Earthquake!

Postby Drex on Wed Jun 15, 2005 2:57 am

WOW. Yesterday, I was at my school gym playing basketball. It was the first time in a couple weeks that I went to practice ("Y'all talking about practice...")I got there and changed my clothes to play. My team won, and as we went back on D, a freaking sound scared the shit out of me...the roof started sounind, and the earth, too. I dind't realized that the Earth was moving...'till I saw all the guys running to the street, so I followed them :P . As I did this, the lights went out (it was like 6:45 PM) Outside, everybody was screaming and shit. I saw some cars moving a lot, like it was a movie or something...After, it ended, I went to my girlfriend's house to check if she was OK. Then I run a little to my house, and saw my mom and dad in the street, waiting for me.
The fucking quake was 7.9 grades. 12 people are dead. Fortunately, I'm OK and all the people I know are OK, too. The city is without water, and from time to time we get some earth movement, but you can barely feel it :)

Woah, quite an exciting event. Well, not for the dead and injured, but that's gotta get your heart rate up a bit. Well, glad all's well with you & hopefully the city will have water soon enough.

How come they didn't see this coming?

Wow, that's pretty weird. Just wondering, is Chile a place known for earthquakes? Or was it completely random?

We're well known for earhquakes. We got the most powerful ever. 9,5 In valdivia, 1960 :P Since my grandmother was born, that we're suppose to be hit by a huge quake. Also, since were in the coast, the tsunami alert got everybody running to high grounds.

How come they didn't see this coming?

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not :P

Let me add more numbers: at least 200 people injured just in Iquique, many houses, schools, and hospitals in the towns near the Desert are down.

No, I'm not being sarcastic. I didn't mean it literally either, I mean don't they have devices and whatnot to know if there's an earthquake coming? I could be wrong though.

No, there are not devices for that type of things. You never know when an Earthquake is coming. That's why you always have to be ready for this type of things. And, of course, we weren't

With those kind of things they usually say it's going to happen within a period of time like 10 years or even 30 or more.

They're not that accurate. For the last 30 years there has been a big earthquake that's about to happen here. There is NO way to predict it yet. The plates could release at any time. I just spent a month on geology in Science too.

So long as I'm not in Delta I would be fine with an earthquake. I'm just on the solid piece of rock that is the north shore. Everyone in Delta is just going to sink.

Glad to hear you're OK Drex. We've had a couple of quakes in Newcastle in the last 20 years, a 5.5 one in 1989 and then another in 1994 that was basically a mild tremor.

I don't mind you guys from Chile, I'd definitely replace our Filipino population with more people like Drex/Jona.
