One-On-One: Tayshaun Prince
Tayshaun Prince will enjoy his fourth season in the NBA. A native of Compton, Calif., the 6-9 forward from Dominguez High went on to play his college ball under Tubby Smith at Kentucky before emerging as the first Pistons rookie to start in a playoff game since Joe Dumars did in 1986. His averages in points, rebounds and assists have increased in each of his first three seasons. The Pistons play the most back-to-back games in the NBA and the schedule does not allow for much leisure between practice, games and travel. Pistons.com sat down with Prince to find out if his bags stay packed and which cities he enjoys traveling to in this one-on-one exclusive.
You had a little break in the schedule recently. What did you do with all of your free time?
I didn’t do much. I went down to Kentucky to watch the (Florida at Kentucky) game.
Do anything exciting for the Super Bowl?
I just watched it at the house. I had some family in town.
Detroit plays the most back-to-back games in the NBA year in and year out. You’re constantly traveling day-to day, week-by-week. Do your bags stayed packed?
Your bags do stay packed. You change a couple of things, but hopefully your wife, fiancée or whomever are able to help clean clothes for you and do that stuff, because, you know, you we’re at practice and our turnarounds are so fast sometimes, so my bags stays 80% packed.
What keeps you occupied on the plane?
We play card games, dominos. Guys bring their iPods, CD players, DVD players or walkmans.
You look forward to going to warm-climate cities this time of year?
Oh yeah. It’s definitely been one of the worst winters since I have been here. I think everybody is waiting to get somewhere warm.
Are you disappointed you might be there just for one night?
No. We still enjoy that little time even though it goes by real fast. Trust me, we still enjoy it.
Do you look at the schedule and plan accordingly or do you just play it week-by-week?
I’d say week-by-week. I look at the next three games.
How has the road been since winning the NBA title?
It’s been a little different as far as us being the champs and people recognizing us a lot more, but it hasn’t been too much of a difference. We do stick to our routines. A lot of us hang out together. Not that much different.
What NBA cities do you enjoy visiting?
Obviously anywhere with warm weather, but Miami, of course L.A. I know a lot guys like going to Chicago, Orlando because it is warm. A lot of people like going to New York too. Those would be the most common ones.
Do you have any least favorite places?
Yes, I do have some least favorites. Utah, there’s not really much to do there. Usually when we go to Seattle, it’s raining all of the time. We really don’t get a chance to do anything down there.
Do you stick to the same routine on the road, catching the same restaurants, or are you the type to try something new?
It depends. If we are somewhere where there’s a restaurant that is not in Detroit, then I would catch it every time we go there. But if we’re in a city that doesn’t have common restaurants, I think that’s the opportune time to try something new.
You mentioned you were able to go back and see Kentucky play recently. They have been playing well this season. What do you think of their chances as we get closer to March Madness?
Their chances are very good. They’re a very young team. They have a lot of learning to do. They lost two games this year to North Carolina and Kansas and I think by far North Carolina pretty much has the most talent in college basketball this year, so I am pretty sure they will be the favorite, but you know how March Madness is, anything can happen, but definitely, UK has a great chance.
With your hectic NBA schedule, are you able to catch any of Kentucky’s games?
I catch all of them, because if I don’t watch it live, I TiVo it.
Speaking of your alma mater, do you speak with you college coach Tubby Smith?
On occasion, like once or twice a month.
What do you guys discuss?
Nothing much. How things are going on my end, how things are going on his end.
How about your teachers and coaches at Dominguez High School in Compton, CA?
I always talk to my high school coach. He still coaches at the same high school, but not only that, we had a friendship even before I got to high school, and so I definitely talk to him a lot. Couple favorite teachers that I had in high school, they passed away. I did keep in touch with them during college, but they passed away recently, so my high school coach is the only one I really keep in touch with.
Does he come out to the games in Los Angeles?
Yeah.
It has to be nice to get home on occasion?
There are good things and bad things about going home. It’s tough trying to get all of those tickets for your family to get to the game. It’s definitely a good experience to get back home and see the family though.

Leandro Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns hit five free throws in the final 13 seconds of the game to seal a 70-64 win over the Detroit Pistons.
Junior Harrington hit a three pointer with 34 seconds to cut the lead to one at 64-65. Barbosa hit two free throws with 13 seconds left to push the lead back to three and Alex Acker missed a game tying three with five seconds left. Barbosa pushed the lead to six with three free throws thereafter.
Barbosa led all scorers with 19 points on five of 13 shooting. He also chipped in three rebounds and three assists. Dijon Thompson (5-9 FG) and Brandon Kurtz (2-7 FG, 7-8 FT) each had 11 points a piece for the Suns.
The Suns finished the game shooting 41 percent (23-56 FG), while the Pistons also shot 41 percent (24-58 FG). The Suns out-rebounded the Pistons 39-36, led by Kurtz’s seven boards.
Acker (6-11 FG) and Jason Maxiell (6-10 FG) led the Pistons in scoring with 16 a piece. Darko Milicic had seven points (2-7 FG) and five rebounds for the Pistons.
The Suns took a 32-30 lead at the break with both teams struggling from the field. Phoenix shot 40 percent (10-25 FG), while Detroit shot 38 percent (11-29 FG). Acker led all first half scorers with nine points on three of five shooting.

- Pistons 2005 draft picks Jason Maxiell and Alex Acker led the Pistons in Game 1 of summer league scoring 16 points each
- Darko Milicic scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked three shots.
- There was a familiar jersey on the court for the Pistons: #1 Billups ... The Billups inside the uniform was not Chauncey, but rather Rodney Billups... Chauncey's younger brother. He led the University of Denver to the NIT last season.
- Andreas Glyniadakis, Pistons second round draft choice in 2003, is rehabing a broken left hand he suffered while playing in Europe and will not be competing in games during the summer league. He has been cleared by doctors to do non-contact work during practices.

I'm hoping the Summer League is original this time. I'm sorry but all the ripped off articles from the Pistons website is kind of a no no. You need to put some original stuff in here. This is supposed to be your dynasty not a mirror of the Pistons site
