Piston's D suffocate Raptors

Detroit (Ticker) - The Detroit Pistons showed why they were able to get to the Finals for two straight years tonight, coming up with a 108 - 86 victory against the "rebuilding" Toronto Raptors. Detroit now improve to 3-0 on the season while Toronto falls for the first time of this young season, falling to 2-1.
The Pistons defense was suffocating. They held the Raptors to 38.7% shooting and a horrendous 13.6% from downtown, when they opened the season on 50% shooting from downtown. Most damaging to the Raptor Offense was that they were only able to muster up 13 assists, when they were averaging 33 a game coming into the game. The Raptor point guards were averaging 15.5 assists combined coming into the game. They only dished out 9 of the 13 Toronto assists.
Everything was going right for the Detroit Pistons. Chauncey Billups had a double double (22 points, 11 assists) to lead 5 Pistons to double figures. The Wallaces completely man handled the Raptors front court, combining for 24 points, 22 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. First round draft pick in the 2003 draft Darko Milicic actually got some significant playing time in the second quarter from his new head coach Flip Saunders, who scored a bucket and a board. Flip was quoted after the game, saying "This kid works hard in practice, so I'm obviously going to give him some significant playing time. It may have been short tonight, only 7 minutes, but it was in the second quarter. I thought under Larry, and no disrespect to Larry, he never really got his chance to shine and play significant minutes on the court. I put him in there in the second quarter, and to his credit, played great defense."
On the Raptors side of things, nothing was going right. They didn't move the ball, didn't get enough draw and kick plays from their point guards. Overall, they had bad night at the office. Chris Bosh put up his usual numbers, scoring 22 points and 9 boards, but only the other veterans Jalen Rose and Mo Pete seem to be in the game, each scoring 15 and 14 points respectively. A bright spot for the Raptors rookies: Charlie Villanueva collected 9 boards, but an astonishing 7 of them were on the offensive glass.
After the game, Sam Mitchell was avaliable for comment, and was quoted saying "I think when you play against a team like Detroit who went to the NBA Finals twice in the last two years, you're not going to have an easy matchup in their lineup. They have arguably the best starting five in the NBA, so it's tough. They forced us to make some costly mistakes, like forcing up shots, not moving the ball enough, but it comes with a young team like us. The rookies are going to make mistakes, so some nights, you have to live with it. We'll learn from our mistakes tonight, and we'll hopefully learn from our mistakes when we get Cleveland Monday night. "
Toronto will now host Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night.

Raptors Lose a Heartbreaker

King James scored 27 points and showed off the Cavaliers new uniforms in the win.
Toronto (CP) - The Raptors lost a heartbreaking loss on their home floor to the reloaded Cleveland Cavaliers despite a career high 36 points from rising star Chris Bosh. Cleveland superstar LeBron James countered with 27 points and grabbed 6 boards to lead the Cavaliers to a two point victory.
The Raptors actually had the last possession, but were not able to take advantage of the situation. Chris Bosh was in the post, but his turnaround hook hit two rims, but didn't fall as the buzzer sounded. Despite 36 points and 9 boards from CB4, he did not hit the most crucial shot of the ball game for the Raptors, and it resulted in a loss.
Although LeBron was the star for Cleveland tonight, it was former Raptor Donyell Marshall that came threw in the clutch in the final frame. Marshall in the ball game only had 6 points nad 5 boards, but hit an elbow jumper with 30 seconds left in the ball game to put Cleveland up for good. Before the game, Marshall was honored by the Raptors, who gave him the game ball in the game where he hit an NBA record 12 3 pointers in a game (record shared by Kobe Bryant).
After the game, Raptors coach Sam Mitchell was avaliable for comment. "We could've sent the game to overtime. We did well in the game, out rebounding the Cavaliers, but we just did execute our offense the way we'd like to. That hook shot by CB4 was halfway in, but it popped out. Sometimes, you just get unlucky. We have a few days off until the Jazz game, so we have to work on our shooting. We were an awful 4-22 from downtown tonight, which is not good for a team like us that rely on the outside game most of the time." Mitchell also commented on the rookies. "I thought the rooks did well tonight. Charlie had a double double, Graham was great on defense for us, and Jose got everyone invovled." The press also caught up with Donyell Marshall. "It was fun coming back to Toronto and playing here. I miss the fun times here, but the organization made a decision not to resign me, and that was their decision. Cleveland's my team now, and I'm going to give them 110% every night."
Toronto will now try to redeem themselves on Friday when they host the Jazz.

It's always disappointing to lose by one or two points and know that you could hav tied/win the game. You'll do better next game though, I just hope the Raptors don't fall below .500.

