Staff Hiring

Oct. 20, 2005 - A conference was held yesterday, and the bell of the ball was none other than Atlanta Hawks head coach, Mike Woodson. A wave of surprised whispers and disgruntled coughs spread like wild fire when he announced that an entirely new arsenal of staff had been hired to train his NBA roster.

"We, the staff, felt that this team needed a makeover," he announced, "something to bring them to that next level that has been just beyond their grasp for as long as we can remember." While he said this, the people attending had no idea he planned to wipe out the coaching staff and start from scratch.

In the 2003-2004 season the Atlanta Hawks had a W-L record of 28-54 (.341), and in the 2004-2005 season, their record was even more retchid, standing at 13-69 (.159). As crazy as Mike Woodson's actions may have seemed at first, he definitely has the right idea in revamping this squad's coaching staff. Also, with JJ (Joe Johnson) added to their roster, things may just click this year.

Apart from announcing the release of the current coaching staff, he announced that he had already agreed, and had on paper, three contracts. One of them was regarding a new assistant coach, one was for a new trainer, and the third a scout.

The assistant coach hired was none other than Mr. Big Time, Marty Bettman. This 54 year old assistant coach is said to know his stuff, and with big men in particular. He coaches excellently right across the board, on offense, defense, and athletics. We look forward to seeing his production.

The trainer chosen is a relatively unknown candidate. His name is Cornelius Carr, and he, according to Woodson, is as good a trainer as any. We will definitely find out come this season.

Lastly, we have who he claims is his new scout. Mr. Renjie Choi. Much like Mr. Carr, Choi is virtually unknown in the NBA, and Woodson did not have much to say about this new staff member except that he is confident Renjie is capable of filling this position as well as anyone else.

Well folks, there you have it. The struggling Atlanta Hawks have given us something to gossip about until season time, and we can only hope that Mike Woodson didn't make a giant mistake in his actions. Like I always say, a bad choice made for the right reasons still warrants full blame when iit blows up in one's face.

This year's training camp was a success to say the least. With Marty Bettman at the reigns, the Atlanta Hawks came out of this rigorous week better players, both mentally and physically.

"I knew that Mike (Woodson) had high expectations for me," said Bettman, "and I don't know why, but I felt compelled to live up to them." He chose to spend approximately 20% of his time with the team on offense, and 20% on athleticism.

"I felt defense was what this team was missing most, and so I chose to nag and nag, and we worked on defense for more than half of our time that week. I think it it definitely paid off." He noted that some players in particular had warmed up to defense and had become more comfortable playing it. For instance, Al Harrington had enhanced his rebounding abilites by picking up a few pointers, and Josh Childress had grown his man on man defense to a respectable level.

"No team is going to be completely turned around in one week," said Hawks head coack, Mike Woodson, "it just doesn't happen. It'll take time, and we're patient people."

With training camp behind them, the Atlanta Hawks can only anticipate how the season will unfold, as they prepare for their first game against the Chicago Bulls in under a week.

Thanks. I know what you mean, and there won't be any stacked lineups. I'm trying to keep this at least semi-realistic.

Hawks Meet Bulls in Season Opener

Atlanta Hawks (0-0) @ Chicago Bulls (1-1)

[Starting Lineups] [Atlanta Boxscore] [Chicago Boxscore]

[07/03/05, Chicago] - Right from the beginning of this game, the fans, the coaches, everyone in the arena, knew it was going to be tough for both contesting teams. Led by new acquisition, Joe Johnson, the Hawks hope to gain some momentum and win their first game of this 2005-2006 season.

Hawks Silence Stadium
There is no doubt in anyone's mind that every player on both the Hawks and Bulls roster put everything out on the court tonight. This high tempo game was electric, which might actually be an understatement. The final score was 116-106, and up until the last minute mark in the fourth, every point was worth a thousand pounds of gold.

"We had the lead early, but they just kept coming," said Coach Woodson, "everytime we sank a basket, they came right back on offense with a mild shrug. The least I can say is they were determined." Mike Woodson wasn't very far off, as the Hawks highest lead of the game was the 10 point lead they had to finish it. Also to note was the 14 lead changes, 6 of them in the third quarter. Although the Bulls took the lead multiple times they never got beyond 4 points ahead of the Hawks.

