how to get better at basketball?

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

just stay on your man, don't let him out of your sight. if he has a shitty jumpshot, then give him the jumpshot, otherwise just deny him the ball or put your body on him. on offense, just keep moving, cutting and look for easy layups.

Defence is so easy to play it's not funny, my best tip is this:

When someone's going for a shot, people often tell you to "put a hand in their face"... obviously 99% of people just put their hand up in the air, which is great and all but piss easy to score over. What I've always done is put my hand literally inches from their face. You don't have to be particularly tall to do this and as long as you don't make contact it's perfectly legal. If you can't see, you can't shoot.

I'd say that 90% of the shots I contest like this miss. If they do go in it's either because I can't reach the persons face, or it was just a fluke. I had to play against a 6'11 guy once in a local domestic comp, he scored 2 points and shot like 1/10 because I could reach as high as his face and completely blocked his vision. Give it a try, it might sound silly but it's amazingly effective.

He had to be one jumpshooting mother fucker. If I were 6'11 and they put a 6'5 guy on me, I would be dunking and posting him up. I mean, I don't know a guy who is 6 inches smaller than me and can defend me effectively. But then again, your guy was probably a total beanpole and the difference in athleticism between someone 6'3 and 5'9 is much smaller than if you take a 6'11 and 6'5 guys.

Exactly like i said.....

hm, I managed to get better at basketball when I got transfered to a different team, kinda like Jermaine O'Neal style but it took me a few years at the new club to do it

the difference between my old club and current club is that my current team/club has better coaching/training sessions

Still didn't help my shooting

Although I'm probably the last guy you'd want basketball advice from (many of my friends consider me the Mark Pope of basketball), you just have to practice and play against people better than you.

Fuck what everyone else says, practice. Absolutely no better way to get better but play the game itself.

Funny you say that, his nickname was "Sticks" because he was so skinny. He didn't take a shot from outside of 10 feet, but he bricked all of the inside shots because I had my hand covering his face every time he shot. The only worry was that he'd just grab the rebound over my head, but I figured out if you hit him hard enough he backed right off. I've had guys 6 inches smaller than me do a good job on D against me, I think when you get your technique right and learn a few tricks height becomes almost obsolete.

not really i mean someone like Earl Boykins would not be able to guard Yao, he would just hold the ball above his head

I take pride in playing D, but I always had problem guarding one guy. He's 6' but longer than me (and I'm 6'3 with a decent wingspan). He's skinny, slow and not particulary athletic, but he could always get himself into the position to get the ball about ten feet away from the basket and shoot fadeaways whole day. I never succeeded to block that shot. And that's the only thing he can do, but he can make a living with it.

First of all, he said 2'1''. Second, no it's not, Boykins is 5'5'' and Yao is 7'6'', that's a difference of 2'1'' :|

Well Yao couldn't score on Dan Dickau so I'm not sure if that's too accurate.

Besides, we've all seen what Earl Watson did to Shawn Bradley.

Yougi wrote:Just follow him and play though :) Contest shots, keep your feet moving, and cut his dribbling hand.

That should already help.

If you're as conditionned as me (not at all), you should try to see what his weaknesses are, and play with them. ie: If the guy has no jumper, give him more room. If he can't blow past you, play at half your usual distance. If the guy gets the ball down before shooting (ie he goes from his knees to launching the ball instead of just having the ball over his head then launching), try to swap the ball while it is going up.

I'd have to agree with Yugioh, I am not conditioned too well but still managed to be one of my team's better defenders....I tend to play forward in zone defense or manning up close to the post....in addition to what yougi said, if defending in the post, forearm the back, you can do the old leg in between their leg trick (just don't get your leg broken or anything like that)....obviously keep hands up when they're going up for shot and as Jae said, get them in his face....if the guy is a freakin' huge MF, then just hit him in the guts, and he'll become a softass....a lot of big guys (6'8" and above can't hack that shit, especially if they are stick insects)....

most of all, play hard on D, give 120% on every play and you should find the results will come....and it will come with practice and game time....

good luck
