If you, Andrew, haven't seen playing Jose Manuel Calderon, I hope you haven't the impression that he is the typical soft and decent shooting player coming from Europe. He's one of the strongest guards I've ever seen in Europe, excelent in defense and very solid in offense, never gives strange passes and is a very solid 3-pt shooter. Don't forget what Larry Brown said about him when Spain-US in Athens: "Calderon is one of the best guards I've ever seen".

It would be a great chance to see Calderon, Fran Vazquez, Johan Petro and other players in EuroBasket next september. However, there are other players that won't assist (like Jasikevicius, recently signed by pacers).

We can't really predict what Petro will make next year... We can't know too if the Sonics will let him play... He never had big stats while he was in France, he's clearly a project... Right now I'd say he's better that Robert Swift, but I don't see him taking the starting spot at the beginning of the season... He can develop into a good interior, he looks like Moiso with more motivation (that's what killed Moiso), but right now, it would definitely be unrealistic to make him too good (though I don't know how low Andrew rated him)

I don't know who will start at center for the sonics, but surely Petro won't. Even he wasn't the starting center for his team in France. Fortson?? Or is he a FA?? Swift?? Too young... I don't know.

If the sonics keep vitaly potapenko, then he'll prolly start next season, or maybe danny fortson, but i'd bet they start a real center and not a pf, so either swift or potapenko will start, petro wont, and hes not better than swift, hes had a hard time adapting to american rules, and swift has had some good games in the summer leagues, unlike petro. Petro will take some time before he develops.

It's clear that European player are sub-rated (Ronny Turiaf is too) but even if I'm French, I can tell you that Johan Petro is not Sub rated, he's a very lazy player, he's worst that Jerome Moiso, scouts see in him a very great potential only because he's young, very tall and because he's already in national team besides he plays basketball only since few years.
But he's in the national tean only because France doesn't have big (tall) players...

Petro won't be a starter ...

got me hunting out my old slam copies

No link, exact words outta the mag:

When Johan Petro broke his left wrist two years ago in a scooter accident, the french basketball community went into a frenzy. What exactly was the 7-footer, a player seen as the future of french basketball doing on a scooter?........................The truh is Petro, just 17 at the time was too young to drive, so the scooter was the only way for him to go to practice.
