Asdf's Denver Dynasty: Report Card + Celtics Recap

Postby Its_asdf on Tue Aug 23, 2005 7:09 am

Ok, since my live 2005 is no where to be seen and I'll be pretty bored and until EA comes out with '06, so I guess I'll just start this dynasty for fun. Denver is probably my third favourite team behind Toronto and Memphis, so I'll probably have more fun with this than rotting away during the summer.

Denver's Training Camp

Image
Big men Kenyon Martin (left), Marcus Camby (middle) and Francisco Elson (right), have all worked tirelessly throughout training camp.

After nearly a two month layoff, the Denver Nuggets were ready to hit the gym and begin their training camp. George Karl's aim for this year's training camp was to focus on building up more strength in areas that the Nuggets needed improvement on during last season. Although the team does not have any glaring weaknesses on defence and rebounding, the team has played some imrpoved defence under new heard coach George Karl, and it would still be one of Karl's main tasks to emphasize and stress team defence and playing as a group. A glaring weakness that was also evident during last season was Denver's inability to hit perimeter jump shots. Coach Karl understands this and says this will also be another one of the main focuses of training camp.

"We'd usually let teams back into the game or let a game slip by us because of our lack of perimeter shooting," said Karl. "We've got a few jump shooting veterans on this team, but we're not a jumpshooting team, and I think with this current group of guys we'll be struggling against a zone. What I'm trying to do right now is to get the players to learn some more plays that can help free up our guys and allow us to have a more effective offence against any type of zone that is thrown against us."

Image
Denver's future star Carmelo Anthony is working hard on improving his freethrow shooting.

The biggest question that looms over George Karl's head is not particularly about defence or outside shooting, but the starting guard at the two spot. The whole starting lineup is pretty much solidified; blocking machine Marcus Camby will be starting at center, budding stars Kenyon Martin and Carmelo Anthony will be manning the foward positions up front, and the point duties will be handled by the reliable veteran Andre Miller. Dermarr Johnson, Voshon Lenard, and Wesley Person are all very promising candidates that are currently using these few weeks as a time to battle it out for the starting spot.

Dermarr Johnson is the youngest and most talented of the trio. He has a very lanky and athletic Tayshaun Prince-like 6'9 frame, and this allows Dermarr to explode to the basket for some pretty athletic dunks. Johnson's ballhandling skills are also clearly just as good, if not better, than the other two players. However, the team's biggest need in the starting lineup is a jumpshooter, and Dermarr's consistency from outside is clearly giving the coach some doubts. Voshon Lenard is probably the leading candidate for the starting spot. He brings the three point shooting that the Nuggets so sorely need, but Lenard does not have much of anything else in his game and he can be pretty one-dimensional. Lenard's biggest problem would also be that he went through a long period of time without playing basketball thanks to an injury last season, so he must also quickly get back into shape because his weight had ballooned substantially. This might make Karl consider Wesley Person, but Person is clearly not the player he used to be and is showing signs of slowing down from old age and is looking to be nothing more than a role player at best.

Image
Dermarr Johnson was working on all facets of his game to earn a starting spot; even his post up game!

"To tell you the truth, I honestly don't know," said Karl. "They are all very good players, and all three of them have their strengths and weaknesses. I'm thinking about Voshon Lenard later in the season because if we spoon-feed him too many minutes than he might not be that effective because he still needs to get back into shape and get re-acquainted with shooting the basketball. If I can't decide by the end of training camp and if it comes down to it, I can always just let one player start for a few games and let the other one start for a few games, and judging by how well they play together with the starting lineup, we'll choose our starter."

San Antonio Spurs vs. Denver Nuggets

Starting Lineups

Image

Key Match-up
Tim Duncan vs. Kenyon Martin:

Tim Duncan is always an MVP candidate and has the consistency to drop 20 points and 10 rebounds on a nightly basis while also playing exceptionally sound defence. The fundamentally sound Duncan will have to face off against Kenyon Martin, who is one of the top defensive power fowards in the league. Both player's game differ drastically from each other; Tim Duncan is a foundamentally sound 7'0 big man who could easily shoot over Martin, while Kenyon is at a smaller 6'9, but has the explosiveness, strength and quickness to make him a very dangerous offensive threat. If Kenyon is going to slow Duncan down, he'll have to make Tim Duncan work at both ends of the court and use his explosiveness to try and get by Duncan.

