Do you play ball?

Postby Fresh8 on Sun May 04, 2003 1:06 pm

Hey... just wonderin' about who plays or not!

I've played for school in grade 8 and 9 (Only a 7 game season). I got MIP in grade 8; only scored about 5 ppg and didn't really do much else cause it was my first season... did start every game of last half of season. In grade 9 (last year), I had about 6ppg, 3rpg and 6-7 apg and won MVP. Our team only scored about 35 ppg together and I guess I contributed about half of the scoringfrom scoring and passing. We came 3rd, a great improvement from 6th in 2001. I played 25mpg (40 minute games) and started every game.

This year, I decided to join a club. I've only played three games due to a school trip last term. Played third game yesterday. Haven't started any games yet cause we do have scoring talent on our team and coach hasn't seen me play. I got a tech for trying to kill a player- (he pissed me off earlier... chucked a ball at me head) so on the next play I ran up and tapped the ball away... it was "out" and then I started a biff.

I don't know why but I don't really feel right coming off the bench. I'm not tryin' to brag- I know I'm not the best player. I reakon I'm playin' like
T-lue (He's COOL!) cause I'm too inconsistent in scoring and playing. I'm also pretty quick and I remember when I ran the length of the court to reject a player who was half way down when I started movin' and I even heard the coach tell their players that I was fast during a timeout. I shoot like A.I. when he shoots less than 35%... It's ridiculous cause I usually start and play at least half a game. Now I play about 8 minutes out of 40.

I've noticed a big difference in my street game compared to my 'formal' ball. I mean, I can score 20-30 points cause I get the ball a hell lot and that and I also get 10 assists on any given day when I muck around. So, if anyone can tell me how to improve my game I'd be grateful!

Here's my 'profile;'

Name: Shorty
Height: 5'5'' (163.5 cm)
Weight: 57 kg
Age: 15-May-1988
Position: PG but more suited to SG
Where I play: Australia

Strenghs: Quickness and speed on court. I can also play for a hell long time wothout fatigue. Shooting range is out to half way. I can hit the open shot on a 'good' day. My friend from Houston, Texas says I got "Hops!"

Weaknesses: Too short for 2 guard, my preferred position. Can't hit fast-break lay-ups... don't know why...any tips?? I think that I might be running too fast and lose control of ball... need work on D and also need work on ball-handling. Oh yeah... I ain't flashy- I'm a crappy John Stockton.

Team Player: yes, but a bit exaggerated type... pass away open shots or under basket and shoot when I'm double-teamed or worse...try to drive over centers.
Passer/Shooter: both...I guess
Fave team and Player (All-star and include a bench/role-player): Lakers all the way and I'd say Kobe and T-lue
NBA comparrision: Tyronne Lue (off the bench, right now) but when I'm the go-to guy... I'm the self proclaimed A.I.
"Carreer" Highs: (Or what may be fave moments for me) I've had a 34 point game which is probably my best scoring game I've palyed (had 4 consecutive threes and shot about 15-23 FG% and 4-4 3-point%). I'm also proud of the time when I scored 18 points, Grabbed 11 boards and dished out 14 assists. My first Triple-double!

I'd like to hear about you other ballers... who can give me tips on improving my game and other people's games. Also about your playin' history. It's cool to hear how much you improve every season!

Yeah I play, I started playing ball for a team when I was 8, I was selected in the top 20 players born in 86 in the North of my country, I was the youngest cause I´m from 87. I dont really know my avarages but they look like this: 15ppg, 6apg, and 12 rpg in about 25 minutes of a total of 40. I posted my strengths and weaknesses somewhere in the General forum so there is no need to do that again

My last two steps when I start to pick up the ball you have to slow donw and try to go straight up on your jump, then put it low off the backboard. Works for me.

On to me, I think I've posted this somewhere before, but what the hell.

Name: Colin
Height: 5'5''
Weight: 115 lbs.
I live in Canada where metric is official, but I don't know weight/height in kg's or m's
Age: Grade 8
Position: Guard, either one
Where I Play: the basketball black hole that is Vancouver, Canada. Stupid Heisley steals our Grizzlies.

Strengths: Gets to the line (although in my last 2 games I've hit 2-8, usually I would've hit at least 6,) left hand, smart player, one of 3 players on our two school teams (total of 21 guys) that sees more than the ball and the hoop, not many TO's per game, I can stay with a player as long as he isn't absolutley blindingly quick, most fouls I ever got in a game was 3.

Weakness's: Working on strength a lot, pull-up j, more consistency from the arc, being 5'5'', quickness, rebounding (most boards I ever got was 6,) this is more of something I want to get better at, but I want to get a better vertical, right now I can only dunk on 8'5'' on a good day :(.

My style: Disciplined on the court, I would be looser but turtle tom (my coach, he looks like a turtle, name is tom, hence turtle tom) is an old geezer who takes you out of the game if you're too 'hot-doggy.' Can't stand him. On the playground though, I do so much shit.

Fav Moments: Getting 16 pts, 8 dimes, 6 boards, 3 steals, 2 blocks in 20 minutes, I woulda played more but our league has a retarded rule where if you play in the 1st you can't play in the 2nd, anything goes in the 2nd, and that turtle tom took me outta the game in the 4th cause we were kickin their asses. And our games are 4, 8 minutes quarters.

