I gotta do this survey shite for Sociology class....so can ya'll answer this questions, i know they sound crapy....but i really gotta get 50 people to answer this bloody thing...

Violence in cartoons

Data:
30 minutes of Ran and stimpey show 34 acts of violwence, including 12 acts of animal cruelty.

30 minutes of Dexter's Lab show 26 acts of violence, including 10 explosions and 6 "grabs"

Questions

1) Does animal cruelty in cartoons such as RAn & Stimpey make children more violent?

yes/no

2) do you think that cartoons show more animalistic violence so that human violence could be avoided?

yes/no

3) Do you think that cartoons that target smaller children such as Dexter's Lab contain less or more violence then cartoons that target older children? why?

4) Do you think that cartoons that are not considered "Violent" by nature such as RAn and Stimpey and Dexter's Lab still show an exadurated amount of violence?

yes/no

5) Do you think that cartoons use punches and kicks more often then shooting since they are a more common form of violence between children?

yes/no

6) Would ypu let your child, if you had one, watch cartoons with 20 or more acts of violence?

Why/why not?

4 of the questions are a simple yes/no, the other two just require a sentence...i'll truly apriciate your help...

Thanks in advance

I hope this helps...

1. No

2. No

3. No. I believe it's a different type of "violence" in shows for a younger audience. Older kids are prone to watching more mature shows, such as DBZ, Transformers, which are a type of "harder" violence as they deal with the idea of death. Younger viewers watching Bugs Bunny and the like don't necessarily deal with death heavily. It's not the amount of violence that's different. It's the type and subject matter.

4. No

5. No

6. Again, it depends on the subject matter. If it's Bugs Bunny, where the Wile E. Coyote gets an anvil dropped on his head 20+ times, I couldn't care less, but if it were something like DBZ, probably not.
The task of the artist is to translate for us the essence of things we take for granted.

1.NO
2.NO
3. Less, because if they contained as much as shows aimed at older kids their parents wouldn't let them watch them.
4.NO
5.NO
6. No if they were under the age of 10, if they were older then yes. The reason is that I would rather make sure my child clearly understands the difference between Tv and reality before watching violent shows on TV.

3) Shows that target younger children do show less violence... I'm thinking Little Mermaide, Smurfs, Rugrats... :D

4) Yes

5) No

6) Yes, so long as the kids understand (and I would make sure they do) that violence or whatever is inappropriate. Unless ofcourse somebody hates on MJ, then they deserve to be smacked around...

1. No
2. No
3. Less, but these days a little more than they used to, mainly because most cartoons (specifically, animated movies) have underlying themes to make the movie attractive/bearable to adults (parents).
4. No
5. No
6. Yes - depending on the type of violence. Cartoonish violence has been around for a long time, and murderers/violent criminals do not account for a majority of the population. Should the child try to imitate the violence, I would see it as my role as a parent to discipline/explain to my child the difference between cartoons and reality. If a cartoon featured graphic/adult violence, then I doubt I would allow my child to watch.

1) no

2)no

3) less
4) yes

5) yes

6) yes, cartoon violence, is different from real violence. Cartoon violence is usually so outragous, that a child wouldn't think it would be possible to do.

1. No
2. No
3. Less, but more then would have been shown 5 years ago. They do have a certain amount so like Andrew said, they can be bearable to the parents or siblings that have to watch them.
4. No
5. No
6. Yes, you can't hope to keep these things from them because there everywhere. Violence is a part of life if you like it or not. They have to see the results of violence and also learn that the cartoon in no way reflects reality. Depending on the age of the child I would make a decision what sort of cartoon violence would be allowable. Like Eugene said if it just Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote it isn't going to harm anyone, but if it is DBZ the child must be at an age to understand it is all fake.
