Latrell Sprewell Picked Up?
Are the rumours true that LA has signed Spree? Or are they also on a shopping spree?

Image
ABOVE: Latrell Sprewell (8) could have helped Minnesota
if he hadn't spent his time complaining about his contract

19 Nov, Orange County (AP) - Rumour has it that the 2-2 LA Lakers have been engaging in talks with various free agents who could fill voids for the team and bring depth to its rotation. It has been reported today by a handful of Los Angeles radio stations that the team has indeed succeeded in luring one of the Lakers' free agent prospects.

Out of a shortlist of former NBA PF Dennis Rodman, former Laker J.R. Rider and G/F Latrell Sprewell, it has been reported that it was the 35 year old guard/forward who has won an offer from the Lakers. After being rejected by a few teams in the league, Sprewell recently restated what he would take up as an offer and what he would be able to give to a team who picks him up.

"I was foolish to ask for too much money and I really honestly believe that if I was to wait till the All-star break to be signed to a desperate team would be a waste of time for me," He said in an exclusive interview with ESPN, "If I sign with a team now, I think that I'll have more of a chance to raise my stock even more for next season and I will get to contribute to a team rather than sit on the bench for a contender."

Sprewell extrapolated, "I believe I can bring immediate scoring to any team's bench or starting lineup. I can be the second man behind the main guy. I'm versatile and believe in my abilities to help a team win."

Sprewell's agent Bob Gist told a Denver newspaper that his client wanted to play for the Denver Nuggets because he would fill up the shooting guard rotation which is looking very thin. He also said he would like to consider jobs with the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks. Gist added, "For the the right ammount of money and court time, he (Sprewell) should sign with any team."

The Lakers' Will Sit responed to the sudden rumours of Sprewell signing with the team and said that they were not true although he did admit that the Lakers have been contacted by Sprewell in the last three months. "I won't say when but it is true that he has been interested in our franchise before. He wants to play alongside Kobe (Bryant) and play for Phil Jackson."

Sit also hinted that the Lakers may well bring in a few free agents by mid-season. "Anything can happen and we're (Lakers) looking at making adjustments."

G/F Sprewell averaged 13 ppg, 3 rpg and 2 apg for the Timberwolves last season and was part of the reason why the Wolves didn't play to expectations and live up to the hype just one season after reaching the Western Conference Finals. Sprewell has reestablished himself as a team cancer after last season.

haha team cancer..

anyway, if you do get him, you really have to figure out a way to include him into the team's chemistry...bcoz, as you said, he re-established himself as the team cancer and with him playing his ballhogging ways can really destory your team...

Sprewell (even though he's a cancer) does provide nice scoring and most likely provide good scoring off the bench (liek in my dynasty)

So signing Sprewell might not be that bad (Y)

Spree signing with the Lakers now would kinda make sense especially with that story of yours. Don't know how he'll work with Kobe though. Rodman in the Lakers again would be fun too

I think Spree would make a good addition to the team, considering the fact that his attitude isn't a factor anymore.

Wow Sprewell...that's a toughie, I'll have to see how things pan out there...but knowing how season Sit is...he'll straighten that dude out...I just hope that GM Sit has enough sandwiches in the locker room because Spree's gotta feed his family!

Lakers Defense Stifles Opponents
Balanced scoring and team defense is the perfect formula to winning?

Image
ABOVE: Kobe Bryant (8) soars to the hoop to score 2 of his 25 points

22 Nov, Los Angeles – Hornets PG Chris Paul said his team was dominated on both sides of the court. Phil Jackson called it the best game he has coached in, in two and a half years. General Manager Will Sit said the STAPLES Center tacos never tasted better as the LA Lakers led from the start to the end in a 22 point thumping of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets.

The NBA’s glamour franchise seemed to have found their rhythm and comfort zone as they outplayed the younger side led by Wake Forest product Chris Paul and sophomore star JR Smith. Paul was impressive finishing with a hard earned 23 points as he was hounded by the opposition on defense. Paul’s attitude lifted the spirit of his teammates as they fought to fight back throughout the entire match.

