Williams, Hawks Struggle and Lose
DET-106 ATL-92

Image
Rip Hamilton dominated the Hawks for 32 points

ATLANTA (AP) Something had to work. Atlanta's been working hard, showing improvement, coming a little bit closer to that ,uch needed title of over .500. The idea of wearing throwback jerseys though, well, that doesn't solve problems.

Marvin Williams with the jerseys that were older than he was scored a pathetic 9 points.

Sporting the green and blue uniforms didn't help Tony Delk and Tyronn Lue, as they combined for a measly 14 points. Lue wasn't as bad, however, going 4-7. "Yeah, my teammates maybe didn't do the best job of getting me the ball...but that tends to happen on a losing team, everyone wants to be a hero."

New ATLien Jamaal Magliore lead all Hawks with 14 points, 3 blocks and 5 boards. Josh Childress took way too many field goals for his standards, shooting 4-18. He came through with 7 rebounds.

That's right, 7 rebounds lead the Hawks tonight.

If we can draw a constant problem this year for the Hawks, it just might be the inability to rebound. Josh, Marvin, and Jamaal, have been trying to do it all...but that's hard in the NBA. That'll be especially hard when the Hawks face the Miami Heat, and Shaq on Friday.

On the other side of the ball, SF Tayshaun Prince had a big game with 33 points leading all scorers. How about Rip Hamilton?! 32 points for the ever-moving guard out of UConn. Not too shabby. Same credit goes out to Ben Wallace, who came to play, scoring 16 points, 18 rebounds (8 offensive) and 4 blocks. Sick, twisted and nasty.

Detroit's bench came up with 28 points alone, a huge number when reflected upon.

For the Hawks, it's been the Point Guard who has really killed them all year. Tonight, that wasn't the case, as Tyronn did a great job on Chauncey Billups, keeping him at 10.

David West made the most of his time, coming up with 8 rebounds, and scored 5 points.

Mike Woodsen, played all his players on this night, and had this to say : "Well, I think we stunk. We came out flatter than we have all year despite losing by 13 and had no heart. I would appreciate if all the little boys without heart would leave right now. The real men want to play basketball."

One positive that can be drawn for the Hawks was 7-13 from beyond the arc, which is needless to say, a refreshing change. Now, take that positive away, and counter it with 59% field goal shooting for the Warriors. That's obscene. It really, really is.

Nothing needs to be said on that note...

On the whole, this effort was a big decline from the one we saw in Charolette. The Hawks really never contested in this one, and they have to look for a way to win on Friday, against Shaq Daddy and the suprisingly bad 2-6 Miami Heat.

Heat burn Hawks in Atlanta
MIA-116 ATL-84

Wade Dunked his way to a double-double with
20 points and 12 assists

ATLANTA (AP) In a league where the league leaders, the Denver Nuggets, hit the 7-win plateau, the lowly Hawks hit a 7 mark of their own on the same night.

But the Hawks have seven losses, not seven wins.

"This is getting more and more frustrating. The team just can't come out and perform to their expceted level, and can't win basketball games," said coach Mike Woodsen right after the game. He cannot, however be frustrated with the whole lot.

Marvin Williams had a great game with a solid 22 pionts, while Jamaal Magliore closed in on a double-double with 8 points and 17 rebounds. Josh Childress was in the groove as well with a fantastic 19 steals and 6 assists, compared to 2 turnovers. Even Kevin Willis was getting into it, notching 10 points, hitting 5 field goals for the first time in years. But like games in the past, it wasn't a team that broke Atlanta down...it was a two-man show, as the guards, Damon Jones and Dwyane Wade stole the show.

The pair hit 25 field goals combined to nicely complement their 59 points. Only one other player hit double figures for the Heat that Shaq guy dropped 21pts and 10 rebounds. I must personally say that I was suprised at Wayne Simean for the Heat, the rookie out of Kansas, starting for a Heat club whose PF Udonis Haslem is injured with a broken finger. Simean picked up 8 points, 9 boards and 2 blocks. He was a presence as well on the offensive glass with 5 boards there.

The Hawks were clearly outbattled in all aspects tonight, as they were blown out in rebounds, and could only manage to make 1-18, 3-pointers.