Raptors Roared Past the Jazz

Chris Bosh and company told the Jazz to get out of the house
Toronto (CP) - After dropping down back to .500 after winning their first two games of the season, the Toronto Raptors regained their composure and blew the Jazz out of the Air Canada Centre, led by the 25 points and 11 rebounds by Chris Bosh, registering his second double double of the young season.
The Jazz were lead by the 19 points of Deron Williams, who was breaking down the defense in the first half with his agressive drives to the bucket, but threw out the game, he failed to dish out any dimes to his teammates due to the defense of the Raptors. Andrei Kirlenko had 11 points in the first half, but was only able to muster up 5 in the second half, finishing with a respectable 16 points and 8 boards. Carlos Boozer had a decent night as well, finishing with 17 points and 9 boards, but the struggling Jazz were just not able to match the intensity of the Raptors, who now fall to 1-5 on the year.
On the Raptors side, they got a big lift from their bench, who scored 41 of the Raptors 101 points. They got a big lift from Mo Pete, who had 17 and Charlie V, who put up a double double on the score sheet, with 14 points 10 boards and 3 blocked shots. Charlie also hit his first 3 pointer of the season, showing the versatility of the rookie bigman. Another story of the game was the play of Rafael Araujo. Sam Mitchell decided to start Araujo instead of Woods due to the size of Greg Ostertag. In the first four games, he put up 8 points in total. Tonight, he scored 8 points and grabbed 6 boards in just 18 minutes of play. He stood his ground when Ostertag tried to box him out, get position downlow and played great defense overall. He has shown definite improvement and worked hard on his game in the offseason.
The media caught up with Sam Mitchell and he said "I thought Hoffa came out and did great. He played real good position on Greg and stood his ground against the veteran." Sam also praised his team for great defense down the stretch. "In the first half, we gave up 50 points and 30 points in the first quarter. In the second half, we only allowed them to get 36 points in the second half. Our defense down the stretch was great and we outrebounded 50 to 35. We came into the game averaging 37.5 boards a game, so I think I got the message through at practice the four days we didn't have a game." Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan was not happy at all with his team. He was quoted saying, "We didnt execute our offense down the stretch, and just did a really pour job rebounding the ball. Our front court got 25 rebounds in the game, but the rest of the team and the bench couuld only get 10 boards combined. You just can't win a ball game like that."
Toronto looks to extend their winning streak on Sunday when they host the Seattle SuperSonics.

yah..it was a tough loss, the ball hit lk 2 rims before it bounced out. I didn't have time to intentional foul. Actually, I didn't even know what button that was at the time, because I hardly intentional foul

Raptors Drop to the Sonics in a close contest

Rashard and Ray combined for 56 points to beat the Raptors
Toronto (CP) - It was another tough afternoon at the Air Canada Center for Raptor fans, having gone through heartbreaking losses just 6 days ago. On Sunday afternoon, the Seattle SuperSonics strolled into the ACC and stole a 107 - 104 victory against the Raptors. Ridnour, Lewis and Allen combined for 65 points and 13 assists for the Sonics.
The Raptors knew coming into this game that this was not going to be an easy one. A team that won 50 + games with the same core has a lot of talent. A team with a 1-2 punch of Lewis and Allen is going to be deadly, and they showed that. Down the stretch, the two All-Stars came through in the clutch for the Sonics. Allen stole the ball from Jalen Rose, got down the court and dished it to Rashard for the slam, making it 107 - 102 Sonics, putting them up for good and put the dagger in the Raptor's hearts.
The Raptors had a chance to completely seal the deal with a Rose 3 ball, who was wide open. The veteran from Michigan, however, was unable to hit the three ball, and ended up 4 for 13 from the field and 0 for 6 from downtown. He ended up with 8 points and 4 assists. He also commited his only but costly turnover with 35 seconds to go, leading to the fast break dunk by Lewis. The former Fab Fiver said after the game "I blame this loss on Jalen Rose. We could've put the ball game if I made that three. If I made that three, they wouldn't have made that run and push us back to .500 again."
There were several bright spots for the Raptors though. Chris Bosh was one rebounded shy of a double double to go along with 22 points. Joey Graham had his finest game of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing two boards. He had an awesome dunk from the baseline, which got the crowd to their feet, turning Nick Collison into a poster along the way. Charlie V. was his usual self, posting his third straight double double with 14 points and 11 boards, 6 of wich were on the offensive glass. He leads the team in rebounded with 9.2 boards a game despite coming off the bench. Sophomore Rafael Araujo had his second straight start in place of Loren Woods and posted another strong performance with 8 points and 5 boards. Mo Pete also had a season high 19 points off the bench.
Raptors will try to win redeem themselves and hopefully not fall below .500 when they play a back to back with Philadelphia (away, then home).

There were several bright spots for the Raptors though. Chris Bosh was one rebounded shy of a double double to go along with 22 points. Joey Graham had his finest game of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing two boards. He had an awesome dunk from the baseline, which got the crowd to their feet, turning Nick Collison into a poster along the way. Charlie V. was his usual self, posting his third straight double double with 14 points and 11 boards, 6 of wich were on the offensive glass. He leads the team in rebounded with 9.2 boards a game despite coming off the bench. Sophomore Rafael Araujo had his second straight start in place of Loren Woods and posted another strong performance with 8 points and 5 boards. Mo Pete also had a season high 19 points off the bench.
Raptors will try to win redeem themselves and hopefully not fall below .500 when they play a back to back with Philadelphia (away, then home).

I play that exact lineup in the 4th quarter, but I lk Mo and Charlie coming off the bench. They give me a real boost.
