CLEVELAND, September 17 - The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed forward/center Alan Henderson to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Alan is a proven veteran with playoff experience who will be a valuable asset to us on the floor and in the locker room,” Ferry said. “He can give us toughness and depth in the post.”
Henderson, 32, spent last season with the Dallas Mavericks after spending nine seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. In 78 games (10 starts) in Dallas, he averaged 3.5 points on a career-high .527 shooting from the floor and 4.5 rebounds in 15.4 minutes per game. During his career he has played in 563 games (212 starts) with averages of 8.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in 22.8 minutes per game.
“I’m happy to be here,” Henderson said. “I’m excited to work with the players, the coaches and the whole organization. Cleveland made some great moves this summer and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Henderson, 6-9, 240 pounds, has played in 34 career playoff games (four starts) including nine games with the Mavericks last season. For his career, he is averaging 5.3 points and 2.9 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per game in the postseason. He was the recipient of the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award in 1997-98 after averaging a career-high 14.3 points to go along with 6.4 rebounds in 69 games (33 starts) with the Hawks.
“Alan has shown throughout his career the ability to be active on the glass and on the defensive end,” Cavaliers’ Head Coach Mike Brown said. “He provides us with a solid interior presence and will help fortify our frontcourt rotation.”