NBA Comparison: Brent Barry, Quentin Richardson when I'm on the wing and the Andre Miller of last year when I'm playing point.

hey will_K8 where do u live in australia?? im also form aust.. i live in mel and play for U18's Melbourne tigers, like the 5th team... not too bragg but i am the best player on the team, but my coach is from over seas so his style of play ins diff, and althoug im only 5'11 i try to get as bulky as i can which is hard when ur only 70kg... so the ocach puts me F which i hate co i have to get the rebound and start the fast brek where i feel more comf, to have th e lay up,

and i agree with the off the bech thing, my coach sometimes keeps me on the becnh coz he wants to have some of the not so good players play but onc they get into trouble he brings me in, but i dont have to mcuh time to warm up to the court... so i dont play as well..

In the old forum Barnsey(I think it was him anyway) started a thread asking who played ball and if they did say shaboom, so we had a thread full of the word shaboom. Why shaboom?? I have no idea :)

well since this is the basketball thread, and I do play here is my dilemma...

When a team mate (or several teammates) are dragging your team down, what do you do? We're all friends on this team but it's just not going well since we got moved up a league. I'm a quiet kind of guy on the court and, but after seeing people make the same mistakes week after week, what can I do? I realise I'm not perfect and I really didn't play that well in tonights game, but I made my mistakes when the game was well and truly over.
I've tried making jokes in reference to certain things in the hope that they will atleast get the message, but some people are like walls... atleast walls could play defence. I'm just worried that if I say something people will get upset since some of them can be sensitive. I know they don't put in the effort, and after three seasons a lot of them just don't seem to learn. On top of that one of our players just decides not to show up to random games recently. I pulled an MJ at half time and kind of had a go at the whole team... ofcourse one guy takes it personally. Fuck.
This shit is depressing, I felt like throwing up after the game. I dunno if I've ever been this close to blowing up before... :(
Sorry to dampen the mood, god basketball can be a bitch sometimes. If I blow up they'll hate me, if I try to talk to them properly they won't respond. One guy was pissed off that he played poorly so he said he was gonna go shoot around tomorrow. A guy that takes no shots, is going to go work on his jumpshot, and continue to throw no look passes and other ridiculous passes, and rack up 10 turnovers and not take a shot. Arrggg!

You should try and see if others feel the same, and have a group conversation after that. Try to make sure you have people backing you up in this situation, or you'll look like the bad guy.

just call the mall flaming faggots, then crack one in the face, do a MJ

heeheheehhehehe

on a serious note, me as a team captain, once was in a postion like this, we were down 15 at the half, and i got so pissed i practically threatened the whole team, everyone looked at me like "what the fuck are doing" but they didnt relise i take my basketball extremely seriously.
so after all of that and one younger kid crying, (i felt bad) we came back to win by 11 points.

some of the things i said were pretty mean, like our centre wouldnt go for blocks(finished with 3 or 4 :D ) and he just stood there looking like a fuckin ballerina so i got through to him.

it worked though, one question Steven, are you the captain, if you are then you really do have a right to tell ya team off, if your not, tell your captian or coach to do something.

That's good advice. I had a chat today to one of the guys, one of which does care, and does try, and generally does the right thing on the court. He's smart enough to see certain things so we're going to have a chat to the rest of our team and hopefully he backs me up. I'm still going to try and not single people out, but once I mention certain things, everybody will know if I'm talking about them. Having someone to back me up will help though.

Call the mall flaming faggots? How will that help my basketball team? Maybe someone from the Mall will be intimidated and give us free basketball gear? :D hehehe... I'd love to do an MJ but there are no short white guys on my team I could smack, only tall white/black guys. Besides we're not ready to win a championship in this league, but when we are ready, I'll punch someone to help us make that final run to the title :D

Yeah I'm sort of the unofficial captain. I'm thinking of bringing in another player, a guy who takes it just as seriously (if not more) than me. He can play, plus if people see that I brought in a guy who can really play, they might realise how important this is. Oh and also, it could help to get rid of a couple of players once the season is over, guys who I suspect really don't wanna be there and really aren't up to scratch... Harsh? Yes. I'm doing the best I can to win basketball games, and not lose friends *sigh* LOL.

Hey Steven, just read bout yo basketball dillemas.

I haven't been in that situation cause I just joined my team. But I do feel the same way cos my teammates hog the ball from each other. I guess the only way to fix it is to tell the guy wats goin on and try to help correct it.

I've only sorta experienced this at school where I play muck-around but if one of my teammates does somethin wrong I try to teach him how to do it right. For example a few days ago my friend was wastin' all his shots and since he wants to play for school I taught him how to shoot and when. After that I played point guard for the rest of the day and fed him the ball. I felt proud that I taught him how to shoot. I guess this tactic could be used in your situation too!

I'm not the best player and because of my height, I guess feeding the ball to other players may be easier for me unlike bigger dudes who try to teach thier guards how to pass sounds a bit selfish...i guess it only works for some people!

Good luck mate!
