People, don't overatte Hughes on defense, he's really not that good a man to man defender. He was average, at times good depending on the matchup, sometimes bad, but he was not a great man to man defender at all. He's good at getting steals though, the Wizards matador defense definately starts with him and Arenas.

If they drive they kill him, check Richard Jefferson, Carter in 03-04 when Ben was out, etc..], Baron Davis [when healthy], PJ Brown, James Posey [when healthy], Larry Hughes, Manu Ginobili, Andre Miller.

Kevin Garnett is a stud defensively, which is why he is top 4-5 in the league for sure.

Chris Webber, Grant Hill and KG have all noted that Cliff Robinson is the best defender! (they said this in 2000)

Yes, he's great man to man, but he's also a terrible rebounder, which doesn't help his team because when he's on the floor his team also gives up a lot more offensive rebounds. Why do you think Dampier averaged 12 RPG before he got his contract, or Ben 15 RPG in I think 01-02, it's because they were playing next to Cliff "no rebound" Robinson.

I just remembered Elton Brand and Jermaine O'neal, they seem to be a little underatted defensively at times, are both very good ones.

You're kidding right? Theo Ratliff is one of the worst defensive bigmen in the league. Just because you're a shot blocker doesn't at all mean that you're a good defender. He is the easiest guy in the league to post up, he doesn't put a body on you in the post, he just jumps and puts up his hands. Theo is widely considered a TERRIBLE defensive player.

i don't mean ratliff is the best or anything, but you have to give him some credits. he played really good two years ago but last year he wasn't the same person. i know injury has something to do with that too. if you live in portland you would know that ratliff mentioned that "HE IS REALLY FRUSTRATED BY HIS TEAMMATES NOT PLAYING "D", SO HE HAS TO COVER UP FOR THEM." specificly zach randolph!

03-04 - All-Defensive 2nd team center
02-03 - Lost to Shaq and Ben, but was the 3rd center in All-Defensive selections, 1 1st team vote, and 6 second
01-02 - Played 3 games
00-01 - Only played 50 of 82 games, and was the 4th center after Mutombo, Shaq, and David Robinson, 2 first team votes, and 5 second team
99-00 - Only played 57 of 82 games, 3 first team votes as a F, 3 second team votes
98-99 - Played all 50 games, NBA Defensive 2nd team as a F, beat by Pippen, Malone and Duncan for first team, and PJ Brown had one more point

Before this, he wasn't really known for much yet, so he wasn't getting votes. You can see that the both years he was healthy, he made the 2nd team, and in the partially healthy years, he got a good amount of votes. When you're a C, their's 2 spots for All-Defensive teams, and as a F, 4 spots. In the 2 years as a center, he was basically rated the 3rd and 4th best defensive center by the coaches, and one year he missed 25 games. As a forward in 99-00, he got 3 first and second team votes against Duncan, KG, Pippen, and Cliff. He was also beat by Malone and PJ Brown, that's not a dissapointment by any means considering he missed 32 games.

Basically every year he was rated as one of the best defensive big men by the coaches who are the one that pick All-Defensive team players.

Great weak side defender

Yes, he's a good weak side defender, but he's awful at defending the strong side. One of the reasons is because he gambles far too much to try and block shots. He leaves his man to try and block shots, and he's not nearly strong enough to defend downlow. I'd rather have a guy like Reggie Evans then Theo Ratliff any day.

Reggie Evans? Evans can't block shots, and while decently strong is undersized at 6'8 [though with a 7'2] against most PF's. He's an average man to man defender, but he does take pride and put a lot of effort into the area, and he's a great rebounder, he's not really any better than Ratliff. They both give different things, Ratliff can change games with his shot blocking, while Evans with his rebounding.

In the end, who you'd rather have does not make Theo a lesser defender. He's a good one, not just because he block shots, but because he's also good man to man, even the coaches recognize that.
