. At 9 AM he took a plane ride to NYC with his assistant, Nate Daniels. The day wore on, and Patterson grew weary. With under an hour left, he went to the room his 'Cats counselors, scouts, etc. were to go to.

"The Bobcats are on the clock," the loudspeaker said. "Alright, it's settled, we're getting Ysu, right?" said David Cannons, one of the assistants, who was also a scout in Asia. "I mean, if we're getting Johnson, then we get the big man." CJ cut him off. "No, we're not getting Ysu. Centers are going to be there in the free agency. The Pistons couldn't sign Ben Wallace, and there are other centers I'm watching. No, we're drafting Tomsa." "What!?!?" cried team owner Phil Jacobs. "What about Joe? I was actually starting to look forward to him."
"We don't need Joe. We need Tomsa. He's going to be at least 7 million cheaper anyway." Patterson picked up the phone, and told the man waiting that they were drafting Tomsa.

"With the first pick, in the 2006 NBA draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select..." David Stern paused, waiting for the tension to grow. It grew alright. Within the 2 seconds he waited, people were going nuts inside their heads. The Hornets fans desperately wanted him to say Ysu or Barnes or Caffey. Anybody but... "Mattias Tomsa, from Latvia."

The crowd exploded with excitement. Not only did this mean that Tomsa was first as planned, but that meant that Charlotte was likely not going after Johnson! The draft proceeded, and the Bobcats chose another SG, A. Barros.

Patterson slept better that night, but still only about 7 hours. He knew his job was nowhere near done. The FA signing period started tomorrow. Time to set his plan into action.

Pistons Reeling, 'Cats dealing, and a Cliffhanger?!?!

The free agency period launched big time news, with 2 major signings in 3 days. First was Johnson signing with the Hornets. "We don't need him," Patterson had to keep reaffirming Jacobs everytime he saw him. "Seriously, we're going to be fine." While Jacobs was still worried, he reminded himself that he WAS the guy that signed this crazy bastard to be his GM. The next day, the Cats struck gold, but at the same time, had to spend gold. The Cats signed Ben Wallace, with over 14.5 million dollars for this first year, in decreasing amounts of 8% over the next number of years. With the roster sitting at 11, but not much cap space to work with, Patterson had his hands tied.

Meanwhile, the Hawks were busy angering CJ. They signed former 'Cat, Brevin Knight. They signed Sarunas Jasikevicius, who Patterson had gone after. They kept refusing to trade Boris Diaw or Josh Smith to the 'Cats, even in lopsided deals.
Al Harrington had continuedly been taking shots at Patterson and the 'Cats in the media. "What the hell is that guy's damn problem?" Patterson had asked Daniels at one point. "Beats me, but don't worry, we'll kick their asses in the regular season, right?" Silence. "Right?" The Hawks signed Troy Murphy, who the 'Cats slightly wanted, then they did the mac daddy. The move that made Patterson explode. They signed Chris Wilcox. Everyone had known Patterson had strived for Chris throughout season 1, and had declared that he would go after him with all he could. That wasn't the problem. The problem was, Patterson was building for the future more. By making Wallace's money decrease by year, that opened cap for more players in the future. But that crippled him now. He fell about $1.8 million short of signing Wilcox, one of his main goals.

"I'm not worried at all." he told the media. "Jacobs calls me a crazy bastard, and I may not have gotten Chris, but I'm not worried. No sir, I'm great." About 15 minutes later, Daniels found him vomiting his guts out in an alleyway. "Come on kid, you'll do fine." "Nah, Ben's great, but I just got word from the board. Those bastards are trading Emeka, Channing, AND GERALD!!" Daniels looked at Patterson in horror. "No!" "Mmhm-bluhhhh" Patterson vomited some more. "How much did he eat?" wondered Daniels. "Why the hell would they do that?" he inquired. "Well, it was a pretty damn lopsided trade." "And?" "And the worst part was, it was my idea..." Daniels was stunned. How could CJ have wanted to trade the 3 guys who he'd said were key parts of the organization? Was he mad? How would this affect the future? When he asked CJ this, CJ replied, "that's just it, it helps the future somewhat, but also hurts it." "Well, who was it for?"

Patterson took a deep breath. The cool air slightly calmed him down. Slightly. "They... they traded them... for..."

Patterson on PTI

"Welcome to PTI, my little imps. Today our guest has short time, so we start with him." Tony Kornheiser announced. "We are joined by Charlotte Bobcat GM CJ Patterson." Michael Wilbon said. "So how are you doing?" "It's been a helluva week, Mike," CJ said. "Now, we'll start with the big trade. Okafor, Frye, and Gerald Wallace, whom you signed to a multi-year deal just a few weeks ago, for Dwight Howard and Grant Hill. Why and how did this go down?" "Well," CJ started. "The trade was originally my plan for the trade deadline last year, but I saw the three progressing, so I ditched that plan. Then this year, the Board, which as you know is headed by Phil Jacobs the team owner, re-tried that trade, and it was accepted. I hadn't known about it until a couple days ago after it happened! I was tearing my hair out and going nuts!" "Hey, at least you have hair" Tony remarked. "So tell us what you plan to do now."