Spurs Destroy Denver (100-85 Spurs*)

Nuggets Boxscore
Spurs Boxscore

The Denver Nuggets failed to impress the home crowd as they were ironically beaten by the team that also gave the Nuggets their first round exit last season. San Antonio shot a scorching 52% from the field and nearly outplayed Denver at every category. Tony Parker led the Spurs attack with 20 points and added 8 assists with no turnovers. Manu Ginobili and Bruce Bowen (suprisingly) also finished with 20 points each. Tim Duncan let his team down offensively with only 4 points, but crashed the boards with 12 rebounds and played some exellent defence (2 steals, 5 blocks). The Spurs also got a huge lift from their bench. 16 points and 4 assists came from Brent Barry, while Glen Robinson also put up 12 points and 3 rebounds.

"This was a pretty big win for us," said Spurs head coach Greg Popovich. "This game shows us that we can beat a pretty good team without Tim Duncan giving us any major productivity. He was held to only 4 points, but basketball is a team sport and he managed to get the ball to his teamates. Duncan found other areas where he could contribute, and that's what all of the great players do if they cannot find a way to score."

Denver gradually lost momentum as the game went on and was given very few opportunities in the paint. The duo of Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin each had 20 points, but both players failed to shoot above 43%. Marcus Camby was a non-factor on offence, but managed to contribute a game-high 14 rebounds and 2 blocks. Andre Miller showed some versatility by nearly getting a triple double; 10 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.

The Nuggets were a mess defensively, as they allowed Tony Parker to score 12 points in the first quarter. This resulted in Andre Miller being benched for most of the first half for his poor defence. Glen Robinson and Brent Barry looked like superstars in the second quarter when they shot a combined 10-13 from the field. Barry had 12 points and Robinson had 10 in the second quarter alone.

The Nuggets tried to speed up the pace of the game in an attempt to throw San Antonio's game off, but they only allowed the Spurs to widen the gap even further with plenty of alley-oops and fast break layups from Ginobili and Parker. What was thought to be an advantage turned out to be their downfall as Denver went from 50% shooting in the first half, to 37% shooting in the second.

"We were a mess defensively," said Marcus Camby. "We need to tighten up our defence if we are going to beat the better teams in the league like San Antonio. Sometimes we got lost in a lot of pick and rolls and sometimes we just got lazy. I was very disapointed with the way we made ourselves look in our first game.

Thanks for the early support.

Well I wanted to make it more realistic considering the fact that Lenard is currently a fat-ass. So I'm going to bench him for the first few games until he can "effectively play starter minutes".

Denver Nuggets (0-1) vs. Indiana Pacers (1-2)

Starting Lineups

Image

Key Match-up
Kenyon Martin vs. Jermaine O'Neal:

After limiting Tim Duncan to only 4 points in their first loss of the season, Kenyon Martin has to step it up once again to defend another one of the top big men in the league. Jermaine has the ability to shoot the ball, post up or explode to the basket for a dunk. Defensively, he isn't too bad either, and he should give Martin a few problems in the paint. O'Neal is probably a lot tougher to defend on offence than Tim Duncan because of his large array of moves and is absolutely deadly one-on-one.

Lucky Nuggets Saved by Carmelo and Camby (92-88 Nuggets*).

Nuggets Boxscore
Pacers Boxscore

The Denver Nuggets claimed their first win of the season thanks to the stellar play of Carmelo Anthony and a pair of free-throws by Marcus Camby. Anthony finished with a team high 24 points and also collected 7 rebounds, while Camby finished with 10 points and 7 boards as well. Kenyon Martin also finished with a solid 12 points and wiped the glass clean with a game-high 12 rebounds. With the starting shooting guard spot currently up for grabs, the biggest suprise of the night went to Dermarr Johnson, who might have gotten closer to winning the coaches over with a stellar 17 point 5 rebound performance to help clinch the Nugget's first win of the season.

"I got some good looks," said Johnson. "I am a few inches taller and a lot more athletic than Reggie (Miller), so I tried to use that to my advantage. I have to give credit to my teamates though, they really helped me get a lot of good opportunities to score."

