Teammate AI

Thu May 15, 2003 10:02 pm

One aspect that hasn't been mentioned specifically but I hope is improved in NBA Live 2004 is the AI of your CPU teammates.

Too often in NBA Live 2003, at all difficulty levels, I'd be frustrated with my CPU teammates, as they pick up foolish goaltending calls (just the other day, my CPU controlled KG jumped to swat a three point attempt as it approaced the rim), don't get into a good position for a final shot when I'm inbounding the ball from midcourt with 2 seconds left (and the game on the line), and are too easily beaten off the dribble/refuse to help.

Obviously, it shouldn't be made too easy, and you should have to do a fair amount of work as far as calling plays, taking shots and making smart passes. But it would help if your CPU teammates were a little more intelligent (depending on their ratings, of course).

On the subject of goaltending, did anyone else suffer the following problem in NBA Live 2003: the ball is clearly out of the imaginary "cylinder" and bounced away from the rim (off the back or away to the side), you jump to grab the rebound, but instead swat at it, picking up a bogus goaltending call?

yes.

what really annoys about the AI of my cpu teammates is when i'm on a fast break and running towards the basket al my teammates just stop at the 3point line. really pisses me of

Yeah, I've encountered that one from time to time too.

But in 2003 teammate AI is much better than in older games such 2001. In 03 fastbreak points are much easier.

Oh yeah, no question. But there's nothing wrong with further improvement.

Yep, the game is never perfect. And even if it as, we'll still find something to nag about

Too true. :) Apart from Solitaire, I don't think there's many PC games that couldn't be improved in some way.

What?!
Solitare could easily be improved. :P

Another thing i hope they improve is CPU teammate defense... in 2003 when the opponent makes a fastbreak my CPU teammates run in the wrong directions...ugh, they're fucken retards...and also...my teammates don't rebound...(but then, it's half the challenge to switch players and rebound yourself i guess).

Regarding teammate AI

Players are far too position dependant in their playing stylr and positioning and do not play like their real life counterparts , cliff robuinson is NOT a hustle inside player, he should spot up for jumpers and NOT go down low, yet in live he plays like a classic big man...
(I mean also when I play with the pistons, I can't seem to get him to move outside without controlling him directly)

And regarding opponent AI:

Why is fisher running the Lakers offence and getting tons of assists?
The Lakers offence usually goes through kobe... this appllies by the way to all teams in live, bad PG's get far to many assists beacuse the AI runs everything through them.

And kidd never rebounds like he should. :x

Also, all the stars play the same, Ray Allen and Allan Houston are great players, but their main skills are their shooting and not penetrating (as far as I know...)

Just my 2 cents

When they start to run up with me I have my finger on the alley-oop button (like that option BTW) But they stop outside the line like you said. I also don't like how sometimes I press pass, and the use the d-pad to point to the player I want to on the block, but instead I pass the ball to my teammate on the other block and the ball is taken. :x

I have had that problem, but sometimes I just get the rejection as well.

I have also had, the final shot of the buzzer from full court go in... BUT on relook of the replay, shows the ball just made it to the bottom of the net then all of asudden appeared in the ring!!!

And yeah Teamates on fast breaks stop at 3 point line and take shots... Fair enough they hit alot, BUT they could easliy go in for the dunk... One of my players was alone in the key, I passed to him he passed back out to the 3 point line where it was stolen.. He was FREE in the lane, he could have rocked the rim, pulled it to pieces he was so free... This happens all the time!!!

Yeah, that happens pretty much every game, since I play with 12 minute quarters. Part of the problem there is the game's recognition of assists - you can take a lot of time to score after receiving the pass (especially when posting up), and the passer will still be credited with an assist.

Sat May 17, 2003 1:34 pm

an assist should only happen if the player who receives the ball doesn't make a one-on-one move bigger then a cross-over or something.

I dislike the fact that the computer never relies on it's star player. Philly doens't give A.I the ball much enough, and same with Orlando. And when playing against the Spurs or the Lakers, the computa never relies on TD or Shaq. They just run through the pg and pass the ball around the arc. It's so unrealistic. I've never seen that TD or Shaq has scored over 10 points on my team.

In my most recent matchup against the Lakers, Shaq scored 6 points. Mind you, I managed to get him into foul trouble early, so he didn't get much court time. But even if I had not been able to draw the offensive fouls, he probably wouldn't have scored much - Derek Fisher was their top scorer (thanks to threes). :?

I have the same problem with Fisher. He is always ends up with 30+ points against thanks to all those 3's he hits, when in real life, he doesn't take any more than 10 shots. Cyber Fisher takes 20+ shots

yep yep, that's a big problem that should be fixed. :!:

I beat a fantasy draft Portland team with tmac and spree and Tmac took only 10 shots, made 4 (when he did get the ball Desmond played great) Spree took all the shots (and missed them) against Q.