JR Smith had a rough night after sustaining a back injury in the second quarter and later coming back on in the fourth period. The high-flying SG put up 15 points, 3 boards and 4 dimes in just 30 minutes of action. Desmond Mason covered up for his compatriot and added 11 points on 4 for 9 shooting but that was about it for the Hornets who had limited help from anyone else on their team.

“We (Hornets) just couldn’t get ourselves going. This was a tough game because we played a very tough team tonight,” Coach Byron Scott said, “What really surprised me was how good LA was though. They handled us very well and do look like a dangerous team. It will be interesting to see how they fare this season.”

Lakers head coach Phil Jackson praised Chris Paul for his leadership on the court, “I’ve never seen him (Paul) play before but for the first time I did and I came away impressed. He reminds me of Isaiah Thomas actually. That’s pretty impressive and he is impressive. He’s got flair and a passion for the game. You can see it in him when he plays.”

Jackson’s own superstar Kobe Bryant scored 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. However, it was Lamar Odom who stole the show as he posted a ‘Scottie Pippen-like’ performance. Odom finished with 26, 8 and 7. He added one steal and shot very well from the field and limited the Hornets’ forwards from making nay impact in the match.

“Lamar has been playing great basketball for us,” Captain Kobe Bryant stated, “I think he might make the All-Star team this year. It will be great to have two Lakers on that team this year!”

Kwame Brown once again posted a very quiet double double of 14 and 12 while his defensive skills in the post were once again ignored by spectators. The 6’11” C held PJ Brown down in the paint and limited the veteran to just one shot attempt. The former number one draft pick is quickly living up to potential in the city of angels.

The game started slowly and was very physical as the away side fouled a lot in the opening minutes. Luke Walton scored a surprising 12 points thanks to the opposing team’s physical play. “Luke was sent to the line a lot tonight,” Assistant Coach Brian Shaw said, “He made his shots and that’s why we won. We didn’t let the Hornets get to our heads.”

LA took an early lead after the first quarter and the game started to heat up even if New Orleans wasn’t getting any closer to the Lakers. Paul started to step up on the floor after hitting back to back treys and then forcing Odom into a tough lay up which went out of bounds. New Orleans continued to frustrate LA into turnovers and slowly, the Lakers started to lose control of the pace of the game.

“The Hornets did well to dictate the flow of the game,” Odom said, “We were lucky to keep our lead.”

The officiating started to get scrappy by the end of the first half with unnecessary physical contact not being told off by the refs. Tensions rose after the break with Walton hitting Desmond Mason hard as the Hornets’ sixth man drove to the hoop. Mason retaliated by throwing the ball at Walton and the two tangled on the court before other players separated them.

Mason said of Walton, “Hitting me with the ball was uncalled for.”

It was surprising that neither player was called for a technical but after the following time out, it seemed that the game went back to normal as the Lakers solidified their defensive game and started to control the game once again.

Once the fourth quarter started, New Orleans made a small run and hit back at the Lakers’ lead. Bryant was frustrated as Chris Paul continually drove into the lane for a lay up but after an Odom three point play, the home side was hyped up once more. Tyronn Lue went on a tear as he single-handily put the Lakers back on top with two lay ups and a wide open three point bucket to put LA up by 18 with just 2:01 remaining.

Kobe Bryant was impressed with the home crowd, “These guys (Crowd) really made us feel good about playing in here (STAPLES Center). You can feel the energy in this building.” The All Star guard also stated that he hoped his team could sustain the momentum they were riding on to produce high quality basketball, like last night’s, for the rest of the season.

Notes

F/G Latrell Sprewell was signed two days ago but couldn’t arrive in LA on time for the last night’s game…SG Kobe Bryant scored less than 30 points for the first time last night … SG JR Smith was cleared by Hornets’ medical staff after the game and will attend team training tomorrow… Record: 3-2 (2-0) (1-2) …

Great blown out win against the Hornets. As for the Spree thing, you gotta sign Spree, he will provide a spark off the bench since Kobe and Odom are scoring the majority of the points. Spree will relieve the pressures of Kobe and Odom. He is a good sixth man.

Good job against the Hornets, they never outscored you in any quarter and you pulled away in the fourth. I think you should try to adjust your sliders because your turnovers seem a bit too high.
