The term "Knickerbockers" traces its origin back to the Dutch settlers who came to the New World -- and especially to what is now New York -- in the 1600s. Specifically, it refers to the style of pants the settlers wore ... pants that rolled up just below the knee, which became known as "Knickerbockers," or "knickers".

KNICKS DYNASTY: KNICKS START TRAINING CAMP

Postby knickerbocker03 on Sun Aug 21, 2005 3:12 am

KNICKS START TRAINING CAMP

Isiah Thomas, Knicks´ President Of Basketball Operations has announced today that the team has started this year´s training camp. Thomas said when asked about the team´s roster that "Several changes are going to be made, in order to improve our team and our options for making the playoffs". It is known that some players are involved in trade rumors, specially Tim Thomas, who played below expectations the last season.
By now, that´s the Knicks´ roster:

KNICKS TALKING WITH CAVS

New York Knicks confirmed today that conversations have been started with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Thomas said that there are several worrying things in the roster: "We have several limitations with our actual roster. We only have one pure center (Jackie Butler) and he hasn´t reached yet the necessary experience for playing as the starting center. We also have more problems, as we haven´t got a true point guard in our bench cause Jamal (Crawford) is rather a 2 than a 1. All these problems are going to be studied by the Knicks management and by coach Larry Brown".
When asked about the conversations with the Cavs, Thomas answered that he´s actually focused in bringing a true center for the team, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas is the first option. New York is probably looking for a trade sending Tim Thomas to the Cavs, and completing the package with a power forward.
That also will increase playtime for Mike Sweetney, one of the top projects in Isiah´s plans.

PENNY DISHES OUT: "I´M NOT WORRIED ABOUT PLAYING THE POINT AGAIN"

Penny Hardaway, one of the most talented point guards of the 90´s, dished out that quote in an interview with a New York reporter. "Since I left Orlando six years ago, I´ve always been called by coaches to play as a 2 or a 3 (here in N.Y.). But I´ve never forget how to play as a PG. I´m still a 1, but I can do many other things, so it´s only a matter of what coach Brown wants of me. I´m not worried of playing the point again if he wants that".
Speculations of Penny playing as the natural substitute of Stephon this next season have increased recently, since Isiah Thomas is not really interested in acquiring more free agents. "We´re above the salary cap and we should look only for trades. Acquiring a new point guard is not our intention as long as Penny and Jamal can play some minutes in this position".

Thanks for the support Sac-1. I wanted to say that Penny is going to be the natural subsitute off the bench for Stephon. Sorry if not explained correctly hehe. Good luck in your dynasty!

BIG MAN TO THE BIG APPLE

The deal is done. The New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers completed a trade which would sent Zydrunas Ilgauskas to the Big Apple in exchange for Tim Thomas and Malik Rose. "We´re really happy to add a player and a person as Zydrunas to the Knicks´ family" - said Isiah Thomas.
"We hope that having a center as Zydrunas will definitely help us to make the playoffs".

That´s now the Knicks´ roster:

With the trade, Quentin Richardson is expected to play as the starting 3. This allows Jamal Crawford to play as the starting SG.

KNICKS STRUGGLE IN FOURTH, LOSE IN SEASON OPENER

The Knicks lose in their season opener at the Fleet Center in Boston. The first half of the game was really closed and the Celtics lead by one, 51-50. Marbury scored 17 of his 21 in the first quarter and Richardson had 13 on 5/5 FG. The third period was also closed and finished with the Celtics leading by 4, 74-70. But the Knicks offense struggled in the fourth and was held to 12 points on 5/17 shooting. New York also comitted 16 TO´s in the game and was outscored by Boston´s bench 26-11.
"We have a lot to work on, but we should not be worried. This is the first game of the season and we have an ugly fourth quarter, but we have played pretty well in the first three and that´s what matters to me at this point of the season" - coach Larry Brown said.

KNICKS SURVIVE IN DOUBLE OVERTIME THRILLER

The New York Knicks probably expected an easier one. New York escaped with a victory from the United Center in a game that the Bulls were winning by more than 20 points in the 3rd quarter. The Knicks started seriously and with good defense finished the 1st with a 6 point rent, 26-20. But the 2nd was nothing but catastrophic. The Bulls outscore the Knicks 39-14 and went into halftime with a 40-59 cushion. Kirk Hinrich scored 16 in the second. After halftime nothing seemed to change, as the bulls opened a 23-point cushion with 6:24 remaining in the 3rd, 73-50. But the Knicks started a furious run over the next 6 minutes and closed the quarter with a 21-5 spark, behind 13 points from Stephon Marbury. At the start of the 4th the score was 71-78 for the Bulls. Chicago helds rents of 6 to 10 points until the final 2 minutes, when a 3-pointer by Jamal Crawford and a 3-point play by Marbury, tied the game at 100, with 1:39 reamining. Antonio Davis scored a left-handed hook with 1:22 to play and Quentin Richardson tied it again 20 seconds later. Both teams missed their next possessions. With 31 seconds remaining Andres Nocioni was fouled and he converted only the first, giving the Bulls a 103-102 lead. Marbury played a quick pick-and-roll with Ilgauskas, but he missed the jumper and Chris Duhon rebounded the ball. He was fouled with 23 seconds to go. Duhon missed the first and converted the second, so it was 104-102. Larry Brown ordered a screen for Jamal Crawford. The play was well executed, but he missed the jumper with 8 seconds remaining. Ilgauskas grabbed the offensive rebound and was quickly double-teamed, so he called the Knicks´ last time-out. Marbury was expected to take the shot, but he was well defended and had to pass the ball to Maurice Taylor, who launches a quick hook shot as time expires that went in. Officials had to view a replay of the shot and it was clearly on time. End of regulation. Score tied to 104.
During the first overtime Marbury was fouled out with 2:34 to play. Allan Houston replaced him an Jamal Crawford moved to the PG spot. That was probably one of the best decisions in the game by coach Brown. Crawford, who scored just 13 points on 5/16 shooting in the opener at Boston, erupted for 16 points in the two overtimes. With 30 to play in the 1st OT Crawford drilled a key jumper that bring the Knicks a 116-114 lead. Hinrich contested with another jumper and Q-Rich misses the trey as time expires. In the 2nd OT the story wasn´t the same. Carried by Crawford´s offensive scoring, New York early opened an 8 point lead that they mantain until the end of the game. Nocioni hit a 3 at the buzzer. The final score was 134-130 for the Knicks. Awesome game!!!