Indiana's bad start just got worse as they now fall to 1-3 overall in the standings. Stephen Jackson had a game-high 30 points, but did not contribute much of anything else. Superstar foward Jermaine O'Neal looked out of rythm on offence as he only scored 12 points; but had 9 rebounds and an incredible 5 blocks. Reggie Miller lived up to his clutch persona and had a with a 14 point performance, where 8 of those 14 points came in the fourth quarter. Jamal Tinsley also had a woeful night in terms of scoring, but he managed to accumulate a game-high 14 assists.

"Carmelo hurt us real bad," said Jermaine O'Neal. "Dermarr also gave us quite a surprise too. Their first game was an ugly one, so we downplayed their game and they jumped out at us."

Denver started off the game smartly by going to their strength, which is scoring in the paint. Stephen Jackson scored 11 of the Pacer's first 16 points and both teams shot well above 50%. The Nuggets managed to tighten up the defence and went on a 10-2 run to create a 36-26 double digit lead in the second quarter. Dermarr Johnson already had 13 points by halftime to lead the Nuggets.

A cold spell went over the Nuggets though, as they failed to connect on wide open jumpers and shot only 33% in the third quarter. Indiana would capitalize on this and cut the lead into 2 points. The fourth quarter was a see-saw affair; as soon as the Pacers tried to gain momentum, Carmelo Anthony would answer with a tough shot to answer back. Denver appeared to have the game in the bag when they led 88-74 after a 9-3 run with 3:04 left in the game, but Reggie Miller hit two free throws and a layup shortly before Jackson nailed very tough contested three pointers to tie the game up at 88-88. Reggie Miller nailed another running jumper in the paint and Denver was forced to call timeout. Carmelo Anthony rose to the occasion and buried a long fadaway jumper at the top of the key to tie the game up with 39 seconds left. Jamaal Tinsley shot his team in the foot with a quick pull up three pointer that barely grazed the rim. NeNe quickly went back the other end for a wide open layup, but Jermaine O'Neal appeared out of nowhere to swat the ball out of bounds. Marcus Camby recieved an inbounds pass and was quickly fouled and made both free throws.

"It was a very tough game," said George Karl. "Camby isn't the best free throw shooter on our team, but he was the only one that was open to recieve a pass. He wasn't tense at all and he buried the free throws with ease. I'm proud of the way he played out there."

I honestly think we are the only Dermarr Johnson fans on this forum. :)

The difference in our dynasties is that my dynasty sucks and your dynasty is good.

Yeah, Parker and Ginobili probably had more than 80% of their shots on the fast break. They killed me with their fast-break layups and dunks.

Denver Agrees To Part Ways With Pope

Just hours after winning their very first game of the season, the Denver Nuggets management staff have announced that they have released Mark Pope. Mark Pope has been on the injured list and had yet to see any action in any of Denver's two games. The 32 year old veteran was in the final year of making the league's minimum salary and was clearly not in any of the Denver Nuggets' future plans.

"We have decided to part ways with Mark, mainly because we want an extra roster space for any free agent signing that we might be interested in acquiring in the future," said Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe. "Obviously Mark Pope would not have been getting any playing time, since our core group of guys are currently intact. I would like to a piece or two, and I think this move gives us some flexibility in terms of where to go."

Mark Pope has career averages of 1.9 points per game and 1.7 rebounds per game. Pope started his NBA career when he was drafted 52nd overall by Indiana in the 1996 draft, but he did not play a single game until the 19971998 season. spent two years with the Pacers, totalling only 32 games, 41 points and 30 rebounds. He was later signed by the Milwaukee Bucks prior to the 2000-2001 season, and spent another two years with the Bucks, but he yet again, failed to make an impact. Mark Pope made his way to Denver during the 2003-2004 season, where he was signed as a free agent.

The Nuggets did not lose much of anything by releasing Mark Pope

Well, that was a shocker now wasn't it? I'm up for any suggestions of any free agents that are out there right now. I'm looking for a cheap point guard or a big man in the free agency pool, and right now the leading candidates (in no particular order) for those spots are:

Marcus Haislip
Jerome Moiso
Lonny Baxter
Dion Glover
Joseph Forte
Smush Parker
Shammond Williams
Felipe Lopez

I'm open to any suggestions.
