Maybe Watson shoud have been a wide receiver...

A Kiwi in Europe… This 6’ 10” , 250 lbs specimen of a man, was born in New Zealand and started playing basketball in Auckland, always dreaming that one day he’ll be in the NBA playing in Oakland… A Golden State warriors fan and an avid Latrell Sprewell supporter, Andrew was wearing his GS jersey wherever he went (even on dates…) and had no qualms about grabbing everyone who pissed him off by the the throat, Spree-style.

By the time he was 17, Watson was considered to be the best talent in New Zealand, and had already debuted for the All-Black national tea… Offers from many US colleges came in abundance, including Kansas, Oklahoma State and Indiana, but our young prodigy decided to sign a letter of acceptance for Nebraska… Kind of shows you that we’re talking about a strange bird here…

One would expect that within the cold and quiet life in Nebraska, there would not be many distractions for Andrew to focus completely on basketball and work his way towards his NBA dream… But it was far from that… he quickly became bored with the slow-moving rural life and , having brought along some money from his home, decided to test his entrapenourial ( Andrew Bynum reference.)skills by opening a gambling/drinking establishment in the heart of the state. Booze, women, gambling and peculiar elements all became the newest sensation in Nebraska, and the only 19 year-old Kiwi was now known as “ The Outsider”, scorned by locals and loved by tourists.

Meanwhile, not having dedicated himself to practicing his game, his skills quickly deteriorated, all the while his weight started rising. Soon enough, he was slower than Oliver Miller and relied mostly on his jumper to score. It wasn’t long enough before his 300 pounds of weight took their toll on his knees, and he was redshirtedfor an entire season. With his businesses also beginning to lose money, our kiwi friend decided to quit his American dream for now and go back to his home country to polish up his game and reduce his vices.

After 1 year in New Zealand, Andrew signed a 2 year deal with the Perth Wildcats of Australia, where his newly found dedication resulted in him being named MVP of the league in his second year, thus regaining his position in the New Zealand national team, backing up local legend Pero Cameron. Having lost weight, now at 250lbs gain, Watson received an offer in the summer of ’04 to come show his skills in Europe, and play for once Giants-now minnows Olympiakos of Greece…

Will it be the beginning of a new career for the 24 year old, or will the wild life of Greece by night lure him into his old vices…? Only time will tell…
