well rap is really like hardcore with tons of sursis

Example- Ying Yang twins, eminem, d12, bizarre, the game

hip hop is less hardcore and more in the pop area

Example- nelly, bow wow, will smith, pretty ricky, llcool j, ja rule

and hip hop sometimes falls in to r&b

hop it helps

Image What a bad definition.

The biggest difference is that hip-hop is more of a culture. A good amount of rappers/fans think/thought of the 4 elements which constitute the culture:

    MCing
    DJing
    Graffiti
    B-Boying

Rap is basically considered MCing which in other words, some classify as hip-hop. It's all basically the same thing.

You should not have a rap forum with a definition like that. It is what XianeX said, hip-hop = culture, rap = part of the culture.

Lol @ Rob Thomas...

I just bought a 3CD box set called "All That Alternative"... here are some of the bands on it...

The Smiths
Faith No More
Happy Monday's
Violent Femmes
The Von Bondies
New Order
Janes Addiction
Devo
The Flaming Lips
Shihad
OPM
Magic Dirt

Just download something from a couple of those and you'll get an idea of what alternative is. The three bands you listed are more pop-toned.

CAN I TOUCH YOUR BOUNTIFUL D-CUPS???

Sorry, I hadn't made any jokes about it yet. I'm not going to rant about it but, don't base that desicion on hip-hop on 50 Cent, Chingy, and a lot of that commercial, run-of-the-mill garbage.

Hip Hop isnt only music, it is everything from the clothes you wear to the way you act, to the things you say, to the way you live, and things you do in life. Hip hop can be basketball, being a gangsta, any other sport, graffiti, DJing, BBoying(do people still do that). The common thread though between all those things though, is that it is usually urban in some way or another, or black. Rap is just another kind of music in hip hop, just like R&B, Jazz, Gospel, or any other kind of music that rampent in inner city area amongst urban youths. It can range from rock to whatever. By the way if anyone wonder im black, not that its important or anythng.

The Smiths and New Order on the same CD? A CD supposedly trying to capture a whole genre. That's really wierd.

It's a 3 CD set. Each CD has a different vibe to it.
