BEHIND THE SCENES: The Preseason

Lakers coach Phil Jackson took center stage in the locker room as the Lakers faced the Charlotte Bobcats at the RBK Arena.

"OK guys this is the preseason. We will be shuffling our roster every now and then, see who's deserves to make the team. Now do not take this lightly. Sure, you guys might say, its just the preseason, and its not important. No. This is very important for each and every one of you. It gives you a slight feel to what it means to play in the NBA. It also your chance to prove to me, Mitch and the entire front office why you deserve to be on this team."

All the players nodded, understanding their coach's words and what it means.

"Remember, guys, don't think that because these are the Charlotte Bobcats, a 2nd year franchise, that they will be easy-picking for us. They are a tough team, and they can run you down any time. For this game, I want to see some defense, got that? Now, let's go out there good luck to you guys."

Von Wafer, Andrew Bynum and Devin Green looked nervous. Kwame Brown looked ready. Chris Mihm looked jittery. Kobe Bryant, looked very focused.

"Hey coach," Bryant said. "Ready for part two?"

"Sure am," Jackson said.

Welcome to another season of Lakers basketball.

BEHIND THE SCENES: The Big Change

Dr. Jerry Buss has been having this meeting since late afternoon. It is a very important one, one that can change the face of the franchise forever. Its in its closing stages right now.

“We’ve reviewed your progress here with the Lakers, and we’ve come to see that you have done a very decent job here with this team,” Buss said.
“Thank you, sir,” was the other man’s reply.
“You’ve been able to lead this team’s offense, know how to deal with players and how to get good ones. Now I know you’ve been taking all the blame for the Shaq trade.”
“Yes, Dr. Buss, it has been weighing in on me. It’s just that-”
“No, say nothing, please. Coach Phil Jackson has already had trouble with you in the past, and I do not want it to continue. Now, as I have said, you’ve done a great job leading this team, but I’m afraid that there are some current issues.”
“What sort of issues?”
“Like decisions that you have been making. You have been taking gambles the past few years and I cannot risk that. This team has already been damaged as it is. Like our game against Charlotte, even though we won, we cannot continue to have these types of games!”
“But sir, this is for the future of this team. We are building for how this franchise will look in years to come. I assure you that what I do here is very beneficial for the city of Los Angeles, its people, and this extraordinary Los Angeles Lakers franchise.”
“So, this is the lineup your going give me entering the season, which is only weeks away?”
“Positively. And we will get back to the playoffs.”
“No. I know we will, but I’m sorry, it won’t be with your help.”
“What do you mean without my help? I’m done?”
“Yes, unfortunately, you will have to leave and vacate your post. You are through with this franchsie. I’m terribly sorry, but my decision is final.”

The other man went out the door after hearing his fate. He gloomily left Dr. Buss’ office, walking past some janitors and trainers while making his way to his own office to empty out his desk.

Back in the owner’s office, Jerry Buss was a little satisfied at his decision. He took his cellphone and made a call.
“John! (referring to spokesman John Black) Call the press. We’re having a conference. Mitch’s gone.”

So just like that, the Los Angeles Lakers are without a general manger.

MITCH KUPCHAK STEPS DOWN AS LAKERS GM

EL SEGUNDO- Mitch Kupchak and the Los Angeles Lakers have come to an agreement that the two sides with part ways, it was announced in a press conference at the Toyota Training Center in El Segundo, the Lakers training facility.

“Us in the Lakers organization have come to a decision, and it has been decided that we are going to mutually part ways with Mitch Kupchak,” Dr. Jerry Buss said on the podium. “He has done a wonderful job handling this franchise, but it think this team has decided to go in a different direction.”

“I’m here today to announce my resignation as general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers,” Kupchak said. “I’ve had a wonderful time with this great franchise, back in 1981 where I was a player for this team, we experienced championships together, and then I was hired again behind Jerry West. It’s just been a great experience for me.”

Kupchak leaves after being named the team’s general manager in 2000, after Jerry West stepped down. Some of the major moves he made with the Lakers are the signing of Gary Payton and Karl Malone, the infamous Shaquille O’Neal trade, the signing of Rudy Tomjanovich, the re-signing of Kobe Bryant and most recently, the signing of Phil Jackson.

“Major moves, but somewhat risky,” Buss said. “Our search for a new general manager will begin immediately.”