Now, an honorable (very honorable) mention must go to Tyronn Lue, one day after a terrible shooting performance, goes 7-8 from the line, and 4-8 in general for a nice 19 points along with 3 boards amd 7 assists. If Atlanta wants to actually win games, they have to listen to this man, because he knows how to play.

The Hawks go to The Windy City to face the resurging Chicago Bulls.

CHICAGO(AP) Down 16 at halftime, Hawks make stunning comeback, wow bet you never thought you'ld read that did ya?

Chicago coach Skiles "speechless" after Atlanta's second half surge

These were the words of Chicago Bulls head coach Scott Skiles after an amazing 88-86 comeback victory by the Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawkss trailed 55-49 at halftime. Mike Woodsen must have given one great speech in the locker room.

"He told us to stop looking like retarded guys in wheelchairs waving to relatives," said Marvin Williams

Regardless, the Hawks did win behind 16 points and 4 boards from Williams, who quietly this year has said the ball should be in his hands at the end of the game, and tonight it was with him hitting a buzzer-beating 17 footer. Atlanta got 18 points from Jamaal Magliore, 12 from Josh Childress, and 8 from Josh Smith. Salim Stoudamire was a spark off the bench, taking over for the struggling Tyronn Lue.

Atlanta outscored Chicago 39-21 in the second half.

Im gonna play him at shooting guard. I wanted a quick good dribbling guy who can score and Childress was to slow to get to the basket and Hayes is fast and can shoot and dunk. And Marv plays way too much i play him most of the 1st 2nd and 3rd quarters and he cant do much at the end of the 4th so i figure Jarvis can be my T-Mac.

Hawks Knock the Knicks

Image
Kevin Willis recorded his first double-double in 5 years
tonight 10 points and 12 rebounds

NEW YORK (AP) Larry Brown and his dreamy New York Knicks thought the Hawks would make this a game for a little while, but did they honestly expect what they got?

"Not one bit," a dazed Brown said. "They were 50 times better than what we were expecting."

The Knicks, hopelessly outscored, outrebounded, and outclassed, found themselves at the mercy of the Hawks in a 99-80 blowout.

Marvin Williams was simply unstoppable, scoring 23 points including going a perfect 2-2 from 3-point range, and grabbing 7 rebounds. Ben Wallace scored 14 and pulled down 12 boards. The rout was on for sure.

"Man, did they suck," said a surprised Tyronn Lue. "We were sort of expecting a fight, but they rolled over and died like my dad tried to do when my mom used to cook dinner." After an awkward pause, Tyronn added, "Boy, did I come off sounding stupid there."

"He's right," said Knicks forward Jerome Williams, who tied for the team lead with 11 rebounds. "We flat-out stunk. And when The Junk Yard Dog says it, it's true, get it?"

Stephon Marbury was a beat for New York as he scored 22 points and dished out 7 assists. However, he also turned the ball over an astronomical 9 times.

"I might have to sleep with the ball tonight to learn to hang on to it," said Marbury. "I wonder if that really works."

Tyronn Lue scored 13 for Atlanta, while new-comer Jarvis Hayes put in 12, but it took him 18 shots to get to 12.

"Getting traded, you need to get used to your teamates but to have to do that and do it in Madison Square Garden, its tough." said Hayes

Some key stats: New York blocked a grand total of 3 shots all game, while Atlanta sent back 10. The Hawks had a significant edge on the bench, as Detroit's second line outscored New York, 18-13. The Hawks also shared the ball more effectively, with 23 assists to the Knicks' 17.

The one real bright spot for fans was Knicks rookie Nate Robinson. Robinson a mere 5'8" astonished the crowd with 2 monster dunks on Jamaal Magliore and Robinson hit two three pointers.

Williams, Wins It....AGAIN
IND-76 ATL-78

Ron Artest let up on defense once tonight
and it cost his team a win.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) With ith 9.5 seconds in the game, and Atlanta in the lead, the Hawks felt like the game was theirs. They had dominated all game long and had the best team in the league in the palm of their hand, with four players scoring over 15 points each. The Pacers weren't ready to be beat though.

