And believe me, if he did give a million bucks (or a considerably smaller sum), we would know about it. BTW, I'm thinking about giving 12.456.212,00$ to the poor children of Turkmenistan. If I say this on a national televison and cry while doing so - will I go to heaven?

I really can't argue with you guys giving arguments how Marbury isn't really a loser, how he just had bad luck and that sort of things. But in the of the day, he's still a loser. And if you're a top level athlete, doesn't mean that you have to have a complete lack of objectivness.

i don't like marbury, and that's not because of his trash talk. trash talking is a part of the game, i really like it. but starbury makes me sick just looking at him, he is the kind of person who is always trying to be something, always trying to tell people (and himself) he is something that he is not.

he forced his way out of minnesota so he could prove he deserved as much as KG leading another team to the playoffs and being a floor general, but he underachieved. i can only wish him a better luck next time he gets traded (cause he will get nowhere playing for the knicks).

Why would you think he is selfish? Because he's never been in the right situation to REALLY win? (People tend to forget the year that the Suns gave the Spurs a good run in the first round when Amare and Marion weren't the type of impact payers they are now)

Yeah he has totally underachieved in comparison to KG. Garnett has been out of the first round once and Stephon hasnt. I guess thats the be all and end all of sucess these days...

Anyone with half a brain would understand that announcing to the global media that you're thinking about donating $1 million to a charity would mean people want to know if it actually happens. With the size of Marbury's head, I'm assuming he has more than half a brain. Look at it this way, when people started talking about the whole interview it was "He cried!" then it was "Stephon's such a great guy, he's going to donate a million dollars!". It was a ridiculous thing to say, but I'm assuming he got caught up in the moment or something.

I can see the point you're making Jae. I just don't agree with it. Someone can genuinely feel bad for a situation without making a donation. And we dont even know that he didnt.. we just know that he was thinking about it. Since when is that such a big crime? That he cried on tv. I swear, some people are hated like no other.

Michael Jordan cried in 91, 96 and 98 after winning the championship. Same with shaq in 2000. Nobody dared to criticise them for that.

Stephon cries when thousands of people die and are in a desperate situation and he cops it for that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with him crying on TV at all, I credit him for it if anything... he has to be aware of the amount of hate he gets from people, so it would take a fair bit of courage to put himself out there.

Personally I think alot of guys in the NBA are overly, and unnecessarily critisised... even someone like Antoine Walker, I mean how many people can go into the NBA and average 20 a game? But of course he sucks, takes too many shots, is too selfish, team cancer etc.

I agree, but isn't that similar to the stance of Australia/the Australian government, which you criticised? I mean, if what we did was something to be ashamed of, surely pledging or suggesting financial aid then not following through is hardly any more of a noble gesture.

True, but part of the fun of being a sports fan is being an armchair analyst. I think the problem is people make the criticisms too personal or get too personally involved in the sport to the extent that they get offended or upset by things that weren't actually done to them, nor destory their life in the grand scheme of things.

But I suppose we all have our ideals when it comes to how basketball should be played and we hate to see anything happen to our favourite team or players having an adverse effect on the game. We hold athletes in such reverence that anyone who is talented but doesn't conform to a certain ideal tends to be treated as though they're committing some great injustice. Understandable even if it is unjustified and something we've probably all been guilty of at some level, at some point.

No, its different. The australian government gave indoesia $1000 000 000 000 for the tsunami, and gave america $10 million. Now I know the US is a world power, but they are (with the exception of new zealand) our closest friends and we almost turned our backs on them.

Our covergae of the situation also pissed me off. Instead of presenting the facts, it only seemed to be a "lets bash america" fest. Its a shame when people use disasters as a way to gain political leverage.

Where it varies with Stephon is his is a personal donation. It's none of mine, yours or anyone else's business. We dont know if he made the donation, and we cant form hate or criticise him simply becuase he cried or because some people assume he didnt.

I think it's already been mentioned in this thread, but he wouldn't accept a 100 million contract or something and took 120. Screwing over the team for a while and keeping them in the first round.

Very true, as much as I like KG it is a part of his career that's generally glossed over these days though I remember him copping some flak for it while it was all going on. I suppose the difference is that Marbury is more brash, more cocky, which tends to rub people the wrong way and makes it easier to portray him as villan.