"Well getting Hill helps since our cap space will be higher coming this offseason. We are also looking at other teams now for expiring contracts." "So," Wilbon started, "it looks like you're going big after LeBron James, or whoever else is out on the market next year." "Yes, we are. Preferably someone young, with potential." "As a last question, we've been hearing reports on Jason Kapono acting up in team practices and through training camp. Any truth?" Tony's question waited a few seconds before it received an answer. "I've been hearing that too, but hopefully they'll get it resolved," Patterson said simply. "Alright, thank you CJ." "Yup thank you too."

Patterson stepped away, and walked to his office. "God damn Jason. That stupid little twit is gonna screw us up big time somewhere along the line." He got on the phone with his assistant, Matt Daniels.

Training Camp/Pics + Storytime

Charlotte-The Bobcats have exited training camp. Regular season starts in 2 days. Here are results: (pics are big, :P)

Ben Wallace just worked to keep his form up, including dunks!

Howard, being the young main man, perhaps the franchise player now, worked on his dunking and everything else. Here's his personal dunk contest

In your face, sights set on the playoffs.

Storyline- Behind the TC scenes...

Patterson had assigned the coaches, and was now watching his team run up the court. Ben Wallace blocks Howard, Tomsa flips the ball up court to May who slams it home. Felton gets the inbounds, takes it up the floor, passes to Hill who shoots and, SWISH! Felton and Hill exchange smiles. Which is what the team is doing. Except one. The one who sneered at Patterson soon after re-signing. The rebound by Przybilla. dishes it to Felton, who passes it... to Jason Kapono. Kapono fires a trey over Barros and drains it. He sneers at the rookie, who is scared and angered at the same time. "Don't worry about him, he's a dick", says Felton, who, along with Howard, is team captain. "What the hell did you say?" asks Kapono. "Jason back off him man, you got nuttin' on him," says Howard. Patterson steps over by Bickerstaff. "He been like this throughout training camp?" "Yup," comes the reply. But it's not Bernie. It's Phil Jacobs. "Hmm."
"Meh, you guys suck." Kapono leaves, and goes to the locker room. Alone. Ben Wallace, who has been quiet for the most part so far, explodes. "DAMN THAT GUY." He furiously walks up the the coach, owner, and GM. "EITHER HE GOES, OR GOD DAMN IT, I GO. I CAN'T TAKE THAT. HE HAS NO TEAM PLAY, AND HE'S JUST A DISTRACTION."

The first 5 games

The 'Cats opened up against the Kings. In the opener, they slowed up and fell behind in the first quarter, 32-24. At the half, they were worse off, 58-43. During the halftime intermission, GM Patterson came down and gave a speech. The speech:

"Everybody in this room has a job. Whether it's kissing ass hoping for a promotion, cleaning the god damn floor, signing and trading, dealing with all you idiots' mental issues, or you bastards yourselves, playing to your best each night. This job may not seem important, because it isn't. There are more important things, sure. Hell, life is probably pointless. But dammit! The way I see it, you just gotta try and enjoy it. You're all supposedly playing your hearts out in front of a home crowd of what? Thirty-thousand? Forty thousand? Hell, whatever the number, you are there to try and make their lives enjoyable. Damn, for all we know, there could be a hundred fans thinking "If these guys aren't even gonna try, what's the point of me trying at anything? And If I'm not gonna try, why live?" They could kill themselves! Each and everyone of you has a following, whether it's a few pre-teen girls gooshing over Matt, or many revering Ben's muscles, or the NC fans loving Sean and Ray, those fans love you. So make them proud. Hit your shots, stick to your man like molasses on a damn hot summer day, do the best performance you can, and we WILL win this game. Actors are there to entertain, musicians make music to enjoy, and you too have jobs. Jobs to go out and make the fans happy, make them proud. So do that job. Make this game fun, make it exciting, and damn it! TRY! Whaddya say boys? ARE WE GONNA TRY? "YES!" ARE WE GONNA WIN, DAMMIT? "YES!!!!!" THEN LET'S GO GIVE THOSE KINGS HELL!!!!!!! "YEAHHHHHHH" "

The speech clearly worked. The 'Cats drilled shots, stuck to their men, played great. From a 58-43 half score to a 72-71 end of third score, they were playing like a TEAM. They blew the fourth quarter open, Wallace nabbed 8 points in the first 5 minutes, and in the final stretch, Felton led the way, with Howard doing well defensively. The Kings were blown out in the fourth, 37-9. Final score: 108-82
Felton had 17 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists, and 3 steals.
Howard had 14 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 blocks.
POG Ben Wallace had 18 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 4 steals.

1-0, 81 games left.

After the fifth game, the 'Cats were 3-2, with things looking up. The day was Wednesday, and they had that day, Thursday, Friday and Saturday off. Then the Wizards, and then it was down to A-Town to play their rivals, the Hawks. "I can tell that this Sit guy is trying to do stuff, but like ours, their Board isn't very nice..."
Wednesday. 3-2. The first bad news of the season strikes. Not about the 'Cats though. Nothing about their players. It was about CJ. His life would change yet again. The 22 year old would go through a tough emotional time after the news, but business is business, and he had to get back to the grind. Especially after the following events:(TBC)
