Karma/Points system & Custom Titles

Postby Ruff Ryder on Sun Jun 12, 2005 11:26 am

Before you all get your pannies in a rut about "dotorg this, dotorg that", it doesn't have to be the same. Anyway, I think it would be kinda cool to have a points or karma or both system(s) that allows users to give eachother karma and points for good posts, etc.

For instance, it works well at MixMakers.net, where karma is rewarded for posting Mixes/graphics/clips, etc. Anyway, we could give karma/points to guys that are patching or making good positive posts or even running cool dynasties. It sucks when nobody comments on your patches or dynasties. Andres Granados for instance got pissed off a couple times when nobody would post in his patching thread. Now if he was to give points or karma to someone who does post in his thread, he'd get more replies. We could subtract karma/points from people that spam the forum or keep posting repetitive topics.

It can also be used for forum games, like Jae's reality show (that's not going anymore), where he could donate so many points to the winner. It would encourage posting a bit more, but the drawbacks are alot of stupid topics, and alot of "which player does/is the best..." type posts.

It doesn't have to be the same as .orgs. There's is just a small meter under the avatar like 5/-5, it could be hidden or used in reputation like at mixmakers.

Opinions?

It's a good idea. I don't think it would hurt the forum at all, the best it could do is help and maybe more posters would start posting in a smarter way than just spamming all the time. I like the idea (Y)

Maybe if someone gets enough negative karma they get banned for a week. I would like that.

Personally, I don't think it'd work nor does it contribute in any way. The examples you gave do paint a pretty picture, no doubt. I just don't think it'd work with the set of posters we have here. I mean, there are people that log on to a website & as soon as they do that they look up their least favorite person just to give him a negative point. I mean, come on, aren't we passed kindergarten now? It would encourage people to post a bit more decently ( or so we'd hope ) but it could also alienate people from posting something then re-thinking it and saying, hmm, that comes off as negative and they'd probably give me a negative karma point for saying that and that.

It could also discourage patchers who've just begun and have had a couple of bad patches to start off with. Getting negative karma could either demotivate them or actually end up motivating them but I'm more likely to place my bets on the former given the people that give "constructive" critisism for patches can be harsh from time to time.

Anyways, it can go either way with the karma points system, it's either a hit or a flop, as I've seen from dotorg, it's pretty much a flop, it's just there & you don't really get an idea of anything. That's not a diss on dotorg so don't make it out to seem as if I'm knocking their idea, it's a good idea I just don't think it worked out all too well.

As I said, it's either a hit or a miss. I'm willing to give it a shot for a period of time, if it works nice, if it doesn't, scrap the idea.

Again, this is just what I think, if you folks are into it, that's also fine by me. :)

I must admit, I'm really not keen about the idea at all. I don't care for any system that ranks/rates posters as I believe a person's posts should speak for themselves.

Same what Jackal said and it could also be abused.
Its disadvantages also outweigh its advantages. Not worth it, IMO.

Jackal pretty much summed it up... it essentially becomes a way for cowards who are too chicken shit to say anything to you to just try and bag you that way... not that it's happened to me, repeatedly  ... but I don't really like it regardless, I think custom titles would be a good addition if they were worked like a reward basis... i.e certain posters were 'awarded' the ability to have custom titles based on things they've done, whether it's good patches/feedback/posts/threads etc.

First of all, I'd like to say I don't care for the Karma system at all, and Jackal summed it up nicely.
I also agree with Jae; having custom titles for some people would be a nice way to go. I've been for the idea in the past, and I'm still for it. I just wish that it wouldn't get overboard and given away to whomever made one nice post in general talk (fucking spammers ). You'd actually have to make a contribution in order to get one...

I'm guessing the Karma/Point system is out & the custom title thing is being discussed? If so, I won't be too offtopic from the new topic.

I think the custom title thing would be cool, how you'll implement it is another story but in general I'm for it too.

Edit:

it essentially becomes a way for cowards who are too chicken shit to say anything to you to just try and bag you that way

Hehe, they'd rather pose for pretty pictures with make up on & show us their exams.

Good idea! So I can reward people with positive karma when their Creative Caption is voted in my dynasty.

:o

Anyway, visit my dynasty and post your Creative Caption for the picture.

Karma points is gay for reasons already said.

Custom titles are cool though some formula should be implemented on when and how one can receive a title.