In the last 11 seconds, Pacers forward Ron Artest took the ball and drove past the Hawks defense thus scoring two points with a dunk. This put the ATLiens in a situation where they had to call a timeout and now they were worried. The Hawks decided not to give the ball to their most experienced sharpshooter.

Hawks forward Marvin Williamd got the ball with 3.6 seconds left and drove the ball down the lane. Going hard to the hoop Marvin who only had 3 points he whole game made the shot and was fouled. The ball went through the air and swish, nothin' but net. Atlanta would win the game in front of a rare capacity crowd.

"I knew I could take that shot. I knew JO (Jermaine Oneal) fouled out and I knew Jeff Foster doesn't really block shots. I just had to go hard and get away from Ron, " said Williams after the game"He played me too close and i just drove hard."

The Pacers had a miserable game tonight because of poor shooting. Alhough one Pacer put up some big numbers, they had a very poor shooting percentage. Even Jermaine Oneal, one of the NBA's best players, was cold, scoring only 16 points on 8 of 21 shooting.

Tyronn Lue Burns down the
Phillips Arena with 50

CHI-130 ATL-136

Image
Tyronn Lue played the best individuale game by
any NBA player this year He had a triple double
and he scored a career-high 52 points.

ATLANTA (AP) Just two days ago, everything went right for Atlanta. Two days later, everything was beyond anything Hawks fans, or NBA fans would expect. The Chicago Bulls came into the Phillps Arena with the intention of beating Atlanta at home where they are 3-1. While Kirk Hinrich put on a clinic, Tyronn Lue, yes i said Tyronn Lue performed like Hinrich himself only much better. Both players would help carry their team not only to one overtime, but to three!

In the 4th quarter, the Hawks missed many shots and were nearly down by 11 points. They would rally up and make a comeback in the last three minutes of the game. Kirk Hinrich was attacking the rim easily all game long but he was doing everything by himself, soring 14 points in the 4th quarter. Atlanta relied on its young big 3 for help and they responded.

Tyronn Lue finished the quarter with 23 points,Marvin Williams had 10 points, while Jamaal Magliore had 13 points and 13 rebounds. The teams would go at it until Tyronn hit the critical shot that would send the game into OT.

In the first OT, Hawks guard Jarvis Hayes fouled out early and finshed the game with 14 points and getting 4 steals. Things got worse for Atlanta near the end when forward Josh Smith got injured but scored on a crucial AND 1 that would tie the game with less than a minute left! Smith would return.

In the 2nd OT, Tyronn Lue played like Michael Jordan, hitting many shots while attacking the rim, rebounding and creating shots for team-mates, you know everything. In the last 11 seconds of the game, Tyronn Lue hit a 3 point shot that would put Atlanta up by one. On the next possesion, Chicago guard Ben Gordon would hit a shot that put the Bulls up one. On the next play, Tyronn Lue took control. He drove through the lane and drew a foul on Eddy Curry. Tyronn would hit only one free throw and the game would be sent into another OT.

In the final overtime, Tyronn Lue played with much energy and helped his team established an early lead. Center Jamaal Magliore scored critical points down in the post but did not have a strong defensive game, He scored 23 points and grabbed 13 boards. The Bulls looked extremely fatigued and were missing a mouthful of shots. The Bulls and more notabally Kirk Hinrich would try to lead one last hurrah, but a three pointer by Tyronn Lue with 30 secounds left sealed it. Atlanta wins the game 136 to 130.

Atlanta had 5 PLAYERS IN DOUBLE FIGURES tonight with Tyronn Lue leading the way with a new career high of 52 points while shooting 7/16 from beyond the arc. He also had 10 assists and 14 rebounds.

"They are a good team. They can utilize their bench in much needed situations and most of the players on our team were the starters. Our bench had an off night but we hung in there," said a sweaty Kirk Hinrich after the game. Hinrich put up 46 points and had 8 assist and 9 rebounds as well.

Another Hawk that had a big game was Salim Stoudamire, posting 18 points and grabign 4 rebounds. The Hawks Big 3, combined all together, scored 96 points out of the teams 138.
