Winspan

Postby Fenix on Wed Jun 01, 2005 4:46 am

I've been looking at the measurements of some NBA players. Those are some of the most freakish stats ever.

Michel Morandais is just 6'3.75" but with a whopping 6'11" wingspan.

Arthur Johnson measured just 6'7" without shoes making him 6'8". But his wingspan is an incredible 7'3" giving him a better standing reach than some 6'10 players at 9'1".

Josh Smith is listed at 6'9'', but his real height is 'just' 6'7''. But a seven foot wingspan to go with.

Another freak is certainly Dwight Howard: exactly 6'9'' but 7'5'' wingspan! His vertical reach is almost 9'4''.

So, the question is: what is the average difference between the height and the wingspan of a regular Joe? An inch? Two? Perhaps three?

(Oh, BTW: my measurements are very Beno Udrih -like: 6'2 1/2'', 6'5'' wingspan, 8'0'' vertical reach.)

there is something at the Basketball Hall Of Fame, where they have a whole thing with peoples wingspan on it, they have the smallest wingspan ever and the biggest, and other notable players like Jordan, and Petrovic and stuff.
When I went there mine was so small

What I don't get is the vertical wingspan..Isn't that when you like jump up to dunk verticall with your hands straight out? Because I'm pretty sure Josh Smith can touch the rim with two hands vertically so shouldn't his wingspan be 10" or something? I have real long arms and I'm 5'9 or 5'10 and when I measured myself with the measuring tape, I raised it to my hand and I had like a 7'4 wingspan, I don't know if that's correct or not but I raised at the right spot

Well I measured wrong...I have a 6' wingspan because my brother measured it for me. I measured it the way it should be measured that time with the way Jordan looked in that pic ceekay posted. So yes I still have long arms but not as long as Dwight's :P

Mafia-

Height: 5'9"
Wingspan: 6'

So I guess that answer your question after looking at Mazz's wingspan. The average joe wingspan is probably close to their height and mabe no more than 5 inches unless your a giant or something.

I'm guessing the average joe would look like a monkey if his hands were hanging all over the place so I think it'd be a safe guess that the average joe's wingspan won't be all that much more than his height.

6'5, 6'9 wingspan. I could've sworn Dwight Howard was closer to 7ft as opposed to 6'9.

Well, these are the official measurements from the Chicago pre-draft camp (June 2004):
6'9'' w/o shoes, 6'10,25'' with shoes, 7'4,5'' wingspan, 9'3,5'' standing reach.

He is listed at 6'11'', but that doesn't mean a thing. For instance, Ben Gordon is exactly 6'1'', but he's still listed at 6'3''. Same with Dajuan Wagner. But there are also examples when a players is taller than his listed heigth. That happened with Rik Smits and with some HS players who haven't changed their listed heights, although they still grew (KG said on a few occasions that he's "six foot, thirteen inches"-> 7'1''. He's listed at 6'11''.).

Standing reach stands for the measurement when you lift one of your hands in the air while having both of your feet on the ground. Like trying to block a shot while not jumping or standing on your tip-toes.

(Is it something wrong with my English? I know I'm still somewhat rusty... My apologies.)
