Sun May 08, 2005 1:37 pm

Sun May 08, 2005 1:53 pm

Yes, this trade will rpobably work if u have positive cap space! To check ur cap space look in managers statement!

Sun May 08, 2005 2:07 pm

It says my cap room is -28.59M

Sun May 08, 2005 2:12 pm

wow, i don't think u'll make any trades, cuz ur cap room is way tooooo neative!Don't sign some1 with a big contract in the offseason, and sign ur good players to 2 min - 4max year contracts! Then u might have a positive cap!

Sun May 08, 2005 2:22 pm

I dont get it

In the NBA and most professional sporting leagues, there is a salary cap. This is basically a limit to prevent teams from signing any player to whatever amount of money they wish.

Some leagues have a "hard cap", ie teams cannot exceed the maximum total of player salaries. The NBA has a "soft cap", meaning you can go over the limit but there are various restrictions, the most prominent ones being total player salaries must match up when making trades, and there are restrictions on how much money a team can offer a free agent.

At the moment it's still very much simplified in the NBA Live series. When you have negative cap space (ie you are over the salary cap), you can only sign players for a maximum of $1.1 million. When you trade players, the salaries must match up (though a little bit of leeway is given).

When trading above the cap, the total amount of salaries being traded on one team must not be 120% of the other team's salary, with a $100,000 buffer to make things a little easier.

U get it now?

Sun May 08, 2005 4:39 pm

Ah k I get it now..So how do i make my salary cap to positive figures?

Sun May 08, 2005 4:41 pm

Also whats the difference between Cap Room and Salary Cap

Sun May 08, 2005 7:36 pm

The salary cap is the limit. Cap room (or cap space) refers to how far below the limit you are. If you are above the salary cap, you would have no cap room.

To gain more cap room (ie get below the salary cap), you need to reduce your payroll. It's difficult to do this during a season, but can be achieved if you trade your players for players with lower salaries; this requires you to trade with teams that do have cap space (check Manager Statement to see who that is in your Dynasty - in the first season, Charlotte will have plenty of cap room).

You may find it easier to trade for players who have contracts that will expire at the end of the year. In the upcoming offseason, they will be free agents and their salaries will come off your books. Note that you might have to make some trades that aren't really in your favour to achieve this, but that shouldn't matter if you're rebuilding.

Now im confused

Which part don't you understand?

Alright.

To get cap room, you need to reduce your total amount of salaries. You can do this by trading players with big salaries for players with small salaries. For those trades to go through, the team you're trading with needs to have cap space (ie they're below the salary cap) so they can accept the players with bigger salaries.

Alternatively, you can trade players with similar salaries but different contract lengths. For example: you trade a player with a contract for $5,000,000 with 3 years remaining for a player with a contract for $5,000,000 with 1 year remaining.

At the end of the season, his contract expires and if you don't re-sign him, that's $5,000,000 off your total salaries. You're over $28 million over the salary cap though, so you'll need to offload some really expensive players (preferably ones you don't want) to get back under the salary cap (ie get cap space).

Again, the salary cap is the limit, cap space (also known as cap room) is the difference between your total salaries and the salary cap. If your players' salaries add up to more than the salary cap, you don't have any cap space, thus in the Manager's Statement you will see a negative figure (like -$28 million).

So do I have to trade players with big salaris for smaller of for smaller for bigger

Sun May 08, 2005 8:18 pm

Big salaries for small salaries...but for those trades to work the other team must have cap space. In the first year of Dynasty Mode, the Bobcats have plenty of room, try to work out trades with them.

To use the second method I described (equal value, but longer contracts for 1 year contracts), you'll need to wait until the offseason to get the cap space.

No problem. :) If you're still having problems, post the trade (or trades) you're trying to make. I'm sure one of us will be able to suggest a possible solution.