The Hawks were lead by All Star, Joe Johnson who had an astounding night, scoring 30 points, and picking up 2 steals, and 2 assists. Al Harrington also stole the show grabbing 25 points, and picking off 14 rebounds for the night. Also to note are Zaza Pachulia and Tyronn Lue, who grabbed 15 points, and 8 boards (7/7 FG), and 16 points (50% FG), and 8 assists respectfully.

For the Bulls, the story of the night was Ben Gordon, who whipped up a solid 26 points, 2 boards, and 2 assists. Not far behind him was Chris Duhon who got himself a double-double with 21 points, 10 assists, and 2 steals. Other notables were Tyson Chandler (13 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks) and Kirk Hinrich (10 points, 3 boards, and 2 assists).

"There were a few times the Bulls could have run away with the game, but we were fortunate they didn't, and we just held things together until the final buzzer," said Joe Johnson after the game.

While shooting an acurate 60% from the field, the Hawks were closely trailed by the Bulls, who shot 55% FG. "It just so happened it was one of those nights where everything falls," said Gordon after the game, as he shot 10/15 (67%) from the field.

This was your recap of the first Hawks game of the season. Have a good night folks, and catch the next one on November 4th when they butt heads with Paul Pierce and the Celts.

Tyronn Lue hits the three
Joe Johnson with the lay-in
Salim Stoudemire tries for the tré

The Starting Lineups photo is too small... I can't figure out how to make images larger on photobucket, so for the time being I used Tinypic as a temporary solution.

Red Meets Green in Game Two

Boston Celtics (0-0) @ Atlanta Hawks (1-0)

[Starting Lineups] [Boston Boxscore] [Atlanta Boxscore]

Left: Pierce hits the difficult shot, Right: Joe Johnson with the freethrow to complete the 4 point play

[07/04/05, Atlanta] - This was bound to be a highflying, superstar showcasing event, and that was exactly what all of the fans were waiting for. Hoping to start their season off on a good note, it is expected that Paul Pierce will try to obtain the hot hand for the Celtics as they try to bully Atlanta out of a win.

High Tempo Game Decided in Overtime
There was under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Hawks passed it to Johnson, who, after beating Ricky Davis (who managed 28 points, 11 assists, and 4 boards for the night) off the dribble, had his layup rim out to be picked up by Al Jefferson, who nearly got a double-double, have scored 17 points, and grabbing 9 boards on the game. After a quick three-on-two concluded by a layin by Pierce, the Celtics were up 101-95. After a quick time out by Mike Woodson, including a player switch of Marvin Williams (4 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists) for the fresh legs of Josh Smith, the Hawks once again set up their offense. This time, Salim Stoudemire came off a pick and roll and buried the open three, earning a roar from the home crowd. The game was now within 3 points. After a crucial steal by Johnson on defense, he dished it up to Smith who rumbled the arena with a huge slam and even more crucial foul. He hit his free throw to make it a tie game with 13 seconds remaining. With perfect defense, the Hawks managed to keep the ball out of the hot hands of Pierce, and forced Battier to attempt the buzzer beater over Harrington. He missed, thus initiating overtime and more hope for the Atlanta Hawks.

It seemed the Hawks had gotten their heads straight sometime between the end of the fourth and the beginning of overtime, because they came out firing on all cylinders. By the end of overtime, the Hawks had a demanding lead, and the second win of their '06 season.

Joe Johnson earned player of the game honors, picking himself up 39 points, 7 assists, and 3 rebounds, including a miraculous four point play in the second quarter. Although he definitely had a career worthy game, it was smothered by the amazing feat that superstar Paul Pierce whipped up for the Atlanta crowd. This spectacular athlete managed to score 53 points, grab 8 boards, and pick up 2 steals for the game. Also overlayed by Pierce's huge game was Al Harrington's double-double, and Josh Smith's equally good game. They scored 27 points, and 17 rebounds, and 22 points, and 4 rebounds respectively.

Well, we hope you enjoyed this recap of one truly spectacular and exciting game between two unhighly though of teams, and we hope you can catch the next one on the 6th when the Hawks catch the Pistons who will most definitely try to snap their two game winning streak.
